Harvey window replacement

I am replacing 10 vinyl windows (argon seal broke in most of them). I do not know the current window type as they were here when I purchased. A contractor has quoted me a price of $6896 for install and window. He only uses Harvey windows. Is this a reasonable quote for replacement vinyl? And is this a good window?? All windows fairly standard four front windows slightly larger and a single level home. Going with double hung. Seriously didn’t know window shopping was so complicated:).

Price isnt too bad but for the same price you can probably get a much higher end window such as Okna, soft lite ,sunrise, ot kensington.

harvey is maybe an average window at best, nothing special at all. The others i mentioned make very solid windows. Nicer looking, more air tight and efficient.

Thanks for your thoughts, @millworkman. I understand the Essentials is fiberglass interior and fiberglass exterior. I have not really looked at that because we would like a stained wood, traditional looking interior which is what we have currently. Our house is a colonial style cape. I did see the Elevate which has the wood interior with the fiberglass exterior. I did not like the wood lip at the top of the bottom sash of the Elevate...felt it was a bit contemporary looking. I don't know of any others in our area (NH) to consider at this point (have looked at Harvey Majesty, Pella LIfestyle, Andersen Woodwright, Andersen 400 series Tilt Wash and the Marvin Elevate). I strongly recommend that you avoid Marvin Windows. In 2011 I spent thousands installing what I believed to be high-end durable Marvin windows: 6 casements and 3 double hung. The casements are not durable and wear poorly. Within the first year, the hardware was broken and on several occasions I was unable to close one window (an "utlimate" casement with transom). The casement hardware is cheap and poorly designed. Here are specifics: 1 - Antique brass hardware on three casements is not solid and the finish peels and bubbles. Screws rusted, loosened and now protrude from the handles. In addition, the hardware is loose -- it jiggles when turning the handle. 2- The locking mechanism on the "ultimate" casement gets stuck on occasion. My contractor had to come open my window this week because it was cold -- there was a 1/4 inch gap between the two panels. In addition, the bottom sill is loose. 3 - Second floor casement windows have plastic hardware that are also loose. The tongue into which the lock slides keeps falling out. No problems with the double hung windows, which have solid metal hardware. To be clear, the problem is with the manufacturing, not with the distributor (Super Enterprises) which has been responsive. BOTTOM LINE: If you NEVER OPEN your windows, consider Marvin. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Millworkman probably knows the wood window offerings as good, if not better, than anyone. Marvin is well regarded, usually for good reason, as one of the top wood windows made today. Harvey, as a company, is what I would consider better than average and better than mediocre to quote millworkman. With that said, I cannot comment personally on their wood window. Good window window evaluation criteria (just some) would be: -cladding type? If aluminum, roll formed or extruded? What gauge? -what type of base wood is used? -any finger joints in the sill or structural wood? -warranty?

1) Most manufacturers are going to defer to dealers on customer service issues like this. The party that you write the check to is the one that should help you, manufacturers simply aren't set up for retail customer service. TBH, your experience sounds pretty good compared to some others. 2) There may very well be truth to the information that you were given. As Todd said we can't know for sure, but the sizing issue may have been the dealer(I'd say in most cases its the dealer's fault), the replacement part (being top instead of bottom) may have been as well. The glass seal issue is definitely the manufacturer, however whether they build it in house or outsource, quality control is down across the industry. Fewer workers and high demand mean that they are trying to pump out product and things get missed. I have yet to see anything truly awful, but annoyances like that where new parts are needed are not uncommon. I'm not here to apologize for that manufacturer in any way, but this is general stuff that you will find across the industry right now. Frankly, I don't know how many would even offer that gift card. Two follow up questions: - What were you hoping to hear as a response from them? Certainly a simple admission of mistake and apology are always nice. - What did your dealer say and why haven't they been the point person on this?

+1. Harvey makes and OK window, but inside of their ownership group they now own Soft-Lite which makes a higher end product in their Imperial LS and Elements window. If he can source Harvey, he should easily be able to buy the other as well.
