J&P's own website seems to support the idea of a vast blown-out sale of roses. Not sure if that is truly the end of J&P, but it sure looks grim for their future.

That webpage is from Growquest. You don't want to buy from them. They've got over twice as many negative reviews as positive on garden watch dog.

I had heard JP was in bankruptcy but I don't know if they're going to stop selling roses.

J&P does this almost every year. I don't know if I trust that other site.

DO NOT BUY FROM GROWQUEST. NEVER NEVER EVER!!!! That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. You send your money and get nothing in return. The same prices are available for almost all of these roses on the actual J&P site, which, even in bankruptcy, is still far more reliable than Growquest under normal circumstances.

My guess as to what is going on here is that J&P contracted someone to grow J&P's roses and then didn't pay them as part of the bankruptcy process and now Growquest has them to get rid of them somehow. I think this also happened to Weeks, which I heard had large numbers under contract to J&P for next year and then just recently discovered they weren't going to be paid for them, because of the bankruptcy. It appears that J&P is going under, probably permanently, as they've laid off almost everyone involved in marketing or future operations at this point, but the website appears to be operating, and the prices are mostly $10 per bareroot plant. If it weren't too late to plant bareroot here, I'd be jumping in on the sale at J&P.

But, again, don't even give serious consideration to the Growquest come on. Their bad reputation is well-earned.

Rats! J&P is a name brand that has such history. Reminds me of when I heard GM was going bankrupt. Not just a car company but a piece of Americana was at stake.... What will happen to all the existing patents on roses? Will the newer roses still under patent just fade into oblivion until the patent expires and the own root companies pick them up?.... If true, what about Wayside and Parks seeds are they history too? When I ordered from Parks seeds this spring I asked to speak to a supervisor about the rumors as it applied to Parks seeds in particular. He said they were true and that the employees were aware of the dire circumstances the company was in, but he thought that the company was on the road to a solution. I hope Growquest is wrong about the chaos and disolution of the company (companies).

kathy, is there any way to have a bareroot survive at this point in the year? there were a couple JP roses I liked... but I wonder where else I can get them later if they really go under.

Funny you should ask --- just thought the same thing to myself and went and put in an order with J & P after writing that first post. I ordered some that I think will not be around that I were on my "someday" list. Beauty Within, Florence Nightingale, Sweet Freedom, and (because floribundas are cheaper in threes lol) Disneyland Rose and Sweet Intoxication. I justified it to myself with the thought that they were cheaper than normal, and therefore a little risk is permitted.

Anyway, yes, I think you can get bareroots to sprout now, but you have to take special care that the canes don't dry out while the roots develop enough feeder roots to keep the plant alive. You can mist them constantly (impractical) or put a load of mulch wood chips around them, kept in place by a bottomless box as in the picture below, or you can put stakes around them and put a white plastic trash bag over them held away from the canes by the stakes (but only if they are not in the direct sun, which would cook them). Anyway, the idea is to keep the canes moist but not cooked. Sometimes I do this anyway if the weather reports call for hot, dry winds (what we call Santa Anas) or if the bareroots come in looking already dried out.

I've planted bare roots in the hot July in Georgia. You will need to soak the plants for a few days up to a week and then take extra care after the rose is planted, but it can be done.

Fifteen years ago, I went to the Park Seed day at the end of JUNE! Their rose sales had been slow and every bareroot had been refrigerated and each plant was a dollar, cash.
I bought 110. All lived. Planted in Tennessee the first week of July from Bareroots. I watered them every two or three days. The soils they went into weren't good, because we had only built one new rose bed for a bout 20 roses. I didn't know to mound them up with mulch. But they all lived.

If your summer is hotter than mine, no guarantees, but if it's like mine or cooler, I think you have a chance IF you have the time to devote to them this summer.

I'll wait a few more days and see what's going on.
