Would you keep this divider?

We are remodeling a house we just purchased. As you enter into the home, the first thing you see is this divider (1st pic). The second pic shows what it looks like from inside the room.
Do you think this is a good detail to keep or just looks outdated? We have to rip it out tonight if we want it gone.
Also, with the terra-cotta tile and peak-shaped fireplace, what style would you say this 1967 house is? It seems sort of Spanish.

Comments (9)Yes, Val, it is as littlebit says. Just keep more and replanting more of the biggest fattest rhizomes. One year I was sick when it was time to divide, and I couldn't dig but I went out with a knife and just cut some rhizomes away. Wasteful and not kosher, got them through until the next year. But it's good to get out the weeds and take care of the soil. I am having iris long enough to figure out that sometimes I just don't get to have a "show" every year. Some iris don't come back as easily as others. It takes Edith Wolford two years to get up to speed after dividing. But the orange TB's that I traded to you come back easily for me. I wish I knew their name as I would like to recommend them to others. But you have a lot of historics, and they are still around for a reason. They come back easily and are prolific, so you will be happy enough with the show next spring. I always am....See More1990's Fireplace room divider eyesore. What would you do?
Comments (6)You ask what is structural- There appears to be a beam over the door, which probably continues across the room, and obviously a flue, other than that you could probably remove everything, but that is probably not cost effective. I would start by closing up the uppermost niches and the "transom" over the door. Change the ceramic tile surround and hearth. Add cabinets on either side of the fireplace. If you like the openings between the rooms, then leave them- or close up the backs and add shelves. Comments (11)Thanks everyone! I’m leaning towards keeping the pony wall and getting a freestanding tub that is around 30 inches wide. After re-looking at things, I think that 8 inches from the window/exterior wall would be fine and I’ll just keep the pony wall pretty close to how it is now. I wish I had a wider shower so that the pony wall didn’t extend beyond the shower threshold, but unfortunately that doorway cannot be moved!...See MoreCloset Dividing Walls: Keep Or Go?

5 years ago@Mon - We will be painting the walls the color you suggested as well as we are thinking of going with medium brown floors, close to what they were originally. Here’s an inspiration photo I pinned that sounds very similar to your design suggestions. :)
