Jackson & Perkins liquidation sale?
Comments (11)Funny you should ask --- just thought the same thing to myself and went and put in an order with J & P after writing that first post. I ordered some that I think will not be around that I were on my "someday" list. Beauty Within, Florence Nightingale, Sweet Freedom, and (because floribundas are cheaper in threes lol) Disneyland Rose and Sweet Intoxication. I justified it to myself with the thought that they were cheaper than normal, and therefore a little risk is permitted. Anyway, yes, I think you can get bareroots to sprout now, but you have to take special care that the canes don't dry out while the roots develop enough feeder roots to keep the plant alive. You can mist them constantly (impractical) or put a load of mulch wood chips around them, kept in place by a bottomless box as in the picture below, or you can put stakes around them and put a white plastic trash bag over them held away from the canes by the stakes (but only if they are not in the direct sun, which would cook them). Anyway, the idea is to keep the canes moist but not cooked. Sometimes I do this anyway if the weather reports call for hot, dry winds (what we call Santa Anas) or if the bareroots come in looking already dried out. It also takes some luck when you're this late in the year. Click the picture for a bigger version. Good luck. Kathy...See MoreIs anyone getting their rose orders from Jackson & Perkins?
Comments (28)When I ordered from the HD sale that was posted here, I got fabulous J&P roses, and got them fast. I ordered the test panel roses from J & P and they got here fast and healthy. Then I ordered from Wayside on June 6, and the guy who took my order thanked me for calling and ordering from Jackson and Perkins. Huh? Oops, he said, we just bought J & P and I take orders for both. I asked if the roses were coming from Wayside in S. Carolina or from J & P in California. He said we have them here in S. Carolina, and we'll send them to you in a week and a half. I called today, and they said the roses won't be shipped until June 30, and they are coming from..you guessed it...California (in this heat?) and will be from J & P. They also deleted part of my order, item no longer carried. Their transition isn't going so well because both companies are losing customers now. I don't understand why they advertised so heavily when they can't fulfill the orders, and they are going to end up refunding so many of them. You would think they would assign an employee to at least communicate with customers about the delays. From a business perspective, I think they would have been better off to compost the excess stock than to alienate so many customers when they can't deliver healthy goods. People don't remember the good price they got on something, they remember long delays, lack of communication, fried plants, bad information. That's sure not going to make them come back next year willing to pay full price....See MoreJackson perkins, weeks
Comments (5)Weeks bought out J&P's stock but you can't buy direct from Weeks unless you purchase a wholesale order. You'll have to take your chances from a retailer, online or a garden center, who buys from Weeks. I believe Armstrong or Regans carries some Weeks varieties. I've purchased roses from Hortico and Edmunds that had a Weeks tag attached....See MoreWhich rose house: Jackson & Perkins, Weeks, Austin, Kordes, Meilland..
Comments (19)Goodness, Moses! You really spurred on my curiosity! I went through and counted all my roses and their breeders to find the winner and it's exactly as I thought. I could have saved myself some trouble! ; ) The top spot was close with Kordes followed by Austin and then Weeks if I count the distributor and Pemberton if I'm looking at the breeder. Weeks' breeders were evenly split between Bedard and Carruth. The rest are all onsies twosies withe Meilland at three, Boerner, Lambert, Turbot, LeVavasseur, Shoup, Basye, Bentall and Buck all coming in at two a piece. I do look at Breeders and hope to grow my collection of Jerabek and Bagnasco roses and try some of the Lens Hybrid Musks. I would think being bred in Belgium where I barely recall the sun shining, that they would be healthier. Although, I hardly associate England with year-round sun. I do really like my Kordes roses that I've had for three seasons. They have really changed in terms of blooming with the exception of Fire Opal which was a winner from the get go. With the exception of Munstead Wood and Molineux, my Austins were cheap impulse buys from Lowe's. I'm happy with them, but do feel they would prefer a slightly more acidic soil, much like the Pembertons. The Weeks roses mainly came from a Springhill Rainbow of Roses sale and they are none too healthy in terms of Black spot. We'll see if they improve next year. They do bloom alot, however. I've been meaning to do this, so thanks for the push! ; )...See Morerochesterroseman
