Pony wall - would you demo or keep?

Please help with your opinions about my primary bathroom design! I was favoring a freestanding tub rather than keeping the drop in tub. Do you think an all-glass shower would look better or should we keep the pony wall? I am concerned about the fact that the
pony wall hits out in an awkward fashion, but I like having the pony wall to hide our shampoo bottles, etc. I am not a fan of niches.

The shower width is 32” and pony wall width is 43.5”.

I'd remove it, because I think it will make the bathroom seem more open, however, if you are replacing with glass, more to clean! And you will see the shampoo bottles, but you'd also see them if you had a niche.

Thanks for your feedback! If I do remove the pony wall, do you think I might as well have the shower niche? Or under a corner bench perhaps? Not sure how else people store their toiletries in a completely open shower!

In our layout, the vanity is to the left like yours, but our shower is in-between the vanity and the toilet. Currently the shower is encased in a tall, tiled tower, which creates privacy for the toilet. We want a more light filled shower, so we are knocking down the tower and creating a pony wall on either side of the shower with glass above, so the toilet will still have a modesty panel. We thought about flipping the toilet and shower, but DH does not want to have the toilet next to him when he is brushing his teeth! I don't know if flipping the shower location with the toilet might be an option for you with possible plumbing issues at this late date or not.

UPDATE: We are moving along, but ever so slowly it seems! I think that is the way it might feel for some time : ) Working on other areas of the house, inside and out, has taken us temporarily away from the kitchen, but we are getting back to it now! I've been in the process of setting up our temporary-temporary kitchen in the breakfast nook, which is in the current kitchen. DH informed me it'd have to be moved soon so he and I could begin demo of the kitchen... I am clearly too tired to think straight - he's right! He suggested we move it to the dining room-to-be TV room for now... but first we had to remove his widescreen TV, which he seemed unable to live without (sports fan that he is). This was a sacrifice for DH. Bless his heart! Yesterday we began to set up the temp-temp kitchen (2 temps) because eventually it will be taken down to remove and rebuild a wall between the future tv room and kitchen... My prep space, and only a few of many storage units... The water source is all the way across the house... I'll be keeping a jug nearby! The only problem? We removed the only light in that room... this is the scene from early this morning... making DH's lunch using an emergency light! Felt a bit like camping days from the past! We'll be adding a cheap light pronto! coffee stations are all the rage now... and we have one! Living the life! I have double ovens! (ancient toaster oven sitting on top of old microwave). I'll sure miss that "feature" as our new kitchen will only have a slide in range. ; ) The microwave came from DH's bachelor pad, and to my dismay still had 'gunk' in it, after it'd been sitting for 2 years! I used a flame torch to sterilize it. We put an old rug on the plywood subfloor for now... it adds a certain je ne sais quoi to our formal dining area, don't you think? Things I've learned thus far: 1) When vacuuming plywood sub-flooring, always vacuum with the grain. That way you'll get up half the dirt as opposed to none. 2) Those plastic drawer storage containers won't open if you put anything heavier than 15 paper napkins and a single plastic fork. 3) Keep a plastic drop cloth over everything when not in use... demo dust can find it's way into anything! 4) Maintain a sense of humor, maintain some semblance of order amidst the chaos, and always, always, have a hot pad ready for hot casserole dishes! Oaktonmom that is a good point, but unfortunately as mentioned in my original post, the other wall opposite the fireplace is not wide enough to put a tv on, that is part of the dilemma with this space.

I think it would be unbalanced unless you took both down to a pony wall. I think my first option would be to get rid of the mirror so there is balance there.

I would consider having a free standing tub. Still include a pony wall for the shower with glass on top. Niche can go in pony wall so hidden somewhat.

Thanks for your opinion! I like the pony wall for hiding the toiletry mess too. Do you think the pony wall looks strange, jutting out significantly beyond the shower width? Should I shorten the pony wall to exactly the same width as the shower? It seems like most freestanding tubs have a width around 30 inches, if that matters.

You should measure out the space and do a layout to see if everything would fit. I imagined pony wall being in line with threshold. Example photo.

Shorten the width of pony wall (has to be torn out and replaced anyway) and rebuild wall to size of shower. Put the niche in it. Full length niche with solid surface top (same as vanity top and shower threshold), and designed to be high enough for all grooming products.

Thank you all! I had a passing thought about shortening the pony wall to match the width of the shower. But then second guessed myself and thought it might look weird having the free standing tub be wider than the pony wall? All the Houzz photos I’ve seen show the pony wall being slightly wider than the tub, as jackowskib’s photo shows….

I was assuming that I needed a certain clearance (?4 ?5 inches) between the exterior wall and the freestanding tub.

I think you need some room between the tub and the shower/pony wall to get in between to clean the floor! We are going to have 6 inches on each side of the freestanding tub and I hope it is enough : ). They do make free standing tubs in all lengths, so be sure to measure and include room on each side.

I actually like the pony wall. The bathroom seems open enough to me.

For a freestanding tub - keep in mind you need SPACE between the tub and the wall for cleaning purposes. Frankly, I doubt 4 or 5 inches is sufficient, even if that would be fine for code. Unless you are extremely skinny.

Thanks everyone! I’m leaning towards keeping the pony wall and getting a freestanding tub that is around 30 inches wide. After re-looking at things, I think that 8 inches from the window/exterior wall would be fine and I’ll just keep the pony wall pretty close to how it is now. I wish I had a wider shower so that the pony wall didn’t extend beyond the shower threshold, but unfortunately that doorway cannot be moved!
