Young River Birch

I planted a tiny River Birch last summer. It was about 18 inches tall when I planted it. Because it was so young and small, I made a small cage of chicken wire to keep rabbits, deer, and other animals from eating away all the foliage while it was growing. Because of the abundance of rain we have had this spring and summer, the tree has more than tripled in height. At what point would it be ok to remove the chicken wire protecting the tree? Do I leave it for another year or more? Obviously, I am going to need to expand the “cage” as it grows more, but looking for guidance.
