Comments (12)major (complete redesign) - taking down 2 walls, 1 load bearing, modifying patio slider to 1 patio french, replacing casement window, new floors and refinish LR and DR and stairs, colonnade in entryway, new cabinets and ss ct, new fridge. House is 40 years old. Approx dimensions 10.5x ~10 (~12' on one side, Planning/designing ~3 years - I started prepping DH 3 years ago, it took him that long to get used to the idea. I got my first plan back from a Friend's Lumber kitchen design in 8/08. It took me another attempt (at HD this time) and 5 months to come up with a design that I could live with. I already had a good idea of the cabinet style, color, and wood and CT, floors, etc. - that was the easy part! It was the floor plan that was the hard part of the design. I wasn't replacing any appliance except fridge, and I knew I wanted CD, FD (but that was hard to decide on which one). Ok, we are in the middle of it right now, so I don't have the times for the rest, but I can tell you what has been done and the plan for the rest - we'll see how close we are. You said from when you spent your first $500 or more: 5/15/09 - gave deposit on cabinets, I believe order was placed on 5/18. Several days later, received cabinet due date of 6/24. 6/11/09 - Demo begins - kitchen gutted (left sink, dw, fridge, and range for the weekend), and one wall removed - started anchor for load-bearing wall.(first check to GC) 6/12/09 - removed the rest of load bearing wall and finished supports. 6/15/09 - advance plumbing to remove sink cab, removed floor and got ready for electrical. I now only have a sink and a fridge. 6/16/09 - remove walls for colonnade, rough electrical 6/17/09 - rough electrical 6/18/09 - blue board ceilings 6/19/09 - complete blue boarding ceilings and walls (2nd check) Plans for the next few weeks: 6/22/09 - plasterers 6/23/09 - drying 6/24/09 - floor 6/25/09 - 6/29/09 - install cabinets (no weekend) 6/30/09 - templating for CT 7/1/09 - install bb CT 7/2/09 - finish electrical 7/6/09 - finish electrical 7/7 -9/09 - floors 7/10/09 - install countertops (note: I am on vacation from 6/27 - 7/11, so I am not as concerned that we still do not have a kitchen) 7/13/09 - install fridge, dw, disp., heat, gas, etc. 7/14/09 - hardware 7/15 - 17/09 - miscellaneous There's some other tasks that haven't been accouted for that I assume will be done in between other tasks or as they are waiting on something else, like: -switching my mud room door to swing to the right instead of left. -installing patio door and casement window - door is not due in until 6/30 at earliest, and window is a week later. -finishing colonnades -priming You might notice that we aren't having a backsplash. I am hoping for 7/17, but I wouldn't be surprised at 7/24 at all, but that's 6 weeks (from demo) with a holiday in there, so that's pretty good. Comments (17)Putting your refrigerator against an outside wall with the entry door opening against it will not only bang up your refrigerator but could also make it difficult for you to open your refrigerator doors entirely in order to remove the shelves and/or veggie drawers for a thorough cleaning if your refrigerator hinge were to be on the left. What is outside that exterior door -- any chance it is a porch or deck and you could change the hinged door for a sliding glass one? If you know you will have a double door refrigerator, and since you could clean shelves without removing them, the remaining concern would be if you were planning to put a wall on the right side of the refrigerator. Wouldn't; just leave the side of the refrigerator show between the countertop and overhead cabinet and set your refrigerator far enough out so the cabinets don't interfere with opening the refrigerator door all the way. Consider moving your wall ovens to the right: have the wall to the right of your wall ovens be even with the opening to the right of it so that you can put a wider countertop between the cooking surface and the ovens. You need space to set a large heavy pot on both sides of any cooktop. Is the dining area within this kitchen your only dining area? If not, you might well consider other alternatives in lieu of both an island and a table -- you could create one very long island ... ... but only put base cabinets in the one end of it nearest the sink; ... or put base cabinets only on each end and put your beverage fridge on one end and other storage in the other end; ... or you could put your base cabinets and beverage fridge only in the middle with a "pedestal" table in the "dining" end of the kitchen and, perhaps, a "desk" end or a pedestal for seating for two nearer to the sink. http://xlian.me/the-most-attractive-bar-height-kitchen-table-island-home-decor/kitchen-island-ideas-breakfast-bar-kitchen-island-spectacular-in-bar-height-kitchen-table-island-prepare/ You can keep the island countertop a rectangle the same width for its entire length and/or have it widen beyond the double ovens and still have room for your six chairs. In a smaller kitchen, if at all possible, round the four corners of any rectangular island....See MoreKitchen remodel
Comments (1)I'm not a pro, but no one responded, so I'll give you my opinion. Creamy is a warm-ish color, which I think would look really nice with Taj Mahal, especially if it's the kind that has the warm tones. I would stick to warm tones, if it were me. I'm not super familiar with the colors you mention, but a quick google makes me think they're pretty dark... and you have the dark floors already... Are you sure that's the direction you want to go? I would suggest obtaining posterboard colored with those paint colors. I think the company that does this is called "Samplize". I would probably just go and buy a small can of the paint, maybe in those little jars, and paint a large posterboard, or 3' x 3' piece of wood/drywall myself. Then you can haul it around with you, look at it in different lights, etc. The bigger the sample, the better. You'll get a good feel for it then. Finally, and this is totally, 100% my own opinion, but I wouldn't do a "glaze" on a kitchen remodel in 2021. If that's what you love, that's really important, of course, but it surely isn't done much these days. A lot of people think the cabs then look dirty.......See MoreKitchen Remodel Insight/Advice
Comments (4)We are at the end of our kitchen remodel. You need to have the electrical and plumbing done before the drywall. If your going to change the layout of the kitchen like add an island and put a prep sink in then run the plumbing now. I do wish we had put our floor down first only because we tore down walls and removed the existing tile then had cabinets built in. I feel like the floor is uneven under my cabinets but they are all level. Panneled appliances look nice. I wish i had known how small a pull out trash can is luckily it turned out ok instead of the 2 cans im doing 1 10 gal. I had to make the pull out smaller at the last minute. Research and look at many pictures of what your wanting in your kitchen like vent hoods, sinks, cabinet pulls, faucets. And order early due to shortages....See MoreHal Braswell Consulting
