I think Hoosier's dated before '50's & 60's I was a kid then & only people I knew with them were elderly people. My aunt's had a door like you are talking about, looked like beadboard I think. The countertop on hers was metal, that was where she made bread every day & rolled out cookies & piecrust. I think the metal was an advantage as it was always "cool' to the touch. My aunt' had flour & sugar bins in bottom lined with tin. they were on 1 side & other side had shelves. I was born in '42 & in 50's only my elderly aunts had Hoosier's, I lived at a lake so I had a lot of neighbor's that invited me in, especially in winter as I was about only kid around, they had the chrome & red or gray Formica kitchen tables but no Hoosier's. Some of relatives had no electricity & you picked up phone & told operator who you wanted to talk to in the small towns. Our town was about 14,000 & we had party lines so we were more modern. Relatives also had pump you primed for water in the kitchen & had to warm water for doing dishes. Outhouses were the norm until mid '60's after I was out of high school. I think people couldn't afford to update as S. Dak. had a personal property tax so if you bought a sofa of foam & wood(about cheapest thing made) for $100 you paid a tax on it each year. Maybe $5 or less ,but every large thing in house was taxed too,nobody could afford it. They have gotten rid of that tax somewhere along the way. It did a lot to keep the poor poor!!Probably why there were Hooiser's in rural areas but not in town among younger families. I also spent a lot of time at 2nd hand furniture store & they had some but don't remember if they sold very well. It was a safe place for me to keep warm so dad could pick me up there when he finally got off work. I think your item is from early 1900's not later than 1930's.

crcollins - I love your kitchen, and can't wait to see the photos when it is completely finished. I am in the planning stages of a kitchen remodel, and I am very much leaning towards the Formica Aqua Dotscreen for my counters. I just sent away for a sample of this and a few of the other Formica 100th anniversary patterns, as they don't seem to have them in stores. I have searched all over, and there don't seem to be any photos online of the countertop installed. In fact, before I found this post, I came across a post from you on another site where Formica responded that there were no installed photos. If you could please post a photo or two of the installed Aqua Dotscreen countertop, I would be very appreciative! I would be putting it on white cabinets as well. I'm also wondering what type of edge you chose. Thank you!

Jhmarie- I wish I had a bigger budget right now....I have often thought there is too much pattern* or things going on with everything. I had the bisque appliances until they finally died and replaced them with the slate appliances. Changing the appliances really changed everything. I am a Corian fan because of the integrated sink, though would consider quartz countertop. I did not realize the newer way of countertops was not to put the 4 in. backsplash on the back.. Its been close to 15 years that was done. If that comes off then the stone mosaic backsplash would come down also at at the same time. I have to be budget conscious at the present so your ideas and that of the others on here I would: go to a lighter countertop- taking the backsplash down and re doing the floor in a plain tile. I have the Tarkett floor down as it was discovered there was a roll in my floor and they had it hid with patterned carpet. Hubby did not want to fix the floor (roll eyes) so I did the best I could and put down a fiber floor which needed no repairs. It does need fixed however and not fixing it prevents me/us from putting tile down or even the loc floors. I like your suggestion of taking stone backsplash down (ourselves) and doing the drywall over again and just painting it. As for countertops- what colors would you guys suggest with my cherry? I have looked at Fawn in Corian. I tried grays but they seem to compete with the slate appliances. What colors can you put with warm cabinetry? To answer another question posted- I just have a medium beige carpet with slight golden tones in the surrounding rooms.

Hi Patricia, Thank you for the feedback! Maybe contemporary is not the right word? I'll edit my post. I basically like the look in the kitchen inspiration photos. I know this sounds crazy, but I kind of hate chrome...outside of my chrome oven of course. Do you have any other finish/ hardware suggestions that would go with a black and white/wood kitchen?
