Round headed apple borer control options
Comments (8)Thanks, I will look into lorsban. Is this the only option or just the most preffered/effective?In reading MrsG thread on borers it sounded like this may not be available to hobyists. My reasons for organic are many....some more rational than others. Certainly whats on the fruit is near the top of the list, but also longevity in the environment, as well as what it breaks down into, and effect on non-target species....after those it gets more philosophical "touchy feely" But despite how it might sound on another current thread, I don't live in terror of synthetics. I just want to start from the most benign options and work my way up until I find a balance that works. I have read up on their life cycle and time my present methods of slurry and inspection accordingly but here I am... So far I have never seen injury above 6" from soil line. The larva have always been found within 3" of soil line. And the 1 exit hole I have seen (apparently I am effective at getting them at larval stage) was just a bit higher. I have not had them on the pears yet, but I have far fewer of those....See Morepeach tree borer
Comments (8)I developed the following method which works fairly well. The borers usually enter the tree just under the soil surface and up to about 12 inches on the trunk. I take old tee shirts (or any type of stretchy cotton material), cut them in 3" strips and wrap the strips around the base of a tree overlapping them, digging away soil at the trunk base to a depth of several inches. Then, using a tongue depressor I heavily coat the stripping with Tangle-Foot. This traps and catches the moths when they fly in to lay eggs. Do not apply Tangle-Foot directly onto the tree trunk. This treatment is good for several years before it has to be replaced and does not harm the tree. You will probably have to order Tangle-Foot on line from their website. Very nice, helpful company. They also have developed a spray-on type, but order the original, thick, gooey product and wear rubber gloves when using it as it is impossible to clean off your hands. To deal with your immediate problem try the following old time method. Heat a thin piece of wire with a lighter and quickly insert the hot wire into a borer hole, holding it there for a few seconds. Repeat, treating as many borer holes as you can find. Remember, some of those holes are just under the soil surface and you will need to scrape soil away from the trunk....See MoreAre borers a death sentence?
Comments (12)I had an arborist come out and the bark is damaged further up than I remembered from last fall. The tree is not going to get any better. I am having it removed in March, well it is almost March now. Toronado it would catch the roof if it fell in one direction as apposed to 3 other directions. I am waiting til payday because I have to pay half. They are going to cut up in big peices and we get rid of the wood ourselves. They want over $1,000 to cut and remove. We can surely get rid of the wood. People may use it to supplement with good firewood. If anyone knows will the wood burn okay for a fireplace or wood burner? I know some wood sparks and can be dangerous in an open fireplace. His price for cutting it down was average, and they're insured. The company has been in business for 30 years, he said they haven't kept up their ISA certification, but were certified for years. They are charging $ 450.00 to cut it down. I have other estimates around the same price or higher. I can tell myself the tree is beyond help. You can srape off bark about 2 feet up with no effort. So it's a goner. I have my Compton's oak in the ground already to replace it. Thanks for the input everyone....See MorePlaying Catch Up
Comments (22)~TJ, the chins are rodents. They are closer to a bunny or guinea pig. They have to be supervised at all times, when out of the cage. My hubby built them a nice big cage with a lot of shelves for them to climb on & they have a wheel for exercise. ~Kym, your first blooms will be so exciting! Can't wait to see your pix. !Kylie, I'm so glad you like the Crossandra. It's such a pretty orange, isn't it? My iochroma you sent is doing well now. I'm convinced, they are touchy when you change their conditions. All the buds and leaves fell off, but now is leafing out at the bottom. The iochroma I air-layered, looked terrible after I potted it up & brought it inside, now it looks great! You can see it in the pic above of my plant bench on the right hand side of the picture. ~Daniella, I did check the website out.I'm confused too. I'm pretty sure it is a Xmas Cactus not a Thanksgiving C. I read conflicting reports that both kinds are one in the same.Have to do a lot more research. ~Lenette, I am in love this year with the Xmas cactus. Such a bright color. It so nice to have something blooming inside. I want to get more colors too! Theresa...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
