5 years ago1. Damaris. This modern hybrid gallica has the strongest fragrance of my once-blooming roses. Basically old rose, but also with a distinct dried fruit character.
2. Souvenir de Gilbert Nabonnand. An old tea rose with very intense fragrance but I can't really describe what it smells like.
3. Koré. One of my favourites for fragrance. Very fruity with strong raspberry notes.

My most fragrant rose
Comments (37)It's hard for me to say, since very few roses I planted AREN'T fragrant. When I was selecting roses, scent was the first thing I searched, though there's a handful I picked for other reasons and which aren't particularly fragrant. Consequently, I can't easily pick "the most fragrant" out of what I grow. Every time I think "oh, this one" I realize that it was just the most recent to bloom. What I have noticed among my pot-pet red HTs is that those I have which are descended from 'Crimson Glory' are particularly wonderful, and have only subtle variations on the same scent, which matches that of 'Crimson Glory' -- 'Big Ben', 'Chrysler Imperial', 'Heart's Desire', 'Mirandy', 'Mister Lincoln', 'Nocturne', 'Oklahoma', 'Red Masterpiece', 'Rose of Freedom' and 'Velvet Fragrance'. 'Orfeo' is a climber I have trained into a hacked-back Callery pear (and it has canes nearing 20' long going up into the tree now), and it, too, smells just like its grandparent 'Crimson Glory'. It's the only one of the "family" I have planted in the ground, with one white and one lavender-blue clematis using it as a trellis to get into the tree. I can't wait for next year -- this year, 'Orfeo' bloomed a little for the first time since I planted it last year, so I expect a show in its third year. Of the most fragrant OGRs, I'd be naming the usual suspects as the most fragrant of what I have from their groups -- three of my Bourbons ('Mme de Sevigne', 'Mme Dore', and 'Souvenir de Victor Landeau'), six of my HPs ('Georg Arends ', "Grandmother's Hat", 'Monsieur Boncenne', 'Pierre Notting', 'Reine des Violettes' and 'Yolande d'Aragon'), both of my Damasks ('Botzaris' and 'Quatre Saisons Blanc Mousseaux'), three of my Damask Perpetuals ('Indigo', 'Rose de Rescht' and 'Rose du Roi, original'), one of the Gallicas ('Georges Vibert'), both Hybrid Chinas ('Duchesse d'Angouleme' and 'Nouveau Monde'), and, of course, 'Rosa moschata' in its single-form, as well as "Secret Garden Musk Climber" (if you count that as an OGR). Of the Austin roses, I'd give the awards to 'Abraham Darby', 'Golden Celebration', 'Jude the Obscure', 'Prospero', 'Tamora' and 'The Prince'. That leaves 'Happy Child' as the only Austin I have which is not mentioned -- but this came as a band this year, and I've been pinching buds until recently, so can't really offer an opinion. Interestingly, the roses whose fragrance carries the farthest (i.e. "wafters") tend to be less intensely scented up-close (except, perhaps, for 'R. moschata' and "Secret Garden Musk Climber", which succeed at both). The winners here would be mostly Multiflora-derived (and my handful of Moschata-derived): 'Bubble Bath', 'Clotilde Soupert', "Darlow's Enigma", 'Marie Pavie', 'Mlle Blanche Lafitte', 'Perle d'Or', 'Reverend Seidel', 'Rosa moschata', and "Secret Garden Musk Climber". This was the second year in the ground for most of my roses, and already the yard was full of yummy scent in May and June. Supporting the roses was a small cast of scented Dianthus which mostly bloomed at the same time. Unfortunately, July and August here was not as knock-your-socks-off, so I have 25 each of mixed Oriental, Trumpet and Orienpet lilies coming with a bulb order in a few weeks which will perfume the yard until the roses rebound from their mid-summer sleep. Comments (59)Barbara's pasture, Irene ford, Elisabeths china, Grandmothers hat, madam anissette, Mary rose, golden celebration, angel face, and Julia child. Scentimental and duchesse de brabant have a decent fragrance also. I also have setzer noisette and have been told it has a strong musk/ floral scent but I'm not sure I can smell noisettes that well since It smells lightly to me . I also have copperopolis bar which was described as VERY fragrant, but it's a slow establishing rose that puts most of its energy into trying to bloom , so I haven't had many blooms to smell....See MoreWhat are your most fragrant roses today?

Comments (154)Carol: The peachy rose in my bouquet is Summer Samba floribunda (fruity scent). Stehapnie: My own-root Golden Celebration smells like cupcakes from the oven, it makes my house smells like a cross between a florist shop and a bakery (YUM). One bloom perfumes the entire kitchen. Crimson glory (hybrid tea) smells good on the bush, but the scent is gone after 1 day in the vase. I prefer Firefighter's scent that lasts until petals drop. For quality of scent, I place Gruss an Teplitz's spicy scent over Firefighter. Gruss is drought tolerant & likes heat. It blooms best when the weather is over 90 F. Gruss grows wild in Pakistan's hot & dry and alkaline sandy soil (learned that from Khalid, who used to post in Organic rose forum). 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agovaporvac, I''d never heard of the Anne Boleyn rose before, I'll have to do some researching and most likely buy it hahah.
Currently my most fragrant ones are:
1. Milwuakees Calatrava. It had 2 blooms last week, it's the very first season I've had it and it was a bare root. From those 2 tiny blooms I could smell it across the yard!
2. Lavender Crush

3. Poet's Wife was giving off some great scent tonight too. Also only in it's first season from a bare root pretty large considering though!! Such huge, heavy blooms that the new teeny stems can't hold them upright so I had to tie them to bamboo hahah.

5 years agoI just love Young Lycidas! These pictures are wonderful! This one has been on my wish list for a long time. I wonder how he would do in my hot and dry climate and how large he would grow.
Today I’m dumping my fragrant bouquet of Baronne Prevost, Louise Odier, and various other flowers that were in bloom when I was cutting. This made the room smell so good! Too bad they don’t last forever. I’m posting one more picture of this super fragrant bouquet. It was so nice while it lasted.
Today my most fragrant rose is Princess Charlene de Monaco. I can’t get enough of her scent!
Abe Darby is smelling pretty good today, too!

It was gifted to me by a fellow former member along with another one, but I think I confused their tags! It's either pretty Jessica or scepter'd Isle. The scent reminds me of some sort of candy. It's very strong, so I'm thinking it's scepter'd Isle? I'll post a pic in a second. It's the first Bloom and looks pretty ratty with thrips, but perhaps the slightly bullate leaves and new growth will help with an ID. click to enlarge photos.

my don juan's have an amazing scent! The potted one was a $3.50 bareroot half dead with 2 leaves from walmart.The pink enchantment eleganza below smells like a bottle of rose perfume and is sturdy.
he savannah sunbelt has a light pretty rose scent.
my Oklahoma smells like lemon and is so pretty and the stems are long.just joey and heirloom have beautiful scents as well but don't last long after cutting but bloom continuously.
moonlight magic has a lemon scent but the bloom cycle is long.
pink peace is lemony as well and is a beautiful pink.
Kordes summer romance smells like heaven but takes a lot of nurturing. I had three and I'm down to 2.
I just purchasedthe coral dawn climber and it has a beautiful sweet scent. I can't wait to plant it

5 years agoSpeaking of bulbs. Last night I dug up about 10 huge tulip shaped bulbs but they are about 7 inches long. I planted ( in pots ) 3 of them to see what they are. They never bloomed since we have been here because of the huge juniper.

Fragrant Cloud - more orange than the photo shows. I SO love this rose. The fragrance is strong, and a little odd - took some getting used to. But I love it now, and I'm nuts over this rose.
Bella'roma: - this rose is hard to photograph, and she's not a fast repeat bloomer. But her fragrance is hands down, one of my favorites in my garden. Every bloom she gives me is a gift.
Young Lycidas - Lisa, he does WONDERFULLY in dry heat!
Neptune: A newer rose for me, and this bloom round is one of the most fragrant I've had from her. Lovely fragrance!
More of Stainless Steel. I am in awe of the bloom form of this rose (and fragrance too!)
Chrysler Imperial - one bloom at a time right now, but each blooms smells like heaven.
Tiffany - I threatened her, and she gave me a super fragrant bloom
Ok, so my Dusty isn't really fragrant (smells like old ranch dog). But she IS next to a bloom of Fragrant Cloud, and is my best garden companion.
