Comments (76)The peeve of mine that gets the best workout has to be improper detailing of porches or porticos that folks are trying to make appear classically-inspired. Seems like most of the time the lintels are larger or thicker than the column underneath - a big no-no. Then, the entablature is compressed to fit under the eaves or second floor window line so much so that the proportions are further distorted. It is also likely that the columns are some mishmash of style, composition or proportion. If the beam is arched, it appears it was cut freehand with a jigsaw, without regard to any evenness or flow to the curving line. The overhanging portions are quite often botched, too. From zero overhang to a fascia that is equal in visual weight to the lintel, we see it all around here. You might expect this on starter homes or where an owner/builder is in charge, but on houses double the median price? I do go on, but I'll finish with this-- good proportions don't cost more than poor ones. Casey...See MorePainting our bathroom vanity--can't decide black or white
Comments (22)Thanks so much! I am heading there tomorrow. Well I guess I will call first to see if they are open since its the 4th. The closest one is actually across the state line about 35 minutes away. I picked up some samples of the browns from Lowe's last night but had a sample of SW Jute Brown downstairs and am going to try it first on the master one but I want black in Brett's Bathroom. Yours is beautiful! Alicia...See MoreWhat shade of off-white/cream for a 1930's Spanish style home?
Comments (22)Hello everyone! Thanks for all your help. My paint work was finished today. Here is how it turned out! I'm very pleased. Looks just like a cake. Colors: Body was BM Ivory Tusk - just the hint of cream I was hoping for. windows and trim are BM Desert Rose, and corbels are BM Chocolate Candy Brown. I also painted the little round vents a terracotta color which I really love the look of. I didn't intend to go with all Benjamin Moore colors but with all the sample cans I tore through, they were the only store that was open late enough for me to go repeatedly after work! Next up, fixing my landscape......See MoreLove our new home, but hate the antique white cabinets/kitchen! Help!
Comments (50)We moved into our forever home last year. The kitchen and bath cabinets and layouts were the one of the things that didn't really work for us. the first thing we did was change the cabinet hardware and wall colors in the whole house. First step in making it better. We now like the kitchen layout and cabinets, they grew on us. The added expense of changing everything wasn't worth it to us. And we are okay with that. Just saying this to be another voice to live with it for awhile. Put the color you love on the wall instead of the cabinets and decorate with it. If you decide in a while you need to change the expensive things, you will have had time to figure out what works and what doesn't in its current layout. And already have the things to coordonate with it. I think the flooring and countertop would look nice with navy walls and copper accents. I would forget the sink. but it is your house. do what will make you happy. We still plan on changing the master bath/closet/laundry area of our home. But adding a garage comes before that. Priorities. Have fun making your new house your home....See MoreTravis Hall
