Any furnace mechanics out there? I have a question for ya!

I have an older furnace (York central air natural gas) from probably mid to late 90's. It seems to be working great EXCEPT that the sensor probe gets dirty all the time and we have to clean it off. We were told that we should buy a new probe so last year we bought a new one but it still has to be cleaned off pretty often. So just this morning we had to turn on the heat after having run the A/C for a couple weeks and it didn't come on, went and cleaned the probe, seemed a little hazy, and now it's back to working once again. Why would the probe keep getting so hazy in such a short time...maybe only two months ago we had cleaned it. Could there be something more to it? I was told that natural gas will cause this because of the odorizers that are put in the gas for safety so you can smell it if it leaks.
