How do I get my fragnant plants to bloom ?
Comments (1)I know someone who owns Belle of India and Duke of Tuscany and her plants were full of buds. She uses a fertilizer called Bloom Booster. Basically it is v.high in phosphorus. I read that phosphorus helps with formation of strong stems, buds and hence more flowers. YOU could either mix it into your potting mix or buy the miracle grow/peters blooming mix and use it every 2-3 weeks half the recommended amount. i.e if it calls for 1tsp for a gallon of water once a month, you could do half a tsp. for a gallon of water every 2-3 week. Fertilizing in small dose frequently is better than a big dose once a month. hope this helps...See MoreHow do I get my hydrangea to bloom?
Comments (2)First it is good to identify what kind of hydrangea you have. If it blooms pink or blue then you have H. macrophylla which should NOT be pruned in the fall (otherwise you cut the flower buds off). What gardening zone are you in? Perhaps zone 5? If so, you might also be getting winter freeze on the buds and killing the flowers that way. 'Endless Summer' is one hydrangea was developed to overcome winter bud kill because it can bloom on new wood. Please look at the site below for lots more information about caring for hydrangeas. Here is a link that might be useful: Very good site on the care of hydrangeas...See Morecan I get my asiatics to bloom more?
Comments (7)I agree, those Asiatic lilies could not possibly have bloomed twice. Just not going to happen. Those are seed pods that are forming now, not new buds. I have had a potted Easter lily grow an entirely new stem and bloom again for me, once. Then it died. The bloom was only one or two buds, I can't remember. I've had more than one grow stems but not bloom. This was after they bloomed for Easter, didn't sell so I brought them home and planted them. I have brought home and planted many potted lilies over the years and Easter lilies are the only ones who have grown new stems the same season. They were really short but they were new. FYI, it isn't the florists who treat the lilies with growth retardants it is the wholesale growers. (I was a florist for over twenty years)...See MoreHow do I improve the soil once my roses are planted?
Comments (50)Civil Servant, You have struck gold with all the excellent advice given by so many well informed Roses Forum Rosarians. My comments basically reinforce what they are sharing with you. Fish emulsion stinks, literally. It has its good uses in some cases. It is mostly nitrogen, which you are already applying in a sufficient amount if you opt for the Miracle Grow Pellets or another well balanced rose fertilizer, organic or non. Too much nitrogen is not good: weak, over abundant, lush, and disease/insect prone growth at the expense of flower production, is the outcome. Ditto for blood meal. Be mindful of those animal product fertilizers in light of their critter attracting nature. Even if you live in the city, alley cats can be drawn to your garden, and they will not leave your garden without voiding. Then there are urban wildlife, particularly raccoons and opossums, even skunks, coyotes and coywolves. You don't want to attract them. I do like seaweed fertilizer as an occasional foliar feed because of the multitude of minerals it contains, but it is not really critical to use it. Its use is more like dessert in comparison to a well balanced main meal. Also, there are no odor issues....See Moreparadiseprincess51
