I don't know what the rule is on this, but we put our 4" cans with the edge closest to the cabinet over the edge of the counter. That way, they shine right in front of you when you are standing at the counter. A 6" would get pushed back farther if you use the edge. Stand at a counter where you would work comfortably and look up. My thought is that you want the center of the light just in front of you and hitting the counter in front of the upper cabinets. To close and they wash the cabinet more than light your work space and too far back, the center of the light will hit your head rather than toe work area. Make sense?

I used the Ecosmart 4 in LED also. Best price I could find last month was $159/4 on HD online. The 6 in ones you can get for $27 in store, but 4 in hasn't seen that drop yet, unless it was very recent. I got my cans from a local lighting store where I bought a few lights. They gave me contractor pricing. I think because I was buying 10 and a bunch of other stuff. I stopped in a few times and they were super helpful. I ended up with a mixed lot of some Quarum and some Quoizel. They were under $15 each. The Quoizel were much easier to work with going in, the guys noticed a definite difference in ease of adjusting and the screw system was easier than the Quorum nail system. Haven't had any of the lights installed yet, but hopefully the end of next week. They just put up the new ceiling drywall today.

Congratulations on the new condo! While recessed lighting looks sleeker than track lighting, I don't see any urgency in replacing the track lighting since you have other remodeling priorities (unless you really, really hate it). Unless this is a flip and you need to please some buyer in the near future, replacing the track could easily wait for a year or two. If the track only bothers you a little, you could look at keeping the track but replacing the track heads. There are only really three types of tracks, so once you figure out which standard yours is, you can buy heads that work on it, with a different look and maybe a different beam angle (I see "hot spots" on the cabinets from the current heads). Do you expect to sit at the counter a lot, or only occasionally? Backless stools generally aren't as comfortable as ones with back support. I love the look of the ones you chose, though.

We're trying to figure out where to place and how to space our 4" LED cut-in recessed lights (750 lumens each): The kitchen has lowish ceilings (8 ft) so we don't want it looking too much like swiss cheese since it's somewhat in your upper eye line. However, we obviously want it functional. Our understanding is that the 'sweet spot' for placement of recessed lights is over the countertop edge so we tried to maintain that. We also have two pendants (Rejuvenation 18" Butte) split over a long island/peninsula (a little over 9.5 feet) Here are some renders so you can better visualize the space: What are your thoughts? Would you make any alternate suggestions? One thing we want to work around is the range hood. The range hood insert is fairly deep, so in effect it will come out nearly to countertop depth, which is why we didn't want to place a light centered over range (since it would basically just be shining on the front face of the range hood and nothing else. Also note, we are planning undercabinet lighting on the two wall cabinets that sit on either side of the range to provide some additional task lighting to those countertops. Thanks for your input!
