Cross post! Kitchen countertop fiasco!
Comments (15)You may or may not be able to keep the backsplash when replacing the counter. Depends on the counter material you choose and how thick it is or what they need to do to install it. Most backsplashes are installed after the countertop is in. A new backsplash may not be as difficult or costly as you think. You might look through the Finished Kitchen Blog, or Houzz for examples of what different colors of counters might look like in your space. Not the specific materials, per se, but the colors and overall effect. Then you might have a better idea of the colors you might go with (regardless of the actual material). That might help you narrow down your search once you go looking at the real thing. There are so many choices out there it can be hard to decide if you don't have a starting point. If you think you're going to keep using the crockpot, you should look into materials that aren't affected by heat. My experience has only been with tile and (now) granite counters, so I have no helpful advice about the durability of the other types of materials. Your kitchen looks very cozy and inviting. I'm sure you'll be able to find a beautiful material for your counters....See MoreHelp! Need Paint Color for Kitchen (Cross Posted in Decorating)
Comments (25)Breezy- You are not a pain!! You are wonderful and very helpful. If it would not be for you I would have a misplaced prep sink!! I was just looking at the paint chips. And then today I went to BM and one of their consultants helped me. She did not like the idea of the beige colors or the true grays. We both really liked "Gray Wisp" which is almost identical to RH Silver Sage (she had a color chip for it)and "Quiet Moments". The first is more green and rich and the second lighter and more blue. I am really leaning towards the first. She gave me really large swatches to take home and try out. So I will let you know what I find out. Also the mud on the drywall is taking longer to dry so the earliest they can paint is Friday. So I have a wee bit of time to figure this out. Slush- Would love to see your photos of Revere Pewter and Carrington Beige. Since the living room/hallway is all monroe bisque is probably a good idea that I stay away from beige for the kitchen/dining area since those two rooms open into the LR and that is just a lot of beige. Lavender- Thanks...See MoreOur Updated Kitchen - Cross Post from Decorating
Comments (5)Your update seems to follow a very common chain of events--one new appliance leads to ALL new appliances which leads to "just a faucet"...then sink, counters, paint, light fixtures.... It looks great! Love your stools. (I admit, though, that I thought your "before" kitchen looked quite nice!)...See MoreCanada-US (and other?) cross-border seed swap
Comments (15)Vanisle_BC - That information you understood is correct. it's doubtful that the US and Canadian governments would fine you. However, the American recipient could be fined. And who in their right mind would want to trade seed under those conditions? If I had sent seeds to Canada and in return, the seeds the Canadian trader sent me were confiscated with perhaps a threat of a fine from the USDA, I would be furious. It is a very serious issue which my daughter experienced. She was living in the US and had purchased a home. At the time, I had a wholesale production nursery in Canada and she needed plants so she visited me and prior to her arrival, I had the Canadian government prepare a phytosanitary certificate as she was bringing back plants and seeds. My daughter added a few extra plants not listed on the phytosanitary certificate and put them in her vehicle. At the border, the customs agents went through every single pack of seed and every plant. They found the plants that weren't listed and confiscated them. Then they put her and her husband on a list of people know as 'Agricultural Threats'. Every single time she visited Canada for over 2 years and returned to the US, her vehicle was pulled over and she was detained for hours. She was lucky as she did not receive a fine. Although this website is international, the vast majority of people posting here are Americans. I believe that this is the reason they stopped the trading altogether and I highly doubt that they will ever allow for international seed trading again given the current USDA requirements. As I said, I've lived in both countries and although there is an 'imaginary' border between the two countries, the two governments are vastly different....See MoreOlychick
