Need to choose paint colors for whole house and am overwhelmed!
Comments (20)I toured a 1913 house museum last weekend, and there were at least 3 pink rooms: the master bedroom (redone after the husband died; I wonder what it looked like before?), the daughter's room, and the drawing room (with dark wood and silk paneled walls). I've never been a big fan of pink, but every now and then a pink bedroom will just tug at my heart! Maybe someday if I'm a widow or divorcee. :p I could envision a mauve dining room, particularly in a historic home, but I'm not sure about diaphanous pink...a laundry room or powder room might be your best bets, but I don't think a guest room would be out of the question. On the other hand, if you don't have a clear vision of the spaces yet and are using furniture you already have, your best bet is probably to pick a few neutrals (check out Benjamin Moore's Affinity line) that go with your current things and are flexible enough that you can imagine them going with future acquisitions. Once you've lived there a while, you'll be less overwhelmed and have a better idea of what you want the rooms to look like. At that point you can repaint a room at a time if need be, and you'll be in a much better position to judge how light affects the colors....See MorePlease help me choose a paint color
Comments (33)The concepts of color "depth" and "complexity" might be the most difficult to pinpoint and explain. Deeper, depth, complex are words that get tossed around a lot. No one wants a Plain Jane paint color when "complex" sounds like it would be so much prettier and better, right? These descriptions of color are about nuance. Nuance is not the same as LRV. Lightness value (LRV) and grayscale value (usually 10 gray squares) is where most people get confused. And, really, it is understandable. They're both scales of gray squares - but the gray squares are not the same grays. LRV and grayscale are inextricably tied but are distinctly different parts of color that can be measured and plotted separately. LRV is measured by device. Grayscale is a visual assessment. I just answered a question on the Paint forum that's similar. I think the images included help illustrate the difference. Here is a link that might be useful: LRV and Nuance...See MoreHelp Choosing a whole house color!
Comments (8)Beige is a flesh tone, with a pink hue. I think the Camel Back and the Whole Wheat are more of a golden color, and therefore versatile. Of course, the type of natural light available or the type of lighting you install can change the way they look, just as the accessories or flooring will. I like using the SW website to find complimentary colors that will blend with your choice for the walls of your house. It's nice to have walls in a tone that can work with other hues so if you want to bring in a different color of accessory or drape or upholstery it is versatile to that. I think these colors will make a variety of colors look nice, including Ruby or Garnet...there isn't a gemstone and few other stones, pearls, opals, rose quartz... that doesn't look pretty with a gold ring, for instance. :)...See MoreHelp Finalize paint color for a new build, for whole House
Comments (4)There are actually 117 things that I consider when doing a custom color consult for one room. You’re doing a whole house, with far more variables. You have already made a lot of permanent decisions that may, or may not, work with a single color. You’re actually asking a lot of one paint color here, unless you had it in mind all along with the rest of the selections.A single paint color won’t weave disparate elements together into a whole cloth. Most likely, a coordinated whole palette that has different major and minor colors for the home as a whole will be the solution. That may or may not include a single paint color for the whole. I’d suggest working with a designer for a color consult. Youneill need samples of everything you r chosen so far for permanent finishes, to start with. Then you’ll get into lighting, which ways the windows face, the views from outside to inside and inside to outside. And all the rest of the 117 points, magnified by X. Good luck!...See MoreMary Hughes
