dining chairs to pair with live edge table?

Hi!

we are replacing our dining table and chairs... i've had it forever and i can't stand it... (i've pictured it with the decor around it in the comments section...)

we bought a live edge table (on the way), and i'm trying to figure out the best dining chairs to go with it... looking for armless with either wood or faux leather finish.... preferably.

we have a more modern/transitional look in the rest of the room: cobalt solid rug; grey couch and arm chairs from room and board; white white accents

so i was thinking a MCM white chair with chrome legs....but.. am stuck.

would love recs... thanks!!

Kathi -- There are guidelines for table size related to room size, rug size, and number of guests. This is what I've learned from personal experience with banquet planning and dinners at home: Rug Size -- Allow a minimum of 24" from the edge of the table to the edge of the rug if you don't want guests moving chairs to damage the binding on your rug. Example: A table 4' x 8' should be anchored with a rug at least 8' x 12'. If you can manage a rug 30" out from your table edges, even better. Room Size -- Again, allowing space for guests to move chairs and leave the table is key. If guests need 24" minimum to exit, allow space for furniture you're placing around the walls near the table plus a minimum 12" walkway. If you prefer that guests not have to scrunch past others who are still seated, allow 24" for walking (width of a typical bathroom door). Number of Guests -- 20" x 12" of table space per guest works for family/friends dining. 30" x 14" of table space per guest is suitable for formal dining, assuming your dining chair dimensions aren't any wider. Consider how many chairs will fit between table legs as well. If your table has an overhang of 12" or more, table legs bumping knees shouldn't be an issue. Benches typically allow for more guest seating than chairs. A round table allows for extra elbow room between chairs because each guest has a pie-shaped area for dining vs. a rectangle. Ask your woodworker to show you samples of her various finishing regimens on the same kind of wood as your table. Then pick what you like, assuming that it has the appropriate durability. No way you can or should pick based on web site descriptions or whatever. If s/he hasn't used this product before s/he should make a sample, following the exact schedule of sanding and finish products that would be used on your table. This should preferably done using an offcut of the same boards as in your table. Anything else is asking for disaster. I can't imagine asking a customer to be a guinea pig for an unproven finish-- especially on a piece where it will be especially hard to strip it off and start over when you find out it has "the look of real plastic".

Style-wise, if I want a compliment, I was thinking that since the top has curvy designs and the bottom of the table has very boxy legs – that I should look for a chair that’s Got a boxy seat and back but that has curvy legs… I guess I’m just wondering what kind of chair would go best with this type of table..

Yes the open kitchen is right there! W chrome.. I should probably post more pix... We of course want comfort too - - no scoop seats because it’s not ergonomic for us. And we have a kid…

Everdebz, yes you’re right, I looked again and agree on no chrome. Eames molded plastic? They are actually super ergonomic, they mold to you a bit. Legs and seat come in many finishes. Yes, I know they’re more than $200 but you can get consignment deals or knock offs.

HKO ah! Yes I’ve seen those - is it called the Eiffel chair elsewhere? I was shying away from those because they looked like they have a scoop in the lower back area. Also I’m curious why black? There’s no black in the room anywhere…

Buy the best DR chairs you can afford...they bear a lot of weight and move a lot. So super Cheap ones will fall apart quickly and you’ll be money down the drain replacing them.

Hope you like cleaning if you go with white, esp if you have a child. I really like Pennydesign idea of a beautiful blue that pulls the colour of your painting.

Right, the knock off is the Eiffel chair. Isn’t your table base black or close to it? I thought black bases would correlate to that. We have the imitation bar stools and the real dining room chairs and they’re both quite comfortable. If you have DWR nearby, go sit in some.

Agnes, we have a six year old and the white Eames chairs and they’re super easy to clean. Spray and wipe. It really depends on the material. She got ketchup on them tonight and they’re good as New.

our child is 6 too!

The legs of the new table are dark brown… Yes good idea to go sit in some chairs!

Did any of the ones from bed Bath and beyond look possible? I like the idea of buying from them since they have such a great return policy if the chair proves terrible.

Well I just screwed up.. The base of the table is black! I could’ve sworn that I read that it was dark brown. Well – I guess now will have black in our room! Should be interesting… we might have to switch that base up!

Hi! I know I already started looking on Etsy for chrome table legs! Apparently it’s black stained Acacia – which one of the reviewer‘s complained is soft and dings up a bit. So it may well be worth spending 200 bucks on a pair of metal legs. I didn’t much care for the table base anyway… I think I may have to just wait until the table gets here! If the base is more of an espresso – or a black brown – that will match the kitchen counters. Ugh.

So verdict on the chair?

I'll be the dissenting opinion; some of these chairs are visually appealing but none of them look comfortable. Think of your family on Thanksgiving day. :-)

Go to some stores and sit in a bunch of styles and see which ones you like best.
