Double front door color on the inside

We are remodeling a historic home and need to choose a paint color for the inside of the double front doors. Exterior is SW Tricorn Black. Being historic it has a separate entry which is about 14x14ft. There is a large cased opening as you enter the foyer that leads to the family room, another smaller cased opening directly to the right leading to the dining, and a window on the left. All trim is SW Alabaster and the wood floor will be stained jacobean. My dilemma is the walls are completely covered in the original dark stained shiplap which is beautiful but sort of dark. I'd like to paint the interior of the front double doors Tricorn Black but am worried it will make the entry too heavy. Another option is SW Pavestone which is a medium gray. Any help or opinion is welcome!

beautiful entry. I hope the wood shiplap is staying as is?

what if you did the door a similar blue that's on the cabinets in the other room? something in that family?

If you paint the oak molding on the door, it will no longer match the molding on the closet door, right next to it, as well as the rest of the house. Bad move. I don't understand the advantage of having a visually bigger door without the matching trim. Maybe you can achieve a similar result by painting the door a color from the trim. A tan with a ruddy color to it, kind of a base color of the trim. Then the other colors of the trim will act as the 'visually bigger' part that you want.

Oh, I love the pale aqua doors with the white walls! Gorgeous! The black looked a bit too harsh to me, although I understand why they did that.. The lime green in the Modern setting gives off a nice vibe. In a small, crowded setting, I'd use the same color as on the walls to decrease that visual break up and busyness. Smalloldhouse: I think it's present color is perfect. Our front door, inside and out, is just the weathered wood color. I wanted to paint it turquoise and DH almost had a cow. Too bad, as it would look great.

Once it's been painted, it will NEVER look right re-stained. This happened with much of the millwork in our remodeled church 20 yrs ago. It looks awful to this day. They should have just left it painted.

Here is a picture of the doors. Thank you Sina for prompting me to try again! The doors look black but are stained dark brown. The floor will be stained Jacobean. The vantage point is with the family room behind me and a window to the covered porch to the right.

Thank you Beth. It is really pretty and I plan to put a small table with a lamp in one corner. The blue cabinet in the dining room is reeeally blue! SW Loyal Blue and even tho I’m learning to like it is a little too bright and intense for me. Thank you for the input!

yes, more of a sedate blue. blue looks so nice w/the rich wood tones. Is that blue cab staying as is? if not, you could surely pick another color. since it leads into the house, what sort of coloring will you have on the walls or surrounding area?

I think I would have to strip the doors, make sure the wood is in excellent shape, wood fill any gaps in the joints, and see what variegated or tone, the wood grain is. It may be that leaving a light to medium wood grain show thru and just sealing them with tung oil layers, if not a tinted sealant/varnish, would make them the prettiest given the dark ceiling, the dark finish to come, floors and the large oval windows. I would be excited to see how pretty their woodgrain may be...Lovely doors. IF the wood grain is nothing you care for, than it would be hard to not paint them a soft blue color such as this...it goes very well with Alabaster White, your trim.... Harbor Haze(BJ) with a Sherwin Williams paint variety for wood: (Satin or Semigloss, match the sheen of your woodwork, tho even a semigloss with satin trim would be fine on doors), (two coats) over SW recommended primer after the doors are stripped, IF you do not like the woodgrain.

Thank you redsilver—very unique suggestion for painting the inside a light blue color. Now two people have suggested blue. Food for thought.

If you still considering ideas about the color I suggest you paint turquoise, I think it will look very beautiful inside of your house. Something like this:

I like TheDoorsDepot suggestion....not necessarily turquoise, but put a colorful rug in the foyer, then pick a color from the rug. The example above is nice in that they picked the turquoise to coordinate with the rug.

Wow gorgeous example, Tuesday! I really like the rug idea to coordinate with surrounding colors. We have a blue built in that can be seen when entering the house so a bright rug using that color family would be great!

You are off to a great beginning in the entry...
