WOW..am I ever slow now

My computer has gone from being slow to almost stop working..

First here is what I know about my computer: windows XP Media center Edition AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+

2.21GHz 960MB of ram

Physical address extention Acer

300 GB harddrive

This page too over 10 minutes to load & still isn't 100% loaded. It isn't just GW it is everywhere.

I scanned with MalWareBytes & SuperAntiSpyWare & it shows I am clean. I have ZoneAlarm & Avast. I did a defrag last nite & I have 23% free on C drive.I have rebooted. I just don't know what else to do. I have cable.

Any idea what else I can do. This happened all of a sudden. A reboot has been very slow since a update on FireFox about a year ago but now it is just impossible to do anything much. Please does anyone have any idea what I can do short of formating it? I am about desperate.

how long has it been since you opened the case and cleaned out the dust bunnies? heat from dust can cause slowness issues.

If you think something firefox related is the cause you can always remove firefox and do a re-install, you can try running firefox safe mode, start> all programs> mozilla then choose start firefox safemode, this will disable all add-ons to see if an add on can be the issue.

I had to leave for awhile & on returning it seems to be running better.. I may do what U said about FireFox but not tonite. That is when things went wrong like taking forever to reboot. As for cleaning I'll have to carry it to the shop. I have no idea how to even open it.

I sure wish when I had this hard drive partitioned I had given drive C more room. I know it is too late now to do anything about that.
At least for now it is loading pages better

The biggest issue is fungus gnats. Tiny black flies that love to live indoors or out and infest every single plant even if its in a pot. They are smaller than fruit flies. Outdoors, I use a form of Bt and also benefical nematodes as I used to get a LOT of these fungus gnats, they even get inside the leaf layers of brussles sprouts, which are not good eating when you see tiny back flies in the cooking water. Indoors, when I start seeds, I use a mix of seed starting soils, like Natural Beginnings from Gardens Alive, as well as a Jiffy mix that is sold by the bag through sevral web sites, and even shreaded coconut husk fibers called coir. These are all quite 'clean' and have little to no real soil in them. They help hold just the right amount of moisture too. The fungus gnats usually come from outdoor soils, lay eggs in the soil that turn into tiny maggots and these feed off the tender roots of any plants. Thats one reason you see house plants suddenly dieing for no apparent reason. To check indoor plants, I use yellow sticky traps that rest horizontally on the edges of the pots. After just a couple of days, these traps can become loaded with tiny black gnats! Outside is where I use a form of Bt and also water in the beneficial nematodes that live in soil and go after the fungus maggots. My garden soil here isn't perfect, but if I can reduce harmful bugs from killing plants, its a big help. I use scent lures and sticky traps for my apples, peaches, and even cucumbers. Each sticky trap has a scent lure that attracts the pests common to these plants. Some plants and trees are highly resistant to diseases and bugs. Asian pears, asparagus, and blueberries to name a few. It may be better to head to a nursery/garden shop, as Home Depot and Lowes tend to offer a very limited amount of organic supplies. Here, we have only a very few products that are organic and most are for bugs (Neem) and disease control (Serende). The bags of soil offered by Miracle Grow tend to be a bit harsh as they simply use chemical equivilents to the real soil nutrients. I have a small leanto shed that stores corn gluten, fish meal, humate, kelp meal, and a few others. I use these as natural nitrogen additives, or in the case of humate, many minerals and micro nutrients. If you do plan to spray for any bugs that might be feeding on the leaves, try Neem. I wouldnt spray any herbs with anything unless the bugs are chewing holes in the leaves however. Bt, is a liquid mixed with water and has several different strains, of which one is for the gnat control. Ever hear of squash vine borers? These bugs bore into the base of squash vines and destroy the insides which cause the plants to quickly die. I have used another form of Bt and actually injected it into the main stems of squash plants, by using an insulin syringe. The Bt attacks the borers and kills them. Imagine a garden thats a living thing like us, it just can't survive all by itself if you want good yields and quality crops. I have only 2000 sq. feet of garden space, and there is also areas all around the edges of my garden that have fruit trees, or some permanent plants like asparagus and horse radish, which I harvest every spring. For your pot of cilantro, add some seeds every 2-3 weeks, so they can give you more than 1 or 2 harvests. Only thing is, if they are clumped together, they are hard to seperate if there are two stages of growth within each other. Indoors, I start about 60 petunia plants, 60 or so impatien plants, peppers, tomatos, basil, and a few others about mid April. This year, seedless watermelons with a necessary pollinator, as well as a few cantaloupe types. Brussels sprouts again too, but will be covered with a light weight white plastic fabric to block out the bugs, then my big batch of corn, which I plant every other year. Susan, Owbist is great, knowledgeable, and always helpful, so please don't take my response as disputing his obliging and useful advice to you. I have no doubt there is a memory issue that correcting will prove beneficial. What you describe sounds like an overloaded cache directory. This may also be referred to by some programs as the program's scratchpad (or whatever Photoshop Elements calls it). Any program that works with graphics (most programs, actually, whether they work with graphics or not, especially Word), utilizes this area for temporary storage used by your computer's memory. Everything you do in PE creates these temp files, which are an integral part of forming/creating/modifying while in the program. Just opening a graphic in PE prompts the program to automatically generate these cache/scratch/temp files to help it remember the graphic and everything you do to it (such as lightening, sharpening, applying effects, etc.). In other words, PE is creating and storing copies of the information it needs and makes easily retrievable while you task. It is one reason undo is possible, for example, but has many other uses. The program automatically created this area/directory on your hard drive during installation, and some programs build them more heavily and more rapidly than others. That would depend on the size of these files and how many it builds for each individual graphic. Some build only one, but some build quite a few. I have no idea how many PE creates or how big they are. Additionally, there are other temp files the program may be creating. Even though it's finished with those files and has discarded them to the cache/scratchpad directory or to your Temp directory in Windows, it still accesses them. Or, in the very least, they are sitting there in the way, interferring with the program's functionability (is that a word? LOL). This explains your sudden decrease in efficiency. Therefore, adding memory will certainly help but only for the length of time it takes the cached/scratched files to build beyond RAM's ability to manage - which is what actually just happened. Now, your task is finding its location so you can clean it out and be able to clean it periodically. I'm sorry I cannot help with that because I don't have PE. I do have Photoshop but couldn't find its scratch folder doing a quick look. Once you delete all the *junk* in there, PE will resume normal function at a maximum rate of tasking speed that your amount of memory will accommodate. As Owbist indicated, the more the merrier. :) Start another thread for someone with PE to help you find that folder. Incidentally, clean out your Temp directory. C > Windows > Temp Bet you find a bunch of stuff with a .tmp extension. You will likely find files with other extensions, but I wouldn't touch those. Good luck

As many know, I've had electric roasters for years, actually decades. I had my mother's Kenmore roaster after she died and my sister borrowed it from me and it was never returned once she experienced the versatility of it. Not a big problem though since that was probably a 20 qt unit, used for BIG turkeys, hams, multiple roasts, etc. I bought a 6 qt Nesco and a 4 qt Nesco. I will take issue with anyone who suggests that it's any sort of a one-trick pony. Far from it. People compare them to slow cookers and that's an insult to the roaster. They are a roaster oven. They will slow cook, they will bake, and I know people who have used them to make pancakes for cryin' out loud, but I do not suggest it's the best unit for that. I personally have baked bread in mine many times. Why heat the big oven for one loaf? More heat loss and more expensive to operate the big oven. For slow cooking chili, soup, stew or what have you it's FAR superior to a slow cooker. It's peoples' own choice but there's no way I'd keep a slow cooker and get rid of my Nesco. The Nesco, and I use that term for all roaster ovens, the roaster oven will do everything a slow cooker will and much more and with less hassle. You get precise temperature control, not just high and low. Cleaning is far easier than a slow cooker. As I've said before I got rid of the slow cookers soon after getting the roaster oven. There's no comparison and no use here for a slow cooker dedicated unit. It was great to take to the cabin to supplement the "Coleman" stove and having an oven really expanded the menu. I've used it for hot cider, keeping hot dogs, brats and burgers warm at picnics and outdoor functions. One of these days I'm going to try using it for no-knead bread. For me, the electric roaster replaces the need for a Dutch Oven. For others it's the other way around. A large unit is often used only at holidays. Admittedly that's when my mother's unit was used. But at the same time there was no substitute for it either. The extra oven was required to feed the family and guests. I agree with the basic idea of the 350 "rule" as an assist to declutter and prioritize and Snidley admitted that there's exceptions to it which there has to be. But, even if I only used my roaster once a year, I'd keep it rather than having a blender or food processor. Turkey from a blender isn't the same as from the roaster! :) And clearly rules are made to be broken or a lot of people would be tearing out the second oven they have built into their houses! FWIW I used to use an electric fry pan more often than the stove. Handy, quick to heat up, easy to clean. Coupled with the Nesco I made a very mean pot roast, batch of chili and other things. I use the roaster to steam things. Sweet corn and other vegetables are great. I didn't realize how well it made baked potatoes until I used it in there when I wanted to just make a couple without firing up the big oven. For the 6 qt size, I can't tell you if it would work well for a whole chicken. i don't do whole chickens. I do use it for a large turkey breast and often there's not a lot of room between the meat and the cookwell, but it still cooks just fine. I do use it for maybe a dozen or so chicken drumsticks. I make up a bunch and have for OAWC, snacks, salads and the like. You might try cutting up the chicken and roasting it. That might work well. That said, it should also be stated that it's a TOOL. It's not going to do everything for you. It's there to help you, not unlike a Dutch Oven, a fry pan, a knife or a can opener. You have to make it work for you. Every pet I've had enjoyed the roaster too and they'd generally lie very close to it when the aromas wafted through the house.

Hi Cori Ann - I'm a big proponent of the "mulch and don't wait" school of enriching soil, but I start with decent soil in the first place. It's clay, but loamy clay, so once I can get past the rocks and whatever else was growing instead of roses (like, horrors, a LAWN), I have decent stuff to work with. I do the usual lasagne method over the top of the grass or whatever, since I am wayyyyy too lazy to double dig anything (once at my old house, and never again). When I have a new area I want to turn into a garden, I give myself maybe a day's lead time (but fine if not) to do the following: - lay down cardboard, paper bags and/or newspapers, and cover with organic stuff like leaves, compost, vegetable trimmings, or whatever - usually 3-5" thick at least - Add some cheater topsoil to jumpstart the breakdown process - maybe 1" - top with leaves as top mulch, not necessary to shred if you have something to hold them in place (too much like work) or mulch if you're not cheap like me. A good additional 3" or so of these will break down over the season to enrich the whole bed. - Go ahead and plant where I jolly well want to. Dig a hole through the lasagne layers into the crappy soil, and mix all of the above into the planting hole, chopping vigorously at the vicious little grubs as you find them (good for the soul as well as soil). I always add some extra manure and compost as well as alfalfa when I plant (even in established beds), mixed about 1/3 with the rest regular soil, so this prepares the hole a little extra. - Let the worms do your work for you, to even out the discrepancy between your Cadillac planting hole and Nova rest of the bed. You don't want to create a huge sink if you have super clay soil, where all the water pools in your good hole and rots your rose, so by conditioning the rest of the soil while you plant you get the best of both worlds. Not having to wait, but not really leaving the rest of the bed on its own either. - When some of your roses die (as half of them will in zone 5 for me), plant the new rose in a slightly different spot from the old one to expand the Cadillac-ness of the rest of the bed. - Keep everything mulched with leaves or other organic material indefinitely to keep feeding your soil for a minimum of work, and maximum benefit with minimum wait time. Make those worms WORK for their grub. I've done this dozens of times in soil that you couldn't get a pitchfork into without serious sweat, and ended up mid-season with soil good enough to flip with a hand tool. The copious amounts of organic material mixed in with some real soil does it for me, and I don't fuss with waiting at all. Of course that's my soil and yours may differ. Cynthia

Run this program below so we can see what's running. Unless you got it working.

A very small program that simply lists the processes that Task Manager lists, including the full path name so you can see what program they are part of. You can easily copy and paste the list into a text file for before/after comparisons, or to email/forum when asking for computer help. Copy the list an paste it to the forum. You may be surprised at what is running on your computer! Some processes waste a lot of computer resources and make your computer sluggish.

I do very little off line. The reboot is VERY slow.. 15 or 20 minutes or more. That started with a FireFox update a year or so ago.. I am going to reinstall it maybe tomorrow.. I don't know if that will help or not.

I just called Charter who I have the Internet with & told them my problem. They had me disconnect the motem for about 30 seconds. It seems to have fixed the problem. I sure hope it is fixed at least.
Now if I could just reboot in less than 20 minutes or more
I'd be happy (if nothing else messed up :) I haven't been brave enough to take FireFox off & reinstall yet. I'm afraid I'll lose things. I know my bookmarks are safe & can be reloaded but what about the other things.. I do know it started after a FF update a year or more ago.

When you uninstall firefox it does not uninstall your profile. Your new firefox will have all the bookmarks, extensions, etc. that your old one did.

I don't believe I have ever deleted a browser that I wanted to reinstall.. do I just go into the control panel & remove from there? I sure hope my speed stays fast for the download.

Download it first. Then if it's a newer version than the one you have just install it over the old one. If it's the same version then it may install over the old but may not-I never tried to reinstall the same version. If not remove it using the add/remove utility in the control panel then install the new one.

I don't think Firefox is going to cause or be related to a slow booting computer. Windows does not load or have anything to do with Firefox during reboot / restart. I would be more concerned about the files / programs that windows does load during reboot. It's why I asked for the running processes above, I'd also be concerned about only 23% FREE space an a 300 GIGBYTE hard!!!!

I sure wish I had devoted more of the hard drive to C but didn't.. other than deleting things I guess there isn't much I can do. In the future can I put new downloads on drive D which has loads of room?

I went into Add/delete & there is so much there I have no idea what they are. When I bought this computer I thought I'd never have problems with space.. little did I know :(
I took off almost all of my games as I seldom use them but that didn't help much.
I hope if I want to install something new I can put them on the other drive.

are you making sure to empty the recycle bin because it is not being deleted from your drive till you do that.

when you boot up in safe mode does it boot up a lot faster? or does even safe mode take that long?

Might turn on show hidden files and folders in explorer, the menu.. think its.. tools/folder options.

I often find C root stuffed with pictures, downloads and docs along with tons of crash folders & update uninstallers that slow down xp computers.

I have been trying to clean out Drive C. I had a LOT of pictures & even some zip files & EXE there. They have been moved to drive E. It freed up some space. On drive C I have a total of 61.2 GBs ..38.8 used & 22.8 GBs free.
It booted in 13 minutes (still too slow) instead of about 20 minutes. I remember in Windows 95 I had some EXE on the desktop & they gave me a fit until I discover they were the problem.

Now for a dumb question which I think I know the answer.
Does the mail add to drive C? I have a lot of mail there which includes a TON of pictures of my Great-grand twins who are now 2 years old. I have only seen them once & pictures are all I have. I don't mind deleting most of the mail but what is the best & quickest way to save the pictures? I use Thunderbird 3.1.2 which I don't really like. The only thing I like is I see how to send mail BCC which I could find in the other Thunderbird. I don't remember the version but it was the one before 3.1.2

Raven I was reading back over the answers & realize I didn't answer yours.. Yes, I dumped the recycle bin. I also cleared the temp files. What seems to be the slowest is shutting down. I can't do that in safe mode..

Below are the Zone Alarm files. Zone Alarm is known to cause slow start ups on some machines so it's possible it's causing issue with yours. I would disable Zone Alarm and see if it makes any difference on start up time.

sometimes it depends on which type of email client you use but my guess is that you do probably have a lot of your mail stored on your pc. Keeping things in mail form is not a good idea any way if you find them important. I would save all of those pictures off to DVD's or flash drives or external drives, at the very least set up an online storage for them to get them off the pc and in a safe place. You can use photo album sites or you can use a back up site like Adrive which I use, they give you 50gig of free space which is a lot and you can purchase more.

it is super easy to use. you can move batches of files from your pc to the site for storage.

For the pictures you have in your emails you need to actually save them to pc by right clicking on them and save as and then put them in a folder on your pc, then from that folder you can move them to DVD or online storage etc and then delete the folder and contents. You could set up different folders to do some organizing of the pictures at that time too.

so you have a 300 gig drive but have partitioned it to only have a total of 61.2 GB? If that is the case your other partition can be used to store a lot of that kind of stuff, however of course should you have a drive failure you would lose it no matter which partition it was on so having them saved off the pc is a good idea too.
Why was it partitioned that way and how many partitions are there and what sizes?
I am assuming this is xp? I don't remember.

go into your event viewer and look for red or yellow flags if you see any double click on that entry to get more info, see if you see any that say something about saved users registry because something was still using it, I don't remember the exact wording but that is close. I think you may benefit from running the hive cleanup tool.

give that a shot and see if it helps, as always I suggest creating restore points before installing anything so that should you need to revert you always can.

I don't even know where the event viewer is. I don't know how to creating restore points.
These picture in e-mail are hugh.. I'll have to save them to CD as I'm sure it wouldn't take long to fill up Adrive. It seems I used that years ago.
I'll have to save them one by one which will take a long time as many as there is. My son uses "Simple Mail" & he can save a whole folder..I don't see anyway to do it in Thunderbird 3.1.2

By now U know I don't know a lot about the computer & U folk are my only help. I feel like I hobble around it pretty good for a self taught 74 year old.
This computer was used as it was a better one than I could afford new & had a new warranty on it. I don't really remember but they must have put a new hard drive in it as I remember telling them to put most in drive E. There are 2 partitions C & E. I was making Paint Shop Pro pictures & they take a lot of room. I have hundreds of pix from the pregnancy positive test till now..I have every ultra sound & she had a lot. She Has just started putting a lot of their pictures on facebook so I don't get as many as I did.
The men at the shop should have known I didn't know much about it & advised me to put more on drive C. They didn't so I now have to live with it.

I'm gonna have to wait a few days before I can do anything. I am having cataract surgery in the morning & don't know how long they will tell me to wait before using the computer.
I don't remember how to put on a disk but guess I'll learn again.
I have most of my important information on a flash drive..some on 2 of them in case.

I don't know where that 300 GB hard drive come from but I checked property & I have 63.3 GB on E drive with 22.7 free.
On C drive I have 120 total with 66.5 free.
Still wish I had more on C drive...gotta free up more.

That's good there 66.5 free!!!!!!

So the drive is not causing a slow boot then. See if you can disable Zone Alarm, I gave instructions above. Lets see if we can get it to boot faster.

Zep.. SORRY, I SWITCHED THE DRIVE NAMES ABOVE. Wishful thinking I guess :(
I have 63.3 GB on C drive with 22.7 free.
I will try disabling ZoneAlarm as soon as I can after the surgery in the morning.. I need a clear head to do that.. it is getting late here. It may be a day or 2 before I can do it..I will do as the Doctor says... my eyes are to important.

to see the event viewer you go to control panel then administrative tools then event viewer, there will be some different categories there to click on and view you can look at all of them, you are looking for red or yellow flags, when you see any you just right click or double click on that entry to view the details of the error.

you can just download that little hive tool and run it, that may well help with your slow shut downs.

I am anxious to try all the things that have been told me..a little scared too. I just don't want to get into doing it tonite. I do run & check & see if anything new has been said :)

hopefully the surgery went well and you will be back up and going with better eyesight than before.
