Problem find iPhone as a drive on Win 10

When I plug the phone into my laptop, it no longer shows up as a drive or device. I can't find it anywhere.

In the past when I plugged the phone into the computer a Windows screen would pop up showing photos on the phone where I could move them to the photo gallery.

Now nothing shows up when plugged in. Honestly, I still have trouble navigating Win 10 but I can find the drives and it does not show the iPhone. It shows my other external drive.

I thought maybe autoplay was shut off, but it is on. Maybe a setting on the phone has been changed but I have no idea where to look.

I can't move any pictures to the computer. When I plug it in to the computer a sound is made then a small window shows Iphone loaded, but when I click it, nothing.

Any ideas?

Give these a shot in order to see if any work for you:

-Try a different USB port on your computer

-Try a different lightning cable, they can be flaky

-Make sure the lightning port on your phone is clear of debris. There's almost always lint in there from your pocket and prevents a good cable insert.

-Last but not least, uninstall iTunes, reboot, and re-install iTunes which will re-load the iPhone drivers.

Tried switching cables with no luck. Tried different USB and nothing.

I do not have iTunes on my computer or phone. Got rid of it last year when I realized I never used it anymore.

But the phone uploaded the photos regularly until last month. I must add that my phone is a replacement. My phone speaker stopped working, I took it to Apple and they couldn't fix it and offered me the same 'refurbished' phone for $300.00. I was not happy, but needed a working phone.

I transferred everything from iCloud to the replacement phone but maybe because I deleted iTunes that is causing the problem?

I used to upload photos to Photobucket but they don't allow you to post any photos on websites anymore unless you sell your house.

Anyone know of a photo hosting site that allows you to post photos on line for free?

Very frustrating.

Thanks for the responses. We have a Win8 sitting on a shelf collecting dust for 2 years. Never use it anymore. We also have 4 XP's and a Win 7. I've used Win 7 (hubbys machine), but prefer XP. I don't know if I'm resistant to change, I like to think I'm not. But I think Win 8 is dumb and would take me a lot of time to navigate it. I've used it. Did not try classic shell. Hate all the icons and not finding the frequently used places hidden. I don't like the disappearing tool bars. I just think its dumb and regret ever buying it. I don't see any reason for MS to change things around which takes precious time to figure out. Things like Add/Remove, various other settings...it all takes time out of your life to play around when you have work to do. You can buy a new car, it might have added extras and new things which take time to learn. But, no matter what car it is, when you open the door, put the key in the ignition, move the transmission to D, it goes. You can drive around and worry about learning the 'extras' later. You can press on the gas pedal and it goes. To have to learn another operating system and where MS decided to hide things, call them by other names is ridiculous. Same with their Office Programs. They are expensive and complicated to use. Yet they change them around ever few weeks. Why? I do a lot of work on my computers. I don't like having to learn all over again when I have things to do. I didn't like Visa at all, but had to deal with it. I kept my XP because I had Office 07 and I could put together a bunch of letters and newsletter quickly. I gave Vista away and went back to XP exclusively. I wonder if Apple changes their Macs every 3 years? Have no idea but am getting tempted to take a look at their computers. That's my rant, sorry if I seem to be the only one who is very upset with Microsoft for all this nonsense. Jane

Yes. Thank you. I was going "in" the wrong door. Going through settings I do see go back to Windows 8.1. I only realized that win 7 was listed because I was in there for another reason and happened to see win 7. I actually do like 10 and so far no problems except one.. and, of course, right now, I can't remember the exact error message, but it is something about a license missing at start up....the license is for something with adk? no, that doesn't look right.... alright, found it through my history AMD Quick Stream error after upgrade to Windows 10- the license information to use this software is not found What does this mean? Honestly It has been so long since I've had any kind of problem that this error message makes me go UGH.... why did i upgrade to 10?? Course, I don't actually know that it is a problem, since i don't even know what it is, what it does, am I missing someting? am I going to have problems because of this message? If not, why the message? Thanks to both of you and I would appreciate any additional help with this if you can

Very easy to do, both discs look very much alike. The DVD and Blu-Ray on the Front of the Disc is hard to see sometimes, I've got to be wearing my Glasses to be sure! Hope you Good luck with Windows 10. I like it and haven't had any problems with any of my computers or tablets that have the upgrade. I did have a problem with one of my tablets but it wasn't Windows 10, the Touchscreen happened to stop working shortly after the Win 10 upgrade (Not Microsoft's fault)!

A simple google of ....iphone pics to win 10...produced this link as the first result: http://www.imore.com/how-transfer-your-iphone-and-ipad-photos-windows-10 and it is dated 11/16/2016 so I'm guessing that the info is current. Other results have older dates so those methods may or may not work. It would be interesting if you could borrow someone's Android phone to see if Win 10 would auto-magically do what you expect. If it worked, my guess would be that the change (if there really was one) was something pushed by Apple, not Microsoft.

iTunes includes the drivers you need for Windows to access it and it may be that the old driver is corrupt. I’sd re-install iTunes and see if that helps you.

Try Google photos or imgur for photo hosting.

I assume you tried rebooting phone and computer. Maybe the refurbished phone is defective. I would let apple deal with it. Google photos doesn't generate any posting codes that I can see as I use the app on my phone and I don't think imgur does either. If they do some one please explain how you do it. That's the problem most are charging now for 3rd party hosting.

Photobucket has changed their prices and the cheapest I think is $4 a month now for 3rd party hosting. Try picture trail as I believe they still have free 3rd party hosting. I am using imgbb. Can't store all my photos there but it does allow me to upload one at a time and generates posting codes. Some are also using funkyimg but again can upload one at a time and not store them. Flickr was bought out by smugnug I think so imagine they will be charging for 3rd party hosting soon. Bad thing about Flickr is the app doesn't generate posting codes like the photobucket app does. I may end up getting the cheapest plan since I used to use the app on my phone a lot for posting. It was so easy and convenient and generated the codes. Mary

Agree Mary. I have so many photos stored on photobucket, many years worth. Their app made posting photos so easy. When they first started charging. I was still able to copy a photo from there to my laptop, but can’t even do that now.

now, I can’t get my photos from my phone to my laptop. I thought it was a Windows glitch, but Steve thinks it’s due to drivers missing requiring me to install iTunes again.

i don’t use iTunes at all anymore. I have Spotify and Amazon music.

These subscriptions add up. Everything is subscription now. Becomes costly when you’re retired.

Itunes is a free app, all you need is the app that installs the drivers. And spotify is free unless you want to pay for the ad free version.

I recently bought a SanDisk flash drive for my phone and it really works good. A few I transfer via Bluetooth to laptop but if I need to get a lot off the flash drive works nice. Hate taking the case off to get at that the memory card. I have an android phone with a USB C port but they have them for micro USB and I would imagine IPhone. $20 for 64gb. My old computers didn't have Bluetooth so I bought a Bluetooth adapter for $20 that worked nice but my new computers have it built in.. Mary

Thank you, Mary. I never tried a flash drive for the phone. Sounds easier than dealing with iTunes. I know if I download iTunes I’ll wind up with having to download the old music I have stored there. Which I don’t want anymore!

Thank you Steve. I pay for Spotify because my husband and I like choosing our music. I like it much better than iTunes. However, if I have to download it to my phone to get my pics, I will.
