Abraham Darby today
Comments (29)@noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque) yeah I hear you on the watering issue. I think I have that problem with my potted roses too. I've had several that I water abundantly, but they hold so much of the water at the bottom of the barely 15in tall pots they're in (even with adequate drainage), that they don't really grow much after the first year or so. What I didn't realize was that the soil actually decomposes fast. I've noticed the soil level going down over time in my pots. I just thought it was settling, but never thought that it was decomposing! Definitely feel you on the weight of the pots too. I've moved soooo many this year and it's not an easy task! @strawchicago z5 it's funny you mention air pots because I plan to transition all of my roses to them! I've seen such good results from people who use them, particularly @Hoang Ton - Zone 9a (he basically single handedly sold me with his youtube channel. Also, sorry to drag you into this, dude haha). I like the Air Pots because they solve all the water table issues I have with my potted roses. I can also alter them to make them taller if needed. I have a 4 year old own root firefighter rose (full sun - regular watering/fertilizer) that basically did nothing until I put it in one of these (19in wide plastic pot to 12in wide 5 gal air pot) and it took off like a champion after just a couple weeks. The only difference was the air pot. It blew my mind! @Dave5bWY Nice that you were able to move and have a new Abe going. I'm glad it's going well! I'm hoping moving Abe to air pot will help with the issues I've had with it, since it allows for better air flow around the root zone. Another cool thing about them is if it becomes root bound, I don't have to move the plant at all. I can just remove the side cover and trim off any roots that I need to before putting it back on. I'm really excited about trying these pots out with these roses! Thanks ya'll for your responses, they were very helpful! I'll try to keep ya'll updated on old Abe as things progress :-)...See MoreAbraham Darby vs Colette for climbing
Comments (28)Diane, thank you so very much for your guidance and advice. The Colette I ordered is grafted on Dr. Huey. I am in zone 8b about 40 miles from Portland, OR. My garden gets full sun, all day. The arbor I am going to order is not here yet, it's one I am looking at on Etsy, a company called A Rustic Garden. Their arbors look very sturdy and hefty and well worth the $$, unlike some of the spindly little arbors one sees offered through so many online garden supplies. My very favorite place for quality obelisks and arbors and all things garden is GardenArtisans.com. They are fabulous but so $$$$$ that I own only one of their gorgeous items, an obelisk that I treasure. As far as Colette, I am so looking forward to her, just hope she is as thrilled with her new home here as I am to welcome her. I also snagged an Augusta Luise from Palatine that I am thrilled about as well as Lavender Crush and Twilight Zone from Regan. You are my inspiration! Happy New Year to you and your family and everyone else here, having like-minded rose lovers to converse with is such a delight! I'm holding my breath until spring (hurry up, spring!) hoping that all my roses came through OK. We had an ice storm that covered everything in a 2" coat of ice unlike anything I have ever seen before. In all directions, it was like looking at a mirror, just a sheet of glass reflecting everything around. I will find out which roses are hardy here! It does get hot here in summer, especially in the sun trap that is my rose garden....See MoreLast chance sale for Abraham Darby at Heirloom Roses
Comments (31)When Heirloom sent out a notice it would be the last chance for own root Abe Darby, I immediately hit the buy button, now I am so glad. This morning I raced through the chores, finished watering the pot ghetto, and almost went in without smelling my first Abraham Darby bloom. Abe's piteous little bull nosed bud struggled to open from months of relentless rain. Even stunted , that frilly petal packed , sublimely tea perfumed rose is why I bought Abe again and would say it is without a doubt my favorite rose in the world....See Moreclematis with Abraham Darby rose
Comments (10)Thank you! I love how the Margaret weaves into the roses. I just realized one of the roses on my list that I really want and haven’t purchased because I know it can be lanky would really benefit from that! So now I have an excuse to buy another rose and clematis :) I almost ordered huldine multiple times but I wasn’t sure if the cool pink veining would look good with peachy Abraham Darby. Seeing your pictures I think that’s what I’m going to get! How tall does blue angel grow? Do these do pretty well in dry heat? Now that I’ve learned there are so many more clematis I will definitely be finding room for more....See MorePlumeria Girl (Florida ,9b)
