my3dogs or others: furniture scratch repair

Working on a reupholstery project and have a few odd marks on this chair. In the 2nd photo, you can see that the marks are white. The chair is fairly wide--perhaps getting it thru a doorway caused this issue? Anyway, I cannot get these marks out or covered. My fingernail doesn't budge them so I am fairly sure it is not paint. The marks are not scratches denting into the surface. Next, I tried a scratch cover product that I had in the house (Old English scatch cover)--didn't cover either. Any suggestions as to what product next to choose?

Thanks to Chijim for alerting me to this post! LOVE the chair frame; it one of my favorite styles that I re-do.

Is it possible that the chair is...a faux painted non-wood product? I haven't run into that in my projects, but I would guess it's possible. Can you run your finger over the white areas to see if they are a hair's width lower than the surrounding untouched areas? In other words, are they the actual chair material, or have you been able to see actual wood in other areas nearby?

I have some furniture touch-up markers, similar to these, but I see that they say they are for wood. Furniture Repair Kit Wood Markers - Set Of 13 - Markers And Wax Sticks

I also have acrylic paints in many colors, and I could see blending some to touch up the areas, but then you'd have to seal those areas with something that would protect them, like a water-based poly.

Thanks for responding. Posting on the weekend can be hit or miss. This chair is stained wood and not painted I think it's a pretty good chair--a Drexel Heritage, down wrapped back cushion etc. Actually, the frame is crazy hard and I had to use a lot of muscle to coax out the staples. Thanks for your touch-up suggestions. I'll pickup the various markers and hopefully, they will provide better coverage compared to the Old English.

I do moving claims. Many times I can raise 80-90% of a dent with steam -- I put a drop of water on the spot and wet a rag and then touch my burn-in knife to the spot. To get the last little bit, I usually have to do a repair with a resin stick. If you are going to get touch up markers (I use them regularly, too), get the ones made with lacquer. The ones you find at most home centers (Minwax comes to mind) are simply stain in a pen. They don't have enough binder (varnish) to hold the color and it's easily wiped off with use unless you top coat it. One reason I mentioned the diagnoses in this article is the last piano I worked on was at a move claim, though it was not move damage. The panel around the foot pedals had a lot of white scuffs. I used the wet it trick and found the color restored so I sprayed it with a couple of coats of lacquer and the people though I walked on water. Note though, there is another type of white scuff that runs in lines parallel to the floor about 2" above it. These are usually paint transfer from a vacuum cleaner's bumper. Bumper hits white woodwork and picks up paint, then hits furniture and deposits the paint.

IMO I would first solve the function issues you have outlined and then address the style issues you have requested. As with every design problem there may be compromises to get most of what you've listed, but function shouldn't be one of them. I've attached a layout and some examples of furnishings & unique equipment that may accommodate many of your requests. Please carefully think about keeping a frankly huge armoire, that you still have to spend time and money to refinish, to hold a printer that could reasonably fit on a small shelf. The printers seem to get smaller everyday as do the computers/laptops. How many of us got stuck with armoires to hold huge TVs? The local Goodwill where I live won't even take armoires anymore because no one wants them in their homes. That item in particular, from my perspective as a designer, is like fitting a square peg in a round hole. I often look to the RV industry to provide me with clever equipment that does double duty, like hidden work surfaces that can pull out of standard cabinets when needed, and slide away when not in use. I think you can assemble a workable room, with the special style you're looking for & even that special settee, but I would build in files and storage which is always needed, find a clever way to close away your DH clutter so you don't have to nag, & look for high tech items to help you reach you goals. Built in wall units are not inexpensive, but everything doesn't need to be custom. Cabinets from any modular kitchen cabinet manufacturer, even IKEA, could be used to assemble your workstations. sarschlos: I remember your successful thread about your buffet and even noted down the steps, but you are right that I did not realize the importance of doing the buffing with the RAF--not beforehand. This has definitely been a learning experience which I intended it to be when I purchased these tables. I wanted to try on something else before starting on the DR chairs/table, though I've now come to realize this is a much more complicated project than I anticipate to DR set to be. I do think that there was no way I could escape needing to strip and refinish these tables--as there were different problems with each one. Seems the other table has fisheye from prior Pledge contamination and bobsmyuncle over on the woodworking forum recommends stripping that as well. Both looked to have a lot of lacquer/shellac that was probably incorrectly applied sometime in the past which led to these problems--and would also not allow the RAF to penetrate much, though I do notice improved results using the Murphy's Oil soap/RAF on the table legs (left table is the one that I used the RAF, right is not done yet): Even before refinishing, the stripped table looks so much better than either of the two tables before: Now I just need to figure out best way to refinish. Bobsmyuncle recommends first putting a couple of light coats of shellac to seal in the silicone (Pledge) contamination and the finish it. I'm wondering what type of stain/finish to use or even I need one at all as there still looks to be a lot of color in the wood and I don't want to darken the inlay. If anyone can recommend some specific brands to use, that'd be much appreciated.

I thought it looked familiar! My 2nd upholstery project was on a Drexel Heritage chair in 2012. Here is the before, and we may have the same chair!! That's light reflection on the arm of mine, and I just checked mine, and don't have any of what you have. I hope those markers would work, and I will sometimes use more than one of them to get a match on whatever I'm working on. Good luck - it's a wonderful chair!

Wow, they do look the same! I have that dip in the back cushion too. I will post when I am done.
