Basically done - white and cherry shaker kitchen reveal
Comments (69)I have been absent from GW for quite some time, so I apologize for the delay in responding. Thanks to everyone for the kinds words about the kitchen. It's been nearly a year since it was finished and everything about it has been great. lynn2006 - the pullout with lid is by Rev-a-Shelf. The cabinet itself is custom as are all of the cabinets in the kitchen. Barbarav - I am loving all of my appliances. I particularly love the wall ovens, but really all the appliances are great and I'd do it all again the same way. TrueBlue234 - the cabinets are all new nsuep - the paint in the kitchen is Benjamin Moore November Skies. It's really a beautiful color. The tiles are from Heath, color is Frost I think, they are glossy, not frosted. They match perfectly with the paint and the color variation in the tiles is fantastic....See MoreBasic Builder's Kitchen-Ideas Welcomed!
Comments (15)I think you should make a plan for your kitchen, before you dig in. In how many years, realistically, might you change the countertops or do a full gut-remodel? If you honestly think either one of those could be in the next 5 years, that would change my answer. My gut feeling is, you just bought this house and you have a lot of things to furnish and complete. If so, then I'm guessing you're 7-10 years out before a full-scale kitchen remodel? And in that case, I'd gently suggest you do the following: 1. Assuming your cabinets don't have peeling veneer, or details we can't see, then I would leave them dark as mayflower advised. 2. Get cabinet hardware as andrea advised. 3. Tile the backsplash. You could add instant bling by buying the cute mini-tiles, already on webbing at Home Depot. Some have a bit of metallic or jewel tones. With labor you could be at a $1,000 for this item alone, but I really think it would perk things up. Also, aesthetically, your top cabinets seem to be floating in a sea of wall right now. The backsplash will connect the bottom cabs to the top ones. Also, please continue the backsplash down behind the current stove 6 inches.(see point 4). 4. Replacing appliances: Mayflowers is correct that this would also update your room. I would replace the stove. But, since you MIGHT want to open up that wall, you could be looking at a stove on an island someday. So leave your options open: Buy a slide-in range that could be used against a wall or on an island. A backsplash will be even more useful then, because your stove won't stick up above counter-height. See the sample photo of a slide-in range that I've attached. If you were to replace any other appliances, my second choice would be a white fridge. Fridges have gotten so much more efficient, you will actually save some money on their operation. Somehow the D/W is less bothersome to me. Also, most busy families wear out a dishwasher every several years so I'd milk it to the end before replacing. 5. I am not sure you need to repaint unless you have worn spots from the previous owners. You have a nice neutral color on your walls. See what you find for your other accessories before deciding. Comments (31)Thanks for sharing the edesign information. I think it's cool she gave you 2 options. I had a local designer help me with colors in my remodel. Overall it was immensely helpful, but I was surprised to get just 1 color recommendation per room. I guess many people just want the designer to tell them what to paint, while I was looking for help in narrowing down options. A design blogger I follow advises designers NOT to give options because it makes the client think the designer doesn't know which color is right... Also re: dark counter--I had mostly settled on black granite in my kitchen, but started second guessing it. I was sure the designer was going to recommend marble-look quartz. She picked up the black sample, said "This is interesting....I LOVE IT!" Now it's in my kitchen, and I love it too!...See Moreshown me your stark white cabinets with light counters.
Comments (20)I have found color temp to be such a personal choice. Go with the brighter white if that’s what’s you like. You will never achieve the look in your inspiration photos with the off white. I know it’s so hard when your designer, or your mom, or a friend has a different idea, but there used be an idea that off white reader “richer” and white white reads cheap and plastic. With the quality of today’s paints and finishes, that’s no longer the case. The pictures that you posted to show what you do not want use very strong chroma colors and black against the white. I would argue that the issue in those kitchens isn’t the cabinet color, but the other finishes that make the cabinet color look harsh. The countertops and wall color in the first picture, and the wall color, backsplash, and countertops in the second picture are what create that high contrast look. Good luck!!!!...See Morelucky998877
