Can't I keep just one rose?
Comments (2)I have seen squirrels eat rose buds. I had a large rose on an arbor and the squirrels would sit on the top to eat the flowers. I never noticed them eating from the lower part of the bush....See MoreI can't do it. I just can't do it.
Comments (34)I have never had a subscription to a cooking magazine - the only subscription I did have was to Illuminatrice, an Italian lighting magazine, and that was at work. The only magazines that I buy at the newsstand are Italian design magazines, some of which are quite expensive (I used to buy men's Italian fashion magazines, when I was more fashionable), and I have saved every one of them. I also buy Architectural Digest, Interiors, Veranda, etc. when they publish photos of my furniture designs, and I keep these also. My old magazine collection takes up one shelf in my garage, and I do refer to the Italian magazines from time to time for inspiration. I do collect clutter, but books and magazines are not part of that. I have one shelf of cookbooks in the hall next to the kitchen. I once bought a magazine on Feng Shui, but I decided that the magazine was clutter and got rid of it. I spent last week-end trying to declutter my bedroom because I also bought a new mattress that will be delivered tomorrow, and I want my room to look nice. Yesterday I made a runner with the fabric left over from making new drapes for my bedroom (to be able to block out light) and put it on the wide dresser beside my bed. The dresser on the other side of my bed has a runner I made from fabric left over from when I made my bedspread. I find that decorating or trying to coordinate rooms helps me get rid of clutter. However, I did put a bunch of books on the wide dresser using bookends. I don't have room for another bookcase. If I need to get more books, I will get rid of old ones that I have. Lately I have been buying and reading books on Anthropology and early human evolution. I read them at night to help me get to sleep, and so it takes a while to get through them. I cannot stand to watch Hoarders, but I will watch Clean House if I need inspiration to declutter. Making my house and yards look as beautiful as possible is one of my top priorities, and this helps me let go of clutter. I haven't gotten rid of it altogether, however, and so I think it is an on-going process. I have a hard time getting rid of old clothes that no longer fit, and I am convinced that sometime in the near future, they will fit again. Anyway, that is my goal. They may be terribly out of style or inappropriate by that time, however. Getting rid of old clothes is my biggest problem. One of the things I came across yesterday while decluttering was a printout from a Cooking Forum thread from 2005 that I started asking what was in everyone's freezer. It included a post by Ann_T on pitahaya (I happened to have some in my freezer at the time) that she had copied and pasted, bad Google translation and all. The translation was hysterically funny. Comments (23)Many people on here definitely write that word as "definately". Cemetery becomes "cemetary". But the one that troubles me is that many use "loose" for when they can't find something, rather than for a belt that's too long and lacks enough holes (or "loose" change). I say that when I "lose" something, I can't find it. I got on some people's case here a while ago about "weird", talking of "i" before "e", except after "c", except in such cases as "neighbour" or "weigh" ... and had to eat humble pie, for that latter list, weirdly, includes "weird", as well! (As for "neighbour" ... Canadians spell funny [i.e. peculiarly], as well). I think that there are a couple of others that are sort of my pet peeves, a;so ... but can't think of them at the moment, so I guess I'm not all bent out of shape over it! I have a hard time keyboarding the letters in correct sequence, too often getting two (sometimes more) in reverse sequence. It seems to me that we should give our children the example of doing things correctly and being precise, when possible. They should set their vision on excellence, for they are in global competition, these days, which is getting more intense. Those who figure that good enough will do ...will get left in the dust, I think. I don't have grandkids, and I am not exactly unhappy about that, for I think that life will be a great deal more difficult for people in our part of the world, within a generation. Our rich guys (mostly "guys") are getting really rich, and the numbers of the poor are expanding as the middle class gets hollowed out. Look at South America a generation ago ... and still, to a point. The means of production, of producing wealth, held in the hands of a few ... with millions of peons. End of rant. I hope that you're all enjoying this lovely spring weekend ... landlord says that we needed the heavy rains that we got last night and today. ole joyful...See MoreI can’t get the layout of the appliances quite right in this remodel!
Comments (10)Another layout, which puts the fridge on the long wall near the DR, as in Manon Floreat's plan, with the range and hood as a focal point between the two windows. There's a separate clean-up zone on the short wall, which will help hide the dirty/draining dishes from the front entry. You'd mentioned a sink in the island, so that becomes the primary prep area, with a secondary prep space between the clean-up sink and the range. With separate prep and clean-up zones, it will be easy for a helper to unload or load the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without interfering with prep and cooking tasks. I drew a 36" corner susan for pots and pans, but there is also a 30" drawer base in the island, which could store bakeware. Dish storage is on the island, in a 36" drawer, which opens toward the DW. There is a shallow shelf/cabinet facing the long wall--could be used for bottles of oil, cutting boards, baking sheets, or coffee cups/glasses. All base cabinets are drawers, with the exception of the trash pull-out and the shallow cabinet. The MW is in an upper cabinet to the right of the clean-up sink. I'd like to see it closer to the fridge, but couldn't fit it in above the counter. The MW could go in a drawer in the island, if the prep sink was centered (red outline), but then the primary prep space is not as wide. Two disadvantages are 1) there is no tall pantry cabinet, and 2) the dish storage is on the opposite end of the kitchen from the DR entry. Images--range between windows. GW Kitchens discussions--all drawer bases....See MoreUser
