What could I do to my kitchen cabinets?

i absolutely hate the color they are painted. Sooner or later we are gonna tear them all out and redo them, but until then how can I make them look decent? i wanna paint them and put new handles on them. Any suggestions on color or how I can make them look better?

Oh btw the bottom drawer just fell out and I haven’t put it back in yet.

I'd get more excited about searching for a new French door fridge to replace the older model...get some off the rack bamboo blinds for the window..just enjoy the quirkiness of the cabinets as is, because they will no doubt be removed at some point it sounds. fill the old holes and get some better hardware, positioned appropriately for the time being. I'd leave the cabinets themselves alone. ...bland blonde cabinets which are useable: this is fine for an interim.....it could be so much worse. Start planning on graph paper for that something else you will do to the space in the future.

Are they actually painted now, or just light natural wood? If you want to paint them, you can do any color you love that coordinates with the rest of your home: I like these light uppers with a color below:

green:

I love blue kitchens, but you've gotta love blue!
And you probably can't go wrong with cream:

I might move your p.towel holder and put something decorative in that spot. A piece of art would look nice. Maybe new window treatments that block the sun but allow the light to come through to brighten it all up.

greenhaven, your blue former kitchen is really lovely! It's funny how warm it feels even though it's a cool colour. I would love to try induction at some point. It almost seems like magic. Just an FYI: I ended up buying a gas range on sale at Costco. I just think it's better for resale and it'll certainly be more functional. I'm now also leaning towards a more modern kitchen (with a few retro touches, maybe), as I think it will fit the house better. So a gas range works better looks-wise too. Later on, I'll post some more ideas about finishes and cabinet styles and all that. I think I'll need some help narrowing down the look. I find I like a lot of different things!

Whenever I encounter this situation, the most important think to keep in mind is that paint looks different in any area of your room depending on the light. So, the good news is, it doesn't have to be a 100% perfect match. Take the door in and first match the sheen, then bring some samples back into your kitchen so you can view it in the true light. Good luck picking the best one!

Do you need this cabinet? Because if you don't, it serves no decorative purpose. It is kinda the opposite of decorative, even if you paint it white and help it blend in with the walls. I would eliminate this built in.

I love the inspiration pictures Olychick posted, especially the first one. You can make a huge transformation with paint leaning in the country or cottage look if you have the time and patience, but make sure you do the right prep. This will mean proper cleaning/degreasing, sanding enough to remove the gloss, proper primer, and the correct paint.

Can you share a picture of the other side of the kitchen? Where is the stove? It appears you could use extra counter space; is it possible to mount a microwave over it? I know that is not popular here, but it sure is a great space saver!

What is in that bumpout where the paper towels are?

I wouldn't make any changes other than painting the cabs a pretty color (since it is a small space, I think I would go with something light) and that only if I just couldn't stand it. Instead, I would save up every penny I could pinch toward an Ikea kitchen.

I painted my old cabinets SW Fenland which is a soft tannish green. I have had many compliments on the color. Another plus, it hides imperfections better because its a midtone color. Halfway between light and dark. Then I just got some white ceramic knobs for like $1.00 a piece at Home Depot and a few handle type pulls with white ceramic on them. I have been happy with them for 6 years now. I don't want to invest in new cabinets at this time so I am glad I painted them. I also bought some 3M hooks and put them inside the cabinet doors for pot holders. They are handy where I have them and they don't show. I would put the paper towel holder under one of the cabinets. Those little things make a difference.

6 months of nights and weekends to do a job that will hold up. Or 7-9K. Time or money one has to be spent.

Sophie, I would never put that much time and effort into those cabinets. I would paint only to bring a nicer color in, as a very temporary measure.
