Kitchen dilemma: cabinets and countertops

I recently purchased a home that was built in 1989 and pretty much everything in the house is original. I originally was planning on painting the existing cabinets (that are in good condition), and adding a quartz countertop. But then I started re-thinking that idea, since higher end countertops on 30 yr old builder grade cabinets seems a little...lopsided. So I started looking into marble-look Formica countertops. My investor really thinks quartz countertops are the way to go (and I do love them), and is encouraging me to look at kitchen cabinets. But then I started looking at reviews of cabinets, and now I'm anxious over buying cabinets that are of lesser quality of what I already have.

Am I over thinking all of this? Would quartz countertops on existing cabinets be ill-advised? Help!

Note: in the photo, we've basically removed the lower desk area, and placed the pictured island in its place. It really opened up the space.
