What sort of look are you going for, Holly?

Something that will go in my Swedish country house. The ONE US company that used to make Swedish designs has gone under. Buying wallpaper from overseas is $$$, and the choices are still quite limited. I could even happily use something that's a softer vintage floral style. Again, something that gives the impression that it's been in that room for years.

I've found one designer on Spoonflower that has stuff I like. You have to be a little careful, because some of her designs are more for fabrics and don't scale nicely to wallpaper (Although if I asked her, she'd probably happily make adjustments). And a few of them don't have a well-designed repeat. I don't know if she has the skillset to fix THAT.

A smattering of the things I like, without regard (currently) for which will fit into the overall color scheme. Just an idea of the right "look" in a pattern:"

I could, if it comes down to it, even do some designs myself if I don't find anything I like. I have both the software and the skill set. I just don't have enough of a mental library of appropriate designs yet, to really come up with something I love. (And that damask with the roosters is super duper cute). I could also happily find a vintage paper and have it reproduced, if serendipidty provides.

I do have a certain degree of worry about ending up with rolls that have white space from the printer at the edges and other PITA elements from custom printers. While I fully intend to order swatches, that doesn't necessarily get around ALL the issues. Hence, my questioning the hive mind on experiences. :-)

I'm also open to sources of Swedish paper patterns. I'm not going to paper the whole house. Probably the powder room, laundry, upstairs bath, guest room, and possibly my youngest daughter's. Maybe the master bath as well, I don't know.

With the proviso that I have no personal experience whatsoever with using wallpaper (other than scraping off some awful stuff in a bathroom 30 years ago), or with Spoonflower, have you looked at Hygge & West, especially their new line with Tilton Fenwick? I just saw some in a blog post yesterday morning so it was at the top of my mind when I saw your post.

I think you can find paper you like without going custom. Look at Farrow and Ball, Cole and Son, and Thibaut.

I feel like I'm getting warmer. :-) William Morris is always lovely, if a bit heavy for my taste. I may have to dig through the Farrow and Ball archive. Everybody has currently embraced the grey/modern palette, and it's hard to find the soft, sunny pastels. I appreciate all the links thus far, and welcome more.

@CPA - a couple questions: Did you design your own patterns and have them printed? Did you paper hangers complain about the need to trim?

The darker, busier, Wm Morris patterns can be heavy, but something like this, in several colorways, is light and airy,

Not that yellow and blue can't make a pretty combination. :-) I'll have to go look, thank you!

Not this time, but I was a wallpaper and fabric designer for 22 years when I was younger. I know nothing about the printed papers nowadays as I come from the days when everything was roller printed or hand screen printed (like the Bradbury and Bradbury papers I got).

Mine wasn't hung yet, but the paper hanger I found didn't balk at the paper and said he's done it plenty of times.

I was going to suggest Schumacher.

The Swedish company Duro also has some nice offerings, if you can get your hot little hands on it, stateside. I might have to ask my designer if she knows how to get some.

Walnut Wallpaper carries Sandberg and similar. (trade discount) If you have a specific pattern in mind,check with Mahone's. Stylewise,I think Thibaut might be worth a closer look. I've only seen a few examples of Spoonflower "dupes" and they were laughably bad but I'd think a simpler paper in a more restricted colourway might be more successful.

Holly, does wallpaperdirect.com in the UK ship to the US? I'm fairly certain I've seen various Scandinavian brands there, but not sure about Duro, while looking at Sanderson and Zoffany patterns.

There are a few Duro patterns that come up there, although not a lot. There are also some brick and mortar retailers that carry it - mostly NY, LA, Chicago. Another Swedish paper company has retailers in (I don't quite get it but) Dallas and Boise.

If I find something specific, I'm probably going to be e-mailing to see who has WHAT. And what order lead times are. Possibly they are quite long.

Thibaut was another good suggestion with some potential, as I page through their designs.

Defintely looking like it's worth my while to order swatches from a few companies and compare. ;-)
