Bring it on - Family Room Furniture Placement & Scale? +++

Hello! What do you think about my attempt to scale out my family room below? Sofa length toughest for me... B chairs - scale if swivels?!? Tons more info below. And any other thoughts you are willing to share!

To explain the floor plan - I have EDUCATED guesses on the room and rug measurements called out, while the architectural plans are real measurements. We changed the wall of windows to 4 windows + french doors - faces the backyard. The left wall is a fireplace + TV with built-ins on either side.

Beach colors overall but actual colors and fabrics of each piece to be settled AFTER I choose pieces because most have flexibility of custom upholstery

Sofa - I guessed 85" at the time of making my drawing, but I'm really uncertain on this. How does that compare to the scale of the neighboring swivel chairs? The scale of the room? The scale of the fireplace? UGH. Textured fabric with variation in blues like last photo attached - weird crop shows my computer savvy :(.

Chair(S) A - A wing chair - reading spot that can enjoy a backyard view or conversation or a quick rest while waiting for water to boil :). Front Gate Emery Wing Chair or CB Luxe wing (both attached). Solid Blue or patterned fabric that pulls room together.

Chair B - Two leather swivel chairs. Looking at Arhaus Dune, but only have photo of VERY similar Crate Barrell Axis II chair; Dune has T-shaped cushion. Swivel allows pivot to conversation, toward kitchen, or toward TV. Will 40" swivels work here? Mushroom colored leather.

Sofa options -- Looking at Ethan Allen Arcata (attached) or Arhaus Dune (not attached, but similar lines to the Arcata but doesn't have the wood all around the bottom) or rounded arm Arhaus Rockway (attached in chair shape but you can get an idea of the profile). These various lines can get me sofas from 88" - 110". Also, should sofa arms be track like the swivel? Or is it better to mix it up? The swivel are track arms and the Rockway sofa has a curve to it. How should the rug size - the 14 foot side - compare to the sofa length?

In regard to the rug, it should be longer than the sofa, and it can be quite a bit longer. What's really more important is the size of the room, and you want the rug to take up the major portion of it. Fifty-two inches seems huge for an armchair, 36 inches seems a more reasonable size. A room generally looks more relaxed and harmonious if the heights of the sofa and all the chairs are the same. I personally would not choose a wing chair, which will be the odd man out.

Thank you. Good to know about size of rug versus length of sofa. Odd man out is something to consider. The room has 10 foot ceilings. I felt a wing chair would help draw the eye up. Additionally we are all very tall and appreciate the high seat height and back height.

Thank you. That information will help since I couldn't read the dimensions of the room. I thought the one was fourteen, but couldn't tell if the other was sixteen or eighteen. I also have one more question. I drew up what I thought you meant about the location of your fireplace and the windows shown below. Is this correct?

There was no mention of a wheelchair in the original post, however, having recently been confined to a wheelchair I have some personal knowledge on this subject. Any of the chairs in the room could be removed to provide the space required. However, if you would like to use an area rug, you'll have to make sure the rug is a level loop rug and very flat, .........kind of like an indoor outdoor rug. Those rugs are stiff enough to withstand the friction from the rubber wheels and flat enough to be able to turn on the rug in the wheelchair without shifting the rug.

Furniture placement in a family room with two focal points

The room is approximately 16x 20.5, with a 12 foot opening to the kitchen as shown in the photo. Windows are south facing. And the fireplace can be seen from the foyer entry. The furniture was all left to us from the previous owners. We are open to painting or replacing it, as well as painting the walls and carpet to brighten the space. Thank you again for any input!

Please get your room dimensions onto a grid where each big box is 12" by 12". This will make your planning much easier,I promise. Arm-wise,I prefer arms to stay in the same family,but not necessary to match (but I like a collected look). I would never buy a 52 wide chair for your space...probably not for any space but I do like that Frontgate chair ;-) How many do you typically seat,where will the TV be? You mentioned you guys are tall,how loungy are you...this will make a difference on how deep and how high a backrail you want on both your sofa and the reading chair. Sofa length isn't the only thing to consider. A low backrail can be uncomfy for taller folks when the cushion alone doesn't offer enough support. Have you sat in any of these? Kudos to you for doing lots of planning. There is more math in great rooms than you might think.

I'm a huge fan of 72" sofas. It is rare for more than 2 people to want to sit on a sofa at the same time. If you want room for a child to join you, just use a single long cushion instead of 2 cushions for it. I have one in my own LR and when I host holiday dinners, a child or two alway join his parents on my 72" sofa. It will leave you with room for bigger end tables with lamps and room for other things on them as well.

Ok, i wasn't going to bore you all with the details of the crazy 52" chair - i only included it because it represents the Rockway line for which I'm looking at a couch in the family. :)

I want two 40" swivels next to each other by the window.... but what kind of clearance does a swivel need?

Encouraging about not going overboard with sofa length. True that realistically four people don't want to sit elbow to elbow. Also good point about more options for end tables with the balance of space.

I think the 12"x12" grid is a good idea. I also have painters tape.

I also just got back from Ethan Allen... oh boy.
