Need bathroom help - no storage + too much tile
Hi everyone,
I'm brand-new to Houzz (and a brand-new homeowner, as of this Friday!). The master bath in my new 2br condo was built in 1995 and really hasn't been touched much since, with the exception of a new vanity.
My dilemma is space usage: a giant Jacuzzi tub takes up most of the room, there is no storage (no medicine cabinet or drawers), and the walls are 50-75% tiled.
I plan on doing a big renovation in 1-2 years (and will be back on this forum for advice then!), so for now my most pressing concern is how to create storage given the cramped layout and tiled walls, and how to make it feel more open and bright. I'm especially interested in tips or advice on;
- How or whether I can hang shelves on the tiled walls
- Storage solutions for under the vanity that would have the same ease as drawers -- I'm admittedly not tidy by nature, so anything that requires too much effort to put away will end up staying on my counter forever, to the dismay of bathroom-sharers
- If you think I should keep the vanity after the reno. My realtor said it is really nice, so I hate to waste the value, but I also wonder whether more value could be added by replacing it with something more functional.

Comments (3)Here's one suggestion: Depending on your layout, one vanity, one medicine cabinet, plus one floor-to-ceiling "built in" (like 18-24" wide, 12"-16" or so deep) in the corner (provided you have some floor clearance in front of it). If you keep things tidy and organized, leave it with an open front (no door) and shelves relatively far apart. Very useful and retains an open look. Comments (13)I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. Comments (49)I have an update and would love to get some feedback before I order the final accessories. (Demo begins one week from today!) I got a quote for replacing the vanity with white cabinetry complete with a sitting area, plus hardwiring of sconces. The costs all added up to too much for me, so I'm sticking with my vanity and overhead lighting location. I feel great about my choices for tile, bath tub, paint, and fixtures. My worry is that all the little accessory details won't quite work together, diminishing the beauty of the bathroom as a whole. I need to buy the accessories soon; here's what I have in mind. With overhead lighting instead of sconces, I prefer one large mirror. The mirror is by Pottery Barn, a wooden frame with gold gilt, 72" x 36". Perfect size for the space, very very very hard to find. This is technically a floor-length mirror, so I hope it can be mounted horizontally! PB customer service was useless when asked. The lights are also PB, polished nickel. For practical reasons, I ruled out any overhead lights that take type B bulbs (too dim) and have fabric shades (too hard to clean). As a big plus, these are on sale for $170 each. Do they go with the mirror and the rest of the room? Chandelier is PB, 18" diameter, antique brass, UL-listed. This will be over the tub on a dimmer. It was hard to find a chandy that's not too big, ornate, and/or expensive. Knobs and pulls are glass and polished nickel from Restoration Hardware. Towel ring, TP roll, and hook are Ballard Design in polished nickel. Fabric for the roman shade is gray on cream linen. Shower bench is Signature Hardware in teak. I hope this will help tie in the wood of the vanity with the other side of the room. Towel warmer is polished stainless steel (no nickel option) from Signature Hardware. I recently did a primarily white bathroom, but it was a smallish hall bathroom. 4x8 white subways with white grout and white quartz niche shelves in the tub/shower. Basically everything white in the bathroom except the floor which is blue hexagons. Even the vanity is white with a white quartz top (Cambria White Cliff, which was the closest shade of white quartz that I could find to blend with Daltile's Arctic White tile). I wanted a sea of white. I even did a white shower curtain but it's a chunky waffle weave so it adds some texture. BM chantilly lace white walls and ceiling. I was doing a small hall bath though and wanted it to look clean and bright and maybe a bit bigger. And I wanted the floor to be the star since I love the shade of blue and the hex shape. But really only you know if it's going to be too much white for your taste. I admit I got a little worried about there being too much white during the process but I stuck to my all white vision throughout and am happy with the final outcome. I don't find it to be too much white, but perhaps some people might. I did add some art to a couple walls (white frames with white matting and blue subject matter) but I'm still deciding if I like having the art up or prefer just plain white walls. 5 years agoCongratulations on your new home! I feel your pain on the storage issue. We purchased a circa 1930 home a couple of years ago and the baths are TINY!
I switched one of the towel bars in mine for one like this Fold-able towel bar with hooks
I use the hooks to hang my make-up bag and other personal products that are not used all the time. I can easily (and neatly) fold 2 or 3 towels on top and use the bar for wash clothes and hand towels.
I use this Rotating Organizer on the counter for the stuff I use all the time-tooth brush and paste, creams, cleansers, etc. Keeps the counter tidy since overnight guests share this bath with us. It's not fancy but sturdy and blends in, lol.We have very wide moldings around our doors so I had enough room to put 2 of these, Command Wall and Cabinet Organizer behind the door.
I have 2 of these Under counter organizers that can be used for all sorts of stuff.
These little things have actually helped, a lot! We plan to change out our standard vanity for a taller one but that will be a bit down the line. When you get ready to renovate your bath is when you should decide on your vanity. Live with it and see what you want. I, personally, would opt for a vanity with more storage.Good luck and have fun with your new home!

5 years agoQuestion: do you *need* a separate shower? You could update to a freestanding tub, add a shower head, then use that former separate shower space for some kind of storage. Maybe even add in an armoire or something like that.

5 years agoA1, it looks like you might have enough room for this piece ,with lots of drawers , on the wall where your towel rack is currently. It is small enough, I think , to still be able to open the shower door . You would just need to add a towel hook closer to the shower. With a fun piece of art on the wall over it , I think this could be rather cute . Since you are remodeling in a couple of years, this wouldn’t be as costly or as difficult as redoing your mirror wall - since that might have to be changed later, as well . You could then use this little cart in a closet or somewhere for extra storage later. This cart can roll, but has stops on the wheels to keep it stationary. CONGRATULATIONS on your new, first home. Wishing you happiness there.
