Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Which island pendants will go best with this light fixture?

Hi everyone,

We have a new house and I am dying to get my light fixtures installed, but am having an incredibly difficult time finding pendant lights that are, a.) the right size, b.) something we like and c.) coordinate with the light fixture we love for above the kitchen table (pictures below).

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

How big is your island? Lets say that you have a 5' island. A good tip to follow is to space your lights about 28" to 30" apart. If you chose a 9" or smaller pendant (like below), I would have only 2 pendants over your island. The bronze finishes on these pendents will go well with your Orb chandelier. Good luck!

Let me ask you this first - does the island extend out further than the ceiling where the pendant lights will be hanging or is the photo taken from a weird angle?

The pendant for the kitchen table looks to be a bit small. I would want a 6-light fixture. What is the diameter of that one?

You can find recommendations for anything from 24'' to 40'' from the island, to 68-72'' from the floor, but it really depends on a few things. How high is the island, how wide is the pendant, how wide is the island, how tall are you, and what do you use the island for? You need to keep the pendant out of the way of your tallest cook while s/he is using the island, particularly for tasks like rolling dough which involves leaning forward. You also need to consider the shape of the pendant and the size of the area it will light, to avoid dark spots. Do you need the pendants high enough to avoid obstructing your view into an adjacent room? Better to figure out your own requirements rather than go by someone's set numbers.

Depends on the room the chandy is in. In a more contemporary home, I'd probably use the white sleeves. Nothing to really keep clean. Dust the chandy once in a while. If you want to actually wash the sleeves, you just remove the bulb and slip the sleeve off and wash them. I have a small chandy like that in my kitchen, which was there when I bought the house. It has the white sleeves. I should change them to the honey, not that I think about it! The dining room chandy I have from Ace Iron doesn't have any sleeves (it's a ring-style chandy, so no pillars/sleeves for the bulbs). OP's house is a 1900s farmhouse, so I'd def. go with the honey or antique if that were my house.

Great looking kitchen space! Are those pendents about 12" wide? if so you would want to hang the pendents about 26" apart from each other and about 30" to 36" above the top of the island. A chandelier like the one JudyG posted Is the right style!! It has soft curves and simple that will help complement the pendents. I would not do anything too boxy. For a 42" round dining table, I would do a chandelier that is 22" to 28" wide, and would hang it about 30" to 32" above the table. Here are a couple of styles and sizes. Good luck! Sara Sitardites - yes it hangs out further than the pendant lights will be hanging

Chispa - I believe it is 24in in width, here is a lovely picture of my husband trying to show me what it would look like hanging, haha

That looks to be a seven foot island, an awkward ceiling, off center sink. I would do an ISLAND light from a single centered box. Around 36 inches wide, and in keeping with the table light......flavor.

Seldens Furniture - love the look of bronze with the chandelier! I only have hard wiring for two pendants, so that's perfect! :)

Beth H - I love the edit! I think I would like them even more if they had bronze finish, but I am sure they have that somewhere in this world! Thank you SO much!

JAN MOYER - thanks for the input! The home has two spots for pendant lights so I am afraid just one light won't necessary work, but definitely a really unique idea!

over the table. on the island I would do 3 smaller ones that are the same.

I would do something like this if you want it to match/look similar. These are a little bit smaller than the one over the table I believe

I think to come TOO close to a match of dining fixture can end like a tried and missed If you want globe, the barest acknowledgement of the iron finish is all you need .

Truth be known? The kitchen isn't all that farm or rustic. I might have stayed in satin nickel or even just a blackened iron ... or burnished brass. :)

I agree JAN MOYER I definitely don’t want to get too matchy. Do you have any image suggestions of what you would have done for over the kitchen table and the island? I don’t have anything installed just yet, the more opinions the better!
