Comments (7)Without running a thorough set of diagnostics on your system, it is hard to point to a specific cause. Several items come to mind: 1. Hard drive failing, Fix: New hard drive 2. The chip set on the motherboard that communicates with the hard drive (and other drives) is failing. The fix: new mother board. 3. A file in the operating system is bugered. Fix: Reinstall the operating system. 4. A virus. Fix: Clean the files using good anti-virus and anti-malware software. The latest review by PC Magazine says that McAfee is good about keeping a clean nachine clean, but is not as good as others for cleaning an infected machine. 5. The "keep alive" battery on the mother board is failing. One symptom of this failure is that clock time displayed after boot-up will in error. This battery also maintains the system settings in the BIOS. These settings get flaky when the battery begins to fail. 6. Power supply is low on some outputs or has developed more ripple than allowable. Your system is like mine. It gets an update by replacing some parts and re-using other assenblies that were working. (A build a box) As a result, the power supply may be several years old and worn out or its output not adquate to handle the inrushes on newer equipment during boot-up. New drives that spin at higher speeds (7200 rpm for example) have greater inrush starting currents than older, slower spin rate drives....See MoreWin 8, Back-up Flash Drive and Scammers
Comments (1)Hi there, off-centre, We got yer back, kid! How good that is, what with our rudimentary level of knowledge, computer-wise (well, somewhat reduced "wise", maybe) may be a matter worthy of some question. Thanks for the info. I had a call purportedly from a windows guy the other day, saying there was something wrong with my computer ... I asked him how he knew, without entering my computer uninvited, and he said they'd noticed there was something wrong ... ... was I at my computer? ... ... he could help me fix it. I told him that I was not at the computer ... ... and that my computer is not attached to the internet, whether by line, tower or satellite. That pretty well ended our conversation. Gonna have to change that, though, I think. ole joyful...See MoreWin. 10 DVD drive won't work,
Comments (3)Very easy to do, both discs look very much alike. The DVD and Blu-Ray on the Front of the Disc is hard to see sometimes, I've got to be wearing my Glasses to be sure! Hope you Good luck with Windows 10. I like it and haven't had any problems with any of my computers or tablets that have the upgrade. I did have a problem with one of my tablets but it wasn't Windows 10, the Touchscreen happened to stop working shortly after the Win 10 upgrade (Not Microsoft's fault)!...See MoreWin 8.1 and 10 compatibility mode?
Comments (5)I called Wordperfect and they are refunding my purchase. Wordperfect Legal can easily do legal documents, that's why...plus, mail merges in Wordperfect are a snap! Plus I don't like Microsoft Office's subscription model, and I already have several copies of Microsoft Office on other devices. I spent about 3 1/2 hours on the phone with Microsoft trying to figure out the font problem without success. They took over the laptop remotely and couldn't figure out the problem either. They rolled me back to Win 8.1 and removed the annoying upgrade reminder. mikie_gw - I tried that but nothing happened. Also, I went online and found instructions for compatibility mode, but the instructions didn't match what I was seeing on my computer. The Microsoft lady had to install a program then do a search to find it. Overall, it seems when the upgrade was installed something wasn't installed or installed right. I checked Open Office but read it hasn't been updated since about 2003. I might try LibreOffice. I read it's an Open Office variant that has current support. I think I have LibreOffice on my phone...Installing LibreOffice will be my next adventure... Thanks for the help. Per Microsoft, Win10 won't play well with Wordperfect......See MoreSteve J
