Not exactly what I ordered

I saw Gabriel's Wing at a hosta convention last year, liked it, and ordered one from Made in the Shade. All the hostas that came were small, but Gabriel's Wing was just one leaf. I figured, OK, first year T.C.s tend to be small.

It grew like mad, but instead of being green with gold edges, it was all gold. I wrote asking if it developed variegation as the leaves aged. It took three tries to get an answer.

Apparently some of the T.C.s came out gold, and they're being evaluated for possible introduction. One six pack got mixed in with the Gabriel's Wing hostas, and that's what I got. Of course, the plant had sold out.

The owner said he'd found a couple true Gabriel's Wings during inventory and would send one on Tuesday. Two weeks went by, and I got a note saying the one they have is smaller than the one I got, and would I rather wait. So fingers crossed for next spring.

Here's my oops hosta. If they do introduce it, don't you think Gabriel's Horn would be a great name?

I think I would like gold with such upright habit! I heard that Made in Shade changed hands... not sure what future holds?

They look like stem bulbs. Just leave them alone. Lily bulbs have contractile roots and will when necessary pull themselves deeper into the soil. In two to three years those babies will have formed blooming size bulbs. You are indeed fortunate if you have Stargazers producing new bulbs, for many people they last only 2 or 3 years before disappearing.

Anyone Ordered from Home Perfect?

I ended up purchasing three items from Home Perfect. Toto LPT3158G Pedestal Lavatory 8 InchCC with SanaGloss (Cotton) Toto CST744SF.10 Drake Two-Piece Toilet 1.6GPF (Cotton) Toto ss154 Elongated Traditional Soft Close Seat (Cotton) All three arrived exactly as I purchased and in excellent condition. I was not certain how to expect shipment and they ended up coming on a freight carrier (R&L Carriers) strapped to a pallet. My only complaint was the time to delivery and the lack of communication on when that might be. I placed the order 02/06 and received them 02/22. While I did not mind terribly that it took more than two weeks to receive the items, I did not receive any update until the items shipped. No estimated delivery date (or even estimated shipping date) was provided after placing the order. I did not receive any communication (beyond the immediate order confirmation) until a shipment confirmation on 02/17. And then after the tracking information became active a few days later, the estimated delivery date was way off. However, the items eventually arrived and I am very pleased with the prices and that I received exactly what I ordered. When I tried to purchase the same toilet locally a year ago (for a higher price), I ended up receiving a 1.28 gallon even though I specifically asked for a 1.6 gallon. Upon complaint, I was told that I simply could not get a 1.6 gallon anymore because they were unavailable from suppliers. I wish I would have ordered from Home Perfect that time as well. I hope this information is helpful to anyone else considering purchasing from Home Perfect.

I like them but I also have chairs that are similar. Don't use cushions, the seats of the chairs are just too pretty, and if you notice, they're made with the shape of the legs in mind. If you prefer to use only 4 chairs, set the other two in the corners. You could set matching ferns on top to add a little more decor to the room. Actually, I think two matching wrought iron plant stands with ferns on top would look superb in the corners. lol.

I did like them the 2nd day, too, especially because after being in the refer, the fat hardens and it's easy to remove most of it. I wonder if the oven browning might be better on a broiler pan, so the fat drips away. I might try that next time. My friends I cooked this for now want me to make it for a huge party they're having this summer. I think I'll try one batch on a broiler pan before then and see how they do. I'd probably put them back in a regular pan when adding the veggies.

Gee, I didn't know about the change of ownership! Glad I found out here. Here is the Made in the Shade Facebook page about the change of hands. I bought a lot of hostas over the years from Rob and consulted with him over the phone many times about something or other re my hostas. He always sent me nice plants and was always happy to answer questions, whether over the phone or email:

It is with mixed emotions that I must announce that I am no longer the owner of Made in the Shade Garden’s retail/mail order hosta business. I was honored to serve you over the last 19 years. As of January 1, 2018 the new owner is Trey Rutledge. Please join me in wishing Trey every success. I trust you will afford Trey the opportunity to gain your confidence just as you afforded me that same opportunity 19 years ago.

Yup, Rob is doing tissue culturing for several other nurseries now. The new guy seems to be having a hard time. Rob made it look effortless, but he started small and grew. Trey is new and has a steep learning curve.

What I'll really miss is seeing Rob as a vendor at conventions.

One of the big problems with getting "the latest and greatest" is that when they go to tc they all don't come true to type. The cool part is that some sports come out of the tc process too. If you really-o, truly-o want a specific hosta....wait for the grower to grow it a few years to make sure it comes up out of the ground looking the named hosta it is supposed to be.

I would give that new little one a few years to see whatcugot. Many sports come out of tc these days.
