Its better to re-plant the rose and bury the bud union few inches below the soil. the bud union will freeze and you are going to lose the rose. I see many dead roses in my neighborhood planted with the bud union higher like yours.

Would it not be wise to replant them now? The really high one was planted only about 2 weeks ago and the other one month ago.

I agree with replanting now. If they show signs of stress provide shade. I have moved a lot of roses in 20 years. Some take a move with no problem. Others like knockouts are temperamental babies. They need total shade for nearly a week or they will loose their leaves. Good luck I’ll look forward to a photo in a few weeks.

Yes replant now, and keep them watered, I bet they will be fine! Plant the graft at least a couple inches underground, if not more.

Ashley, are you certain that the rose is grafted. It looks as thou it could be own root.

It really does look like an own root rose. That explains how it can make it thru a cold winter with the graft/bud union above ground.

Certainly the last picture of Ashley's looks like it might have a graft with all the canes coming out of it followed by a long shank of rootstock below it. At Lowe's if you bought an Easy Elegance rose it's probably own root, but anything else at the big box stores is likely to be grafted. Regardless, you're right Ashley that burying the rootstock can cause it to sucker, so people in warmer zones don't bury the graft. In cold zones, we're more worried that the rose on top of the graft survives our winters, and if the graft is buried the canes can die to the ground but the graft stays at freezing temperatures below the soil and might survive. If we get suckers we can deal with them separately, as long as the desired rose is still alive. Patty's right of course that with own root roses we don't have to worry about the graft - all we need is root survival for the original rose we bought to come back from the winter.

For the other half of Shelby's question, there are a lot of winter protection methods that various folks try to boost more cane survival of fussy roses. All of them involve some sort of barrier to keep out the wind, retain some moisture in the canes, but not trap too much moisture against the canes and cut off air circulation. As it gets closer to fall you can post again or we can revive some of the old threads about various methods of winter protection.
