Awww! I sure hope your crew likes Smokey. He looks so sweet with those ears that remind me of a floppy eared rabbit.

OH. MY. GOD. Smokey is what life’s all about. (I once had a dog named Smokey, btw.)

If your crew doesn’t like him, maybe you need a new crew! Just kidding...sort of. ;)

Have you read up on how to introduce them? My youngest volunteers with rescue groups and fosters dogs.

Our rescue had and still has many issues and we never got to the point of socializing him.

Here is what we do when DD visits with her fosters. The humans involved go outside and meet the dog first. Pet and hug him basically get his scent on YOU. The dog stays outside while you go back in and let your dog smell you. (Not sure if your crew includes cats, we don't have cats.)

Bring your dog outside on a leash. Of course, other dog is on a leash. Never have one on, one off. Let them sniff etc. Even if there is aggressive behavior, you can separate them and try again.

DD brought a cute beagle mix to visit overnight. By the next day, they could be next to each other. Mine will probably never be able to play, but it is huge that he can be next to different dogs and not be anxious.

I've heard that one of you should take the new dog to a park or someplace, and the other take your dog. Have them run and play and get to know one another, and then bring the new friend home.

What a sweetie....can't believe an owner would just drop him off at the pound. Rotten human being in my book. You (and Smokey) are lucky. Hug him for me. :)

He is beautiful. I sure hope he works out. I had looked for a Basset puppy for 2 yrs before I finally settled on a Beagle. I just couldnt find a Basset Pup that I could afford. They are very pricey now. My two old Bassets had passed away, one in 2009 and one in 2014. Poor old guy. A lot of trauma to go through at 10 yrs old.

Wonder why he was turned in to the pound, poor fellow. There may be a good reason which i hope is the case. Terilyn, you are perfect for Smokey......hope your crew agrees.

How very kind of you to be willing to take in the old fellow. I hope your other dogs will accept him. I think the key to that is to go slow and let them come to terms more or less on their own. The thing about dogs, they can be very jealous.

For people wondering why a senior dog ends up at the shelter, many times there is no legit reason and they just get dumped. Pets are often dumped in the summer because people want to go on vacation but don't want to pay a pet sitter. But frequently, it's because the owner died or went into assisted living. All pet owners should have a plan for their pets! If you are reading this, think about which friends or family members could be counted on to take care of your beloved pets and have a chat with them. I have worked in rescue and you would be amazed at how often family members will have a pet euthanized after the owner is gone, dump it at a shelter, give it to the first taker, or just put it outside to fend for itself. It's mind boggling.

Marilyn, dogs can be very jealous. My Little Lil still hasn't accepted Rosy. I doubt she ever will.

Bluebell, wow. People like that certainly do not love their pets. Those aren't beloved pets.

Almost every animal we have had over the many years have been rescues. We’re well versed in how to introduce a new member. Thank you for all of the advice though! I’m only worried about Bella, our shelter corgi mix.
