It is interesting the different perspectives that we all have re: the feeling we wish to have for a room. Still since it is a master I wonder if what you are really missing is a sense of "warmth" to the room vs the natural light. The white in a north facing dark room would be pretty dismal and not feel warm at all. I think with proper lighting and color you can create the "mood" you want with any color that speaks to you. Every single person who sees my mstr bedroom asks how I came up with the color after saying they love it but are certain they would never choose it. DH was sure he wouldn't like it but loves it too. I agree that on the chip it is questionable but in the room it creates a beautiful tranquil feeling that is warm and light at the same time. It mixes beautifully with silver tones and that adds a lot more light to the room - silver plated drapery rods, white murano glass pendants with silver leafing beside the bed over simple mirrored night stands - all help create the mood. It is an east facing room with full sliding doors that are covered with heavy silk - also light reflecting - drapes to allow sleep past 5:30 in the summer months! Light is not really an issue but as someone above mentioned we are in the room mostly at night and I don't want to feel like I am in a dark cave reading in bed at night. Anyway, I would recommend looking through inspiration photos of room here and on HGTV - figure out which ones create the mood you want for your room - avoiding any that seem require full natural light - and incorporate the colors into your room. Think about everything in the room and how it contributes to the feeling - bedding can make a huge difference. So many of the new designs incorporate silks and other reflective materials that can add to the warmth and light in the room.

What a coincidence! I live in Louisiana near the Gulf. My room faces east, so after noon, there is hardly any light. That's one thing I hate about this house. The living room should have tons of windows that look out on the backyard. There is nothing to look at out of these windows except the house next door! The master bedroom is similar with the tray ceiling and the only overhead light from a ceiling fan, but the walls are a pale sage green with some gray undertones. I don't get that same "hot" feeling in here, even though the room is much more cluttered with furniture. It always feels "crisp and cool" in here. I wish I could explain what I'm trying to say better! I think I'll start looking at grays. I'm just worried about my drapes and other stuff. I usually naturally gravitate to golds, greens, crimson, and oranges. Will this work with grayish-blue?

Do you have a close up of the backsplash? Is the kitchen open to the family room? Are there any colors you like or want to avoid? I would think a midtone neutral for the kitchen since the backsplash is busy, but I’m no expert. Most of my rooms are SW nomadic desert or kilim beige. Something similar may work. Or SW Accessible beige. I’ve seen that look good in low light and HD has the formulas in the computer.

"However this is not an option as this is a condo and would not be approved." The roof is a common element but that doesn't mean that you couldn't request a change from the condo board. There are already things that belong exclusively to your condo alone such as vent pipes that extend through the roof. I like the idea of moving the candle thing between the windows where the orange picture is. Perhaps you could paint it a lighter color. As others suggested, I have a large rug (actually it's bound carpet) that covers the living room floor and upon which the living room furniture sits. Not only does it make the room lighter, it gives a cohesiveness to the living room area. Perhaps swap the dark valances above the windows for light-colored ones -- or paint them -- as they do not match the light window frames. -- amateur
