help me decide what to do with all these books!
Comments (32)To answer the question about tax write-offs... Last year, I gave away a lot of stuff. It felt great to declutter my home. And whenever possible, I collected the receipts from any charity that gave them out. They were too busy to actually write the receipt for me. They gave me the blank form, and let me figure out the value, on the honor system. I had the receipts all saved up for the tax accountant. Then my husband convinced me that we couldn't claim them for our taxes. So I shredded them, along with all the other paper clutter I have been shredding. Then the tax accountant said that if we had any receipts from donations to charity, he needed them for our tax return. I had several hundred dollars of donations, by my reckoning. He said we needed to try to reconstruct them,. He sent us a list of prices used by the Salvation Army to estimate the value of donations. I told my husband that there was no way I could remember everything I had given away. I refused to even try. I wanted it to be a lesson to him that if the wife lady puts a donation receipt into the tax folder, he is not to try to convince her to take it back out. Now, it has backfired. I want him to get rid of some of his own stuff ... for example, his old trumpet that he hasn't played since high school. But he refuses to just Freecycle it, even though there was a request for a trumpet just last week, on the local Freecycle list. My hubby wants somebody to tell him exactly how much his trumpet is worth, so he can be sure to get the proper, full value of it as a donation from a place that will actually give him a receipt. So now, there is a huge obstacle to getting it out of the house! Well, we are no worse off than before. The trumpet is still in the basement. And I'm still trying to get him to realize what he needs to receive in order to be willing to get it out of the house. I have yet to make him realize that he has to be willing to do the work to get it out of the house via the method he envisions. Baby steps! Comments (20)You have all been so helpful. I really hope that someday I can post finished pictures of my home. The few photos I've seen of some of your homes look so well though out and put together. Olychick, those pictures really helped me see not only that a taller chair will work, but also helped me see how radically different colors and patterns can coexist. If only I had the vision and confidence to buy such eclectic pieces... Here is the link for the RH rug, I like the cream version. I think it's simplicity is what calls out to me.I'm usually drawn to airy rooms. At the same time I like print-heavy rugs and saturated colors such as the photo in the second link. (sorry for not posting in the thread, I can't figure out how to save photos from houzz on my new mac). I can post a few pictures of my kitchen/living room area if need be, but right now I just have a slate fireplace and that brown chesterfield (credit goes to my H for that one.. his one furniture demand). Floors are a dark wood look tile. White ikea cabinets. Custom aluminum hood. We are planning on building floor to ceiling white built-ins flanking the fireplace. http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1860812&cm_ps=modal_add_to_cart--none--other_items_you_may_like&categoryId=cat1760138 https://www.houzz.com/photos/vanessa-de-vargas-living-room-los-angeles-phvw-vp~31813...See MoreHow long do you give a book before you decide to give up on it?
Comments (23)About 25% of the book. Though there have been occasions when I have enjoyed the book up to the halfway point and something then happens that totally POOFS! the magic feel, and I will fasforward to the ending. This is mainly for closure. If the ending is just horrible I then toss the book, but if it is intriguing, I will go back and skim to the finish. Woodnymph, I have both Hilary Mantel's novels and am having the same problem as you. These are books I should enjoy but somehow I'm missing the bus. I havent given up yet though. Re: Garcia Marquez - I really x3 tried with One Hundred Years of Solitude, but was just baffled. I hated it. It was for book club so I did manage to get through the whole thing but decided that this type of magic realism is not for me. :)...See MoreHow Do You Decide?? What Makes You Swoon??
Comments (22)Many years ago when I first became interested in growing roses, it seemed like a random magazine article or a photograph would get me excited about certain look in roses because no one around here grew anything I was just nuts about. If you are of a "certain age", you might remember the very earliest Victoria magazines of the 80s--those romantic, stunning bouquets and rose arrangements featured in Victoria's photos got me on such a tear for David Austin roses. I hadn't even heard of them before Victoria. Another major change for me happened about ten years ago when I moved to this location in the middle of semi-arid desert hills. I realized I needed strong colors in my roses to stand up to the blazing sun and shimmering hills--plus I had a yellow (light) house. Suddenly, I needed purple and more yellow and lots of it. I still have my pinks and peaches, but purple roses, plus a few yellow ones really get my heart rate going. Here's a pic of The Prince, not a true purple, but what a dark and smoldering look that roses has! Diane...See Morevee_new
