Round headed apple borer control options

I am getting pretty frustrated with these little buggers.

I seem to lose or have severe damage to 1-2 trees each year. Usually right about as they come into bearing which adds to the frustration.

I have been doing the trunks painted in slurry. I am not convinced that it helps deter them, but it certainly makes spotting them easier.

Unfortunately, even with regular checks when I do find them it is usually 5-7 larva. By time I chase/dig them out of a 2-3" caliper tree it is darn near girdled. Some bounce back some don't, and this is what I get catching them early....

We have been maintaining organic methods, but this pest has me ready to try some alternatives.

I would be grateful for input (or direction to a good info source) from folks in the Northeast on what they are doing to manage the pest.
