That is one amazing DIY. You guys are so clever and creative! That soapstone is killing me -- I'm trying to touch that incredible vein through my monitor. Now I have to ask -- what is on the other side of the kitchen, beyond your angled wall and little table-n-chairs set? It looks like more chairs. What's that room, if I may ask? I love your trash can in your island. I love all of the clever ways you added space...the soap pullout, the angled tray cabinet, etc. Brilliant! Congrats -- enjoy it!

I began salvaging the old double-hungs from our 1913 house we sold to a builder -- he gave me 7 days to get everything out I wanted and was amazed that I pluck so much: all the doors, windows, stair rail, cabinets, even the lovely trim around all the doors and windows. I used them to rebuild a house on our ranch in Texas. Fortunately I had a skilled carpenter who built the house around the salvage material. The next house he built required more windows, which I found through a demolition company who called me whenever they had a house with windows in good condition. Great way to harvest shiplap as well. We're in the process of building again, and this time my "picker" got windows that need work, so I sent them to a carpenter who is framing them so the crew can just slip them in like a store bought. The key is to get the entire window out, in the frame, and don't forget the weights! You'll save a lot of money if you don't have to build the frame and all the mechanisms of the weighted window. My attempts to deal with the vinyl replacment contractors has FAILED -- they simply refuse to take the time to pull the window out in the frame, like the pictures show above, they leave the frame and rip up the sashes as they pull them out. Crazy!!! I offer them good money, too. Fortunately we live in a neighborhood where anything pre-1940 is being bulldozed and replaced by McMansions. That's the best place to hunt.

Hi poodledoodle ~ Well if I will be satisfied is yet to see. We will be having our painting done right around Thanksgiving. I have done some praying that I havenÂt made any mistakes. It has been a difficult process because we are doing it from out of state and I have not even seen the house with sheetrock yet. Since we have almond colored windows I felt we needed a neutral trim and that any of the "whites" would not be dark enough. Since some rooms donÂt have a lot of natural light I hope the SW macadamia will appear more with yellow undertones than green. Still, if they are on the green side I am okay with that because I love almost every shade of green. I would much rather it go yellow or green than pink. The SW Canvas Tan is an older color and it is being used in one of my DHÂs projects. It is kind of the same as Kilm Beige but a little lighter and doesnÂt have the pink undertones. The decorator used Canvas Tan for ceilings with Macadamia and Camelback walls. I wanted some sort of color on the ceiling so I went with that since a pro had picked it out already. She also used SW Whole Wheat semi-gloss for the trim throughout the common areas. Looking at the strip Whole Wheat is dark to me, and I would have never imagined using it for trim. However, to see it, it is absolutely beautiful! What really shocked me was how much lighter it was in a semi-gloss compared to the strip. Still a bit too gold/yellow for our look though, so I went with the lighter Softer Tan and also itÂs on the same strip as the wall color. I would say our style is probably contemporary, but we do like to throw in some antiques. We are hoping to achieve a neutral look that will suit about any color.

I always reccomend to replace these windows with a vinyl replacement window, not to mention 95% of the customers want the same because they don't want to spend money to fix old rusted frames or restore old deteriorated wood frames and after spending all this money to fix, they still have an old window which will required maintanance. Replacement windows come in any size with insulated glass with screen, can be a hopper, sliding or double hung depending on the size of the unit, etc.
