Furniture Design Dilemma Bedroom

Mismatched bedroom dilemna

We currently have a cherry sleigh bed in our master bedroom. The bed was purchased about 5 years ago and was not purchased with the rest of the furniture set.

I am trying to find matching dressers and night stands but i'm finding the task to be nearly impossible! My husband does not want to get rid of the existing sleigh bed and I don't want to settle for an incomplete/mismatched wood set! I am not very design savvy and can't figure out a workaround on my own so that we can both be happy. Any suggestions would be great!

On the narrow side of the bed, I would do a shelf mounted to the wall with a plug in sconce for lighting.

Can you do a painted dresser set? I don't know your style but perhaps a black or white would work better than trying to 'match' wood tones?

If painted is not you're thing, maybe there is a bit of variation in the tone of the bed, that you can pull from, a darker finish without a lot of variation, to add in the dressers to compliment the bed finish?

that was fast! Thanks for the advice. We found a nice set of dressers and nightstands but the color isn't exact. I am cautious to pull the trigger and purchase because its very expensive and I am terrified to commit to something that I cannot visualize. Any places you suggest I should go for design inspiration or see what you you've mentioned above?

Wow, you know I'm not so sure about your question regarding the chair rail. Of course typical height from what I understand is 32-36 inches depending on chair height and such, but for this situation, that's a good question. The concern I would have about putting it too much higher would be a matter of proportion and how pleasing to the eye that would be. If 36 inches is still too low, you may want to consider doing a separate thread and asking what heights other people ended up with when doing something similar. In regards to color for the rail, that is totally up to you, but I wouldn't worry about matching it to the furniture. I would want to match the rail with the trim and doors because it looks more cohesive. Glad you like the polk-a-dot idea, just keep them sparce, it won't take a lot to give it that fun look.

Since you have other tile that you "eventually hope to replace", I would suggest forming a plan now. You'll need to consider the following things: 1. Do you want the same flooring throughout? You say you don't "hate" the look of different flooring, but that is not the same as "I love having different flooring:" 2. What would be the time line for doing the other flooring? Is it one year? Five years? Twenty years? 3. How good are you at delaying gratification? Can you live with a floor you want to change (what you already have) for a year until you are ready to do everything else? Could you live with it for five years? 4. Is the bedroom flooring you have currently usable for the next year or do you have to do something? 5. Are you OK with ripping out the new flooring in the bedroom when you re-do the other floors because you decide then that you want it all the same? When you answer those questions, you'll know what to do.

I agree with what Barnes is showing you. Rather than trying to match the wood finish go with a contrast that coordinates nicely. The look is much more up to date and you'll eliminate the risk of a near-miss.

Can you post some photos of the bed please. You need to keep "scale" (size) of the bedside units in scale with the bed. How much room do you have on each side of the bed? You don't have to do two the same. How high is the top of your mattress. These are all things you need to keep in mind. The height of the side cabinets should be 1-2" within the height of the mattress for easy access. Higher is better than lower. Check out "Bachelor Chests". They range a bit bigger than regular night stands.

You could do something like this. Dark wood frame with white door fronts, then a plain white shelf on the narrow side of the bed. A great gold base lamp on this would tie the gold plug in sconce in and you can do bedding that works with everything in the space.

I would not try to match. Get night stands that coordinate, but do not match the woods exactly. I obviously don't know the style of your home so it's hard to be specific, but get night stands in a different finish ... maybe with metal or mirror details, maybe something black.
