Please help me choose a paint color
Comments (33)The concepts of color "depth" and "complexity" might be the most difficult to pinpoint and explain. Deeper, depth, complex are words that get tossed around a lot. No one wants a Plain Jane paint color when "complex" sounds like it would be so much prettier and better, right? These descriptions of color are about nuance. Nuance is not the same as LRV. Lightness value (LRV) and grayscale value (usually 10 gray squares) is where most people get confused. And, really, it is understandable. They're both scales of gray squares - but the gray squares are not the same grays. LRV and grayscale are inextricably tied but are distinctly different parts of color that can be measured and plotted separately. LRV is measured by device. Grayscale is a visual assessment. I just answered a question on the Paint forum that's similar. I think the images included help illustrate the difference. Here is a link that might be useful: LRV and Nuance...See MoreWhole house paint - new build
Comments (0)Hi. We are building a home and it is time for paint. It is a rustic vibe with leathered granite in tones of brown, beige, copper and a bit of cream in the kitchen. The cabinets will be knotty alder in chocolate and natural. The hardwood is a media brown with some stressing and slight color variations of medium and lighter brown. My windows are bisque. I am looking for a whole house color in a very neutral family of brown (not orange or red tones). Also need to do dining room, office, game room, master bed and bath and laundry (which has gray quartz counters and darker slate flooring). kids are on their own. Any help is appreciated. I think my painter uses kelly moore. My thought so far is clippership twill as main color with new linen trim and star of the garden ceiling for warmth. My concern is that clippership twill is dark for the bulk of the house. I do want it to contrast with the trim though....Thanks for any and all help....See MoreHelp Picking Exterior Paint Colours For New Home Build
Comments (9)Janet, you have my sympathy as well. I would only add that you should pick colors that make you feel happy. I know the trend is toward neutrals, but if this is your long-term home, I would not worry about painting for resale, but to choose colors you really like and that flatter you. Look in your closets and see what colors are prevalent -- that is a good clue. Several years ago, I lost both my mom and dad just a few months apart, and shortly after the loss of a very dear friend. I was devastated as you might imagine. Fortunately for me, DH and I had just purchased a fixer-upper, and we had always agreed that we wanted to paint in colors we loved. We ended up painting in a warm palette of spring greens and warm, buttery yellows, and every time I stepped into the house after work, my spirits lifted. We just sold the home, and despite my agents suggestion that we "soften" the paint colors a bit, we did not. We had multiple offers after 5 days on the market it, so our color choices didn't even hurt us financially, and I am convinced that that they helped me through a very difficult time. My best wishes to you and your family....See MoreHelp me choose new home exterior door colours please :)
Comments (8)The advice I have seen would be similar to this: the garage should not be the focal point but rather, should blend in. So you would select a color that would cause it to disappear against the siding material. The front door should be highlighted either with color or interesting features such as attractive planters, lighting, etc. Pretty sure most advice would call for selecting one “visually heavy” material (either brick or stone) but not both. And I believe they would recommend not having the stone facade run up toward the roof of just one area (because it’s a visually heavy or grounded material it should stay low to the ground). These are suggestions I have read over the past couple of months and learned from reading various books. I’m not a pro or a designer....See MoreMary Hughes
