Landscape Design Design Dilemma

Landscaping Design, Front Door Walkway Advice

Hi,

Advice needed for landscaping design. Let me start off by saying I have zero gardening skills but I'm looking for a simple spruce up to our walk way that leads to the front door.

I'm in Florida; so advice on colorful easy to maintain plants that I can replace the ones seen in the pictures (that came with the house) with would be welcomed. A bonus would be colorful plants that don't attract mosquitoes which I'm a magnet for.

You could use this area for seasonal flowers. It would be helpful to see the entire yard to choose something that will go with the existing landscape.

It looks like you already have attractive low maintenance plants that haven't gotten overgrown. This seems to be a rather narrow space, so I don't know if there would be enough space or sun for lavender plants, but they have some pest repellent properties. They need full sun and they grow 2'-3' tall. How wide is your space and how much sun does it get?

This is a cute garden that I snapped a picture of the other day. Could I do something like this with the addition of some shrubs or other taller plantings as focal points? Although there are a lot of plants, it doesn't look too terribly hard. Lamb's ear, sedum, not sure what the variegated ground cover is. I should have added in my first post that I have a 3 y.o. and 1 y.o. and a large vegetable garden in the back, so I'd like the front to be relatively low maintenance. I am not opposed to covering the whole bed with shrubs and ground cover, then adding interest as the years go on.

Here's one thing I forgot to think about. We use our front door a lot. There are fallen petals right outside the front door about 8 months of the year, and they get tracked into the house all the time. As to the dormant period, which is only about six weeks here (right after pruning) the bare canes look surprisingly good when nicely and neatly arranged. People even comment on how interesting the structure of the rose is when leafless. But think carefully about that fallen petal issue. I keep a broom by the front door now. Have to. If your archway is away from the front door, it's not so much of an issue.

A pergola is lovely in a place with lots and lots of sun. Elsewhere, it can get dark and dank in the winter. I'd make a path to your door. Much of it can be part of your driveway. Just replace with brick or pavers or something visual that you can still drive on. Then, I'd clear out the shrubs along the side of the house with the door. I'd turn the bed by the right front of the house into a semi-circle no larger than the width of the house and have a variety of plants and heights instead of that yew hedge. (Not sure it's yew, but it looks like it). Window boxes are hard to keep looking nice. They don't have a huge amount of space for roots, keeping them watered enough but not soggy can be a challenge. This is why you see a lot more window boxes in carefully staged Houzz photos than in real life.

I think a variety of flowing grass , blowing and arching over walk will soften the space, maintenance free and many lovely colors to blend together

I know nothing about plants for Florida, but I do know that in my zone that very narrow spot really couldn't support anything much more than sedums and possibly muscaris or liriope. It's just too narrow. And what's there now is quite unattractive.
