Shingles Vaccine?
Comments (26)azzalea- I talked this over with my family physician of 20 years and he got the vaccine and I trusted his advice to get it myself. You are doing yourself a disservice by reading anecdotal reports about this on the Internet, getting concerned, and trying to form conclusions from piecemeal info. In your first post you said: "how often do we hear 5-10-15 years down the road, "Well, we thought it was safe at the time, but we're finding...." Well I'm trying to think when in my lifetime I've ever heard this said about a vaccine that had been approved for widespread use on the population, and I can't come up with one instance. No vaccine is 100% effective, and no vaccine doesn't produce some occasional side effect, but I think your numbers about people having reactions are distorting your view. The potential side effects -- redness, pain, swelling, itching, warmth, or a rash at the site of the injection -- are very mild compared to what can happen if you get it. In my case, I had no reaction of any kind. I have had those side effects from my annual flu shot, but it doesn't make me stop getting it though. Sadly, our society has become suspicious of medicine, and vaccinations in particular, and disease rates for preventable diseases are climbing. All the paranoia about vaccinations causing autism -- which have been thoroughly debunked -- has led parents to hold off on vaccinations...with the result that many children are dying from things such as whooping cough. The Internet is a wonderful source of information, and also a horrible one, because everyone, qualified or not, has a soapbox. If you want to research shingles vaccine further, get your info from reliable web sites, like Mayo Clinic and the Centers for Disease Control. It's your choice whether to get the vaccine. The only thing I can say is that if you opt out, and later contract shingles, you're going to be kicking yourself. I've had friends get it and it lasted for many painful months, and left one of them with permanent damage....See MoreI finally got vaccinated for shingles.
Comments (16)I don't get any preventative meds/shots. I don't like getting all those doses of aluminum. When I was younger I never heard of Alzheimer's and I heard only one mention of "old timers". Now everyone I know has someone that has AZ sometimes both grandparents or both parents. I still believe it is caused by aluminum. It's in every flu shot that we get every year, it is in the pneumonia shot which we get two of, it's in every shot you get. It's in our hand lotion, our anti antiperspirants, check ingredients on the products you buy. When my husband was diagnosed with AZ I did hours of research and found a document written by one of the top immunologist in this country. He said one day the care homes will be so full of AZ patients that they will be living on the streets...because of aluminum. He also said just 2 flu shot increases your chances of getting AZ by 20%. I also believe a lot of the medical people don't take them, one doctor told me not to take anymore anti acids because of the aluminum in them. I just use tums....See MoreThe new Shingles Vaccine
Comments (85)Maybe that explains why I haven't gotten a reminder about getting the second shot yet. I'm planning on waiting a bit anyway based on the reaction I got to the first one. I don't know anyone who got anything like that or what explains it. I want to talk to my doctor about it before having the second one. I hope they get the supply up for those who want the first shot and the ones who need the second one. I don't want to start over and get a third one -- assuming that's what they would do....See MoreShingles vaccine side effects
Comments (35)Marlene, I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction to the shot, but it does make me feel a little less of a freak. I haven't heard the shingles pain described that quite way, but my dad was a tough one and to complain about the pain was notable. Still, I assumed it was because of the open wounds on the skin. It wasn't until DH had it that we both realized the real pain is a deep nerve pain -- something unlike anything we normally experience. DH had some reoccurrence in his back and shoulder and used a TENS unit that seemed to help. The pain I had in my arm more than a week or two after the shot (when the redness and swelling had gone down) was very deep. Gave me some appreciation for what DH had been dealing with. Pudgeder, good thing you got the Shingrix when you did! Bbstx, your neighbor's experience is a scary one. My cousin's husband had it get to his eyes but not in them -- that was the first time I'd hear that shingles could cause blindness. Scary stuff....See Morerhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7
