Design Dilemma Kitchens Lighting

Kitchen Island Remodel help (paint color and lighting)

I recently remodeled my island with a butcher block end and Cambria Berwyn top. The old solid surface counter will also be Berwyn soon. The input I am looking for is paint colors for the walls (I’m thinking a light grey since the cabinets and floors are dark) and I was thinking I need to remove the old light over the island since it is no longer centered due to the larger island and add 3 pendent lights over the island. Thoughts?

Great job on the new kitchen! I do agree with you that you need more centered pendant lights. Here's one that I thought would look good over your kitchen island

Since you have both gray and brown going on in your kitchen, I will let you know that we used Sherwin Williams Shitake color. It goes great with both the grays and browns we have going on in our home. Acts as a neutral. Definitely bring in samples though so you can see how it looks in your light!

Try Super White OC-152. It works well with Gray Owl which I would not hesitate to put on an island. Just test it to make sure you like it as much in this new space.

“That mix of grease and dust was the worst cleaning job I've ever had. I would never design a gap between cabinets and ceiling, unless I felt positive I would always have the money to pay a cleaning service.” @mcarroll16 - it sounds like there was no proper hood exhaust in your parents’ kitchen. I have 9’ ceilings, and on one wall the cabinets meet the ceiling, and on another wall I have 42” upper cabinets, 3” crown and a gap to the ceiling. I place wax paper up there (it’s the perfect width) to collect any dust or grease that might float up there, and twice a year, when I change smoke alarm batteries, I pick up the wax paper and put down new. Many times I just leave the wax paper there because it is so clean it does not need to be changed. I have a good hood exhaust. With a good hood exhaust, you would not have had such a cleaning chore in your parents’ home. It is quite expensive to take cabinets to meet a 9’ or 10” ceiling. Many people would rather invest in a good hood and correct ductwork for it. Indoor air quality is more important than ever these days.

DIY paint on this island..older cabinets? do more prep and I'd abandon the blue. Get a white with the correct undertones for your space [ best you can afford] semi gloss cabinet paint. You will be touching this up...[busy spot] as well blue will fade/ so touch ups and knicks and everything will give you headaches. first pic is a busy spot and the semi gloss or full gloss white paint will be easy to maintain. the blue and black options show much higher gloss levels than your paint swatch ....which will be essential. but touch ups due to the color will present issues/ and there will be touch ups.

Great job so far - that island is killer! I think Design Construction is right about considering a longer, rectangular fixture to center over your extended sink area. What I'd also recommend is adding a can on the same circuit to above and just in front of your cutting area (so it won't cast those over-shoulder shadows when slicing and dicing). Dimmable together, they would help highlight both areas where you really want to be able to amp up the lighting when needed for intricate tasks, and bump them back down since the area is also open to a dining zone and possibly other living space, too.
