Kitchen Remodel Insight/Advice

Christina A

Hi there! I purchased a pre-construction home which will be built later this year. We are currently in the design process with the builder. Due to many limitations of the builder’s cabinet supplier, we have decided to install the standard kitchen and to deconstruct it after close. Unfortunately, the builder must install the standard kitchen. We will donate/sell the cabinets, or eventually repurpose for our basement.

So far we have met/received quotes from three contractors.

  • We saw their showrooms in person and have looked at photos of their projects
  • They explained their timelines from start to finish (design, production, installation). We discussed potential delays due to the nature of preconstruction homes, and made it clear we need flexibility
  • We read reviews for each company and may also request references
  • We discussed warranty and payment structure
  • We asked if they are a one-stop shop for plumbing, electrical work and countertops. As expected, most do not complete this work in-house but can recommend preferred vendors (we can also use our own trades) and they will coordinate directly with them.

For those who have completed kitchen remodels may I please ask for your insight and advice?

  • What do you wish you had known before starting the process?
  • What do you wish you had done differently?
  • What would you highly recommend for your dream kitchen?
  • What are your thoughts on built-in/panelled appliances
  • Is it easy to install water lines and complete electrical work after the drywall is up? Our basement will be unfinished.

Many thanks!!
