Do I want 'Abraham Darby'?
Comments (12)I'm leaning a bit away from Abraham Darby at this point. If I can grow Constance Spry as a climber here (I had read in the north it would be more a shrub than a climber)- I have the perfect spot for her. I've never dealt with rust before but have come toe to toe with blackspot...and lost. I guess my main problem is that I don't really have the perfect spot for it. The areas where that size rose would go are a little less than ideal (one's in a back corner kind of hidden away and the other gets a little less than ideal sun and is where our snow from the driveway gets piled near). I may have just talked myself out of it....See MoreAbraham Darby, English Garden or Others
Comments (14)I just got my Abe Darby this year as a Jackson Perkins rose from my local nursery. It's been doing great for me. I spray now, but before I started spraying, it never had the faintest bit of problems with blackspot/mildew/etc. I simply spray it now, because I spray everything just because I can. I think a lot of it, is just making sure you have Abe adequately fertilized to prevent disease. I grow my Abe Darby in a 20" container and have had no disease and it has been quite vigorous in growth and blooms. It is one of my most constant bloomers and the blooms last longer than most Austins since Abe Darby's parents are both hybrid teas to my knowledge. Beautiful super fruity scent, and the blooms......for me at least.....stay in a semi-globular manner with an apricot color and a pink hue to it....See MoreAbraham Darby
Comments (14)Thank you everyone. bodica - today seems a bit calmer but they are expecting more winds later in the week. you know the funny thing is we keep running into Ladybugs everywhere. We were at the beach this weekend and there were Ladybugs all over the sand! My little one's kept picking them up and putting them on the plants around so they would not get swept away - these were nice big fat ladybugs too! Then my daughter said that they have ladybugs in their play ground and that the kids were playing with them, she was trying to get them to leave the ladybugs alone "cos they are good for our plants" - lol - she's a good gardener that one - and only 5. I also spot a lot of them on our walks at the park - but they don't really seem to make it out here in the numbers that we find else where - bummer! Thanks Carla & Judy. Judy I have a love hate relationship with this rose like Kathy. It's been quite small for me for the past 3 years, but the blooms are so stunning that I keep it, I am hoping it will do better this year. Kathy - I know exactly what you mean. I feel the same way about him. We'll see how he does this year. I might try and get him own root and see if it does better. Leslie - he's a big nodder, the blooms are so huge that his skinny neck can't hold up :o) - I just hate aphids! We got two bags of Ladybugs, some stayed and some left - oh well, that's how it goes! Jean - ouch, that sounds horrible! Don't you just take it so personally when things start attacking your roses? I do get so worked up over that and curse and cuss at the critters! lol DH thinks I've lost my mind. He's most probably correct! April, you should give it a chance. I think he takes a while to settle. The blooms are just so beautiful that I forgive him most transgressions. My main problem is that he does not repeat as well and that basically for the past 3 years has grown maybe 1 inch with no new shoots. We are hoping for some progress this year. Pauline - thank you. I can't imagine having to wait that long for blooms. But your garden is such a dream that I think it's well worth the wait. Wendy - sure come on over :o) Thanks Karima. You will love this rose. Comments (19)Don't cha know it boxo! Love it!! Hey teka, I'm thinking it does seem to start out more pink and some turn apricot and others stay pink but I think its more pink than apricot. Its absolutely gorgeous in every stage but they are turning out to be monsters. I've got to figure out how to train it up my gazebo legs and still look graceful. It does have some nodding blooms but just as many if not more not nodding. I'm not sure how big it will get but right now these that i've had since April are a good five feet wide and some canes i'be let go so I can start training some up the gazebo legs. Once you move to Athens you have got to check out McCorkles Plant Sale. Its in Dearing Ga and they have two huge plant sales open to the public and you can get some awesome deals. Since you will bill be starting from scratch its a great place to help save some moolah. Its always fathers day weekend and a weekend in September....See MoreAng NC_7B
