Comments (12)Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I forgot to address the brick tile floor in my opening post. I will be scrubbing it with a grout brush and then either sealing it again, which doesn't really seem to work, or I will check with the person that installed it and see what he suggests. The brick tiles have been installed since 1996. The brick tiles look great every time I wash them, but the grout, not so much. I usually use Murphy's Oil Soap. My DH did not want to go through the upheaval of installing new tile so we need to make them the best they can be. The grout is a charcoal gray, and when seen in person blends with the countertop. We will also be getting a new range hood, and lighting in the kitchen. The drysink seems overly large for the area where it now resides, but that is the only space available. I did not care for it back , and flat against the wall. My DH does not want to angle it any harder because he feels it would stick out at the archway to far. We did try it in the corner between the sliding glass door and the bay window but it looked like a monster hanging over the table. We also took the leaf out of the table which made it square, but neither of us liked that look, and it did not help the 'monster' in the corner. As far as the calender height, I am 5'3", and my DH is 5'10". He tried to strike a happy medium, but it can be lowered if it looks awful. Are the 'twins' to high, also?Is there a 'formula' for placing pictures, decorations etc. on walls? He likes to place them lower than I like, but I guess he is right since that is what you are advising. If I tell him to lower them, he will say. "see, you listen to your HD buddies, but not to me". : ) Thanks again. Jane PS: The drapes were ready made tab tops that I turned in to drapes. Both the tab tops and the valances are from Boscov's where I hope they can get me fabric to match from their distributer. The manufacturer is A.L. Ellis (made in the USA), and the floral pattern is called Glenboro....See Morehelp with Victorian fireplace!!
Comments (9)So the insider of the hearth looks like it has cast iron fire back plates. See link. https://www.woodlanddirect.com/Fireplace-Accessories/Firebacks http://www.noreast1.com/mta005a.JPG Someone might have tried painting it if they were not using the fireplace for heating. They are usually just plain metal of some kind and are used to keep the heat reflected back into the room. I'm puzzled by the tile on the hearth because it doesn't look like something you could build a fire on top of safely. If the flue keeps dropping soot, then it likely the flue needs to be cleaned ASAP. No fires until you hire a chimney sweep to remove the creosote from the chimney. This is a dangerous situation. Comments (8)Few suggestions. I'd remove the shutters. I think they are too thin and don't add much w/the brick. Black and crisp white, portico over the front door If you wanted to try a bright white trim and deep black shutters, maybe, but I'd prob lose them altogether You mentioned Urbane Bronze. here's what that would look like w/tthe brick, somewhat, and a darker trim color or use the creamy white for the trim. your current white trim is too yellow looking. have you considered painting the brick w/Romabio? IT's a natural lime product. if you did that, removed the shutters, and painted your front door this light blue, it would look like this they used the Masonry Flat for this brick. I love the copper awning over the front door too. Here's the back and the colors used. (this Masonrty flat can be tinted any color) if you like the limewas look, Romabio Classico would be the option. (try it out. it will hose off in the first 72 hours if you don't like it. try a sample on the side or back) wood front door, limewash, and darker shutters. also new black exterior lights and gutters I really like the look of this one too. paint the trim around the windows in the urbane or the iron ore, and limewas the brick much more distresssed with olive green shutters Limewash, distressed brick w/Taupe and copper color accenting. off white trim color the masonry choice. heavier coverage. black accents similar home style. they did the brick w/the gray, and added a covered porch....See MoreHelp me choose a whole house paint color for new build!! Comments (60)Hi Beth. Sigh... Our 1979 house had white primer on all interior walls when we bought it in 1998. So that's 19 years with the original owners not painting it. I had forgotten this more that, a couple years after we bought it, we had all the downstairs painted an off-white, still not realizing that was the first finish coat. I realized it when I was washing walls upstairs after finishing the downstairs. Then we went through some years thinking we would move. Now we have plans to gut the upstairs which will never see more than primer I guess....See Moreshowing my home love
