It's an ad pop-up that's easily removed. My search (which you could also have done) suggests that MacKeeper is a real, legit product that uses an annoying and unwelcome marketing approach (the pop up) that scares some and misinforms others.

If you're still covered by AppleCare, contact them.

Otherwise, do a search for" Remove MacKeeper popup " and you'll find the solution.

Sorry if I wasted your time describing something you'd already found yourself, you might have said something instead of making it a game. The words in your comment didn't suggest you understood. For those that think I'm being harsh, Elmer is well known as an egotistical contrarian who continually attempts to make people feel inferior and never misses an opportunity to slap someone. Serious insecurity issues.

Suzie, I think you're overreacting a bit here. Elmer I don't believe was trying to patronize you, but like myself, always tries to help people find the solution themselves rather than have to rely on others to do it for them. I do this for my mother in law all the time who saves up questions for me when she sees me, rather than doing a quick google search which I'm finally getting to her. I don't mind at all helping her, but I'm not the only resource for help. The ol' "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" thing.

Looking at your original post, had you mentioned, "I searched myself and this is what I can find, do any of you have any different experience".... yada yada yada would have went a long way with Elmer adjusting his response. But instead you don't mention it and make us assume you don't know any better. Help us help you.

I don't always agree with Elmer, but remember he doesn't get paid to answer here and help you. And if you turn around and accuse those genuinely trying to help you for patronizing you, they'll stop helping people, and you won't have this resource for help. Please consider that. Take a step back before biting the hands that feed you.

You’re not wrong and I appreciate the correction. I know Elmer well from another board and most of us there are sensitized to his efforts at superiority and his personality. Hence, my reaction to him.

As Steve J suggests, there are some on forums who honestly seek and appreciate when others can help. And others who lash out and make comments that make the helpers scratch their head and think "why did I waste my time trying to help X". Apparently I did waste my time trying to help you.

I know I'm not alone in keeping a casual mental list of such folks. When I see them, I leave their questions to the remaining others who haven't yet been insulted by such people. What goes around, comes around.

Also maybe emailing the software maker with your problem might have gotten some help, certainly couldn't hurt. I have found a lot of times the software maker might have help forums on their site for their products or there are internet forums for the product. I Google to find that stuff out and go from there. Interesting the stuff I saw googling mackeeper pop ups. Mary
