backsplash for black cabinets and wood countertop dilemma!!

Hello! I’m trying to figure out what backsplash tile should i use for my black kitchen amd hope you guys can help 😀 i have three option here, black 10x30 matte subway, white 10x30 glossy/matte subway, marble 10x30 glossy subway.. I personally like the black one because it looks dramatic but my husband said it’s too much black.. i have no worry about lighting because i have A LOT of lights and HUGE windows, my kitchen is next to the balcony.. thanks before! I personally find the white subway tile more aesthetically appealing. I feel like your black cabinets pop even more with the white contrast. You can also play with the grout color--white tile and dark grout. Good luck!

It's so hard to really know without pictures. What style are your cabinets? If they are very contemporary I think a black glass backsplash could look great (I'm actually envisioning a glass mosaic with the long skinny tiles in a variety of colors (black, white, gray, etc.). If your cabinets veer more toward traditional or transitional, I think I'd rather see something lighter that matches the cabinets.

Hi Everyone, Just wanted to check back in after a year with the stone. It has really grown on me as a feature I love. Cleaning has not been bad. Actually some pasta sauce dumped on wall behind cooktop and it was ok to clean with a scrub brush and water (cleaned right when it happened). Elsewhere, it has been fine after initial clean and seal. Just vacuumed it once with a brush tip. I also want to thank everyone for their opinions, advice, kind words, and - most of all - the encouragement! As a mostly DIYer, I always wanted to design and build a home. This was my first whole-home-reno, and I learned a lot and the encouragement provided by many, including y’all, really helped my confidence. I am very proud to say that the home was entered in NARI Meta / CoTY for whole-home-reno and it won for local-chapter and Southwest region. Thanks again everyone & do not fear stacked stone backsplashes!

I had a similar situation. Finding a tile I liked that came with a coordinating corner bullnose was like trying to find a unicorn. I finally “settled” for using the thinnest matching pencil tile for the tile I liked, mitering it at the corner. We matched the grout to the tile and I was pleasantly surprised that the pencil tile doesn’t “stick out” at all. I ended up loving it. The matching grout was key. If you end up with shelves or a cabinet on that side you will still need either a pencil tile or Schluter edge on the side. The Schluter isn’t my thing - a bit to modern looking for our kitchen - but you can see both types of edge in the Houzz photos.

I'd go w a slate look vinyl tile. and the middle choice of the formica in row of five. A mini trac lite above sink and serpentine one in center of kitchen will assist w lighting . Then the slate look floor will ground the space/not be so dark and help the oak go for another lease on life as per your decision.... [ consider swap of some uppers for glass doors] . Not sure about beige sand cream floor tones...just get a slate look /classic/ hard to beat.

the marble subway is my pick. it has a softer feel for the space. Not only do you want a light color [white or very light green] you want to soften what is going on in the space. the marble provides that. it looks good. the all white w dark grout doesn't get that part done. Might be interesting to see how many variations on the white marble veined tiles exist. I'm not super familiar. I'd try a few samples up. I would NOT pick the black.
