Glass collectors..I have a challenge for ya

Was searching for garden gnomes and stumbled upon this. I am going to make one..next time I go to the Thrift Shop and find a big container gonna do something like this...

Now isn't THAT adorable! My artist daughter works in polymer clay and I'm suuuuuure I could nag her into making me a few gnome homes to put in a terrarium like that. What an adorable idea! Thanks for sharing!!!

Ok this will kill the health food freaks, but oh well :oP You're warned... Hangover MacDonalds chocolate milkshake will cure it faster than anything. I used to work for a DR and he was a nut about health, but on occasion, I'd see him drive up in the AM with a MicD's drink glass. He didn't drink soda...I was thinking he was getting huge orange juices. One day while cleaning the office a bit (his desk was frightening LOL) I saw that the soda cup was actually milkshake. His medical explaination... Milk will aggrevate the acids in your system from the booze, likely curdling and coming back up. MacDonalds fake shakes actually aren't made from milk so much as chemicals, so they'll go down and sort of "Sit" on the acids and absorb them as well. The chocolate gives you the sugar boost you need until your body can bring itself back to normal (it's just temporary) and the cafeen will help with a perk up. I use it myself ever since :) I don't drink til I pass out daily LOL but on occasion, when entertaining wine collectors especially, I'll end with one taste too many (port always gets me LOL I can't say no). I also used to drink for a living (ok I was community relations, but in AK that means you spend quite a bit of time at a private club here that specializes in wine) and every once in a while, it would be hard to get up in the morning heh heh My staff knew if they saw me with a milkshake before 10, they should leave me be for an hour LOL

Re Bluebars' comment: LOL--I would scatter them on the back of a quilt to cover all the little snips I had to make to make it lie flat after quilting. Had to do this with two quilts, and it would've been easier if I's had some nice little blocks to use for the applique. This thread has opened my eyes to that possibility. GrammyP: I like sashing for the same reason, but it failed me when I was making a SlideShow quilt, with all those little squares inserted in the sashing. Had to do some ripping and finagling there! The worst quilt I have ever made, so far as ripping out is concerned, was an all-batik 9-4. The important I-Spy squares were all dark prints, and I planned a variety of peach-colored or yellowish batik prints for the background, but as I began to put it together, I realized I hated it. Ordered more peachy batik so the background could be all the same fabric. Put together the first several rows (for a queen-sized quilt), realized I didn't like the effect of the quilt as a whole and decided to rip off a number of blocks on one side to make it lap-sized. Then realized that I had destroyed the symmetry of the pictures in the dark squares and had to rip and rearrange. In the process of doing which, I sewed in a block with cat pictures upside-down (Several other blocks had things like leaves and fruit that had no up or down; wouldn't you know I would pick one with directional squares to mess up on?) More ripping. To this day, I still don't get the usual good feeling when I look at that quilt. It is in service covering an unwanted piece of furniture in the living-room that DH can't bear to part with, so I see it often. As soon as I get around to finding or making something more attractive, this quilt gets to reside in the trunk of my car!

Y'all's comments just absolutely take my breath away. Quad, triple, double, huh, BAMA. Wooohooo and a Texas yeehaw! I see so many areas that I'm mentally re-working, but alas, he's DONE!!! Only five days work, but it seems it took forever. SEA: The back wall in my workshop started last year, and is still a WIP. Like I've said before, my attention span is very short. One side is done, but I grout w/little bits of left-over grout cuz I got sick of the whole thing. It has all different colors grout. The other side just has a few pieces adhered, and may never be completed - **sigh**. Thank y'all - each comment humbles me greatly.

shanghai.. thanks so much! so nice of you to say. I think this new kitchen has huge potential - it is just so tricky with the chimney and also stairwells separating the kitchen from the other parts of the house. I guess we'll see how it progresses. I have to commit to a floorplan first. bmore, -- can the w/d hide in the bp somewhere? odd, I know unfortunately not. when entering the bp from the kitchen, immediately on your left is a cabinet - it has a false front which is hiding headspace for the basement stairs - and there isn't much headspace to start with so I really cannot push this back at all. on the right as you enter the bp is a bank of cabinets and a sink. the sink is huge, a big 36" kohler cast iron sink for a room that is only 72" wide! way too big. we will keep a sink in there - it has been very handy. the kids brush their teeth there before leaving for school and we have filtered water over there so they can help themselves to water anytime. I will try to post some pictures of the bp so that you can get a sense. the cabinetry hiding the basement stairwell headspace is so funky you can't even believe it. having the W/D out in the open in that utility space doesn't bother me. Obviously in Plans 2 and 3 it is pretty well hidden which is nice, but even in Plan 1 as long as I can't see it from the kitchen I am okay. I do laundry every day so I don't want it behind doors as I want the easy access to it. -- Can the basement door have a surface mounted sliding door? probably.... this would be worth investigating as that doorswing is CRAZY making. -- Get the tall things not to be between you and the door? exchange the table and the ref stuff? will try this next along with Brian's idea on #2 - ran out of time earlier today. hinge the exit doors on the other side (on the bp side)? if I do this I will have to move the casing down toward the sink wall such that door when open is not obstructing the opening to the bp (as I have shown in plan #2 above). The wall space to the right of the opening to the bp is only 22" and without the option of moving the doorway over (because of the above mentioned basement headspace issue) I am limited here. can you move the bp door at all? I can widen it a little which might alleviate the log jam we are feeling in this space as it is a major traffic pattern. On the left side I can pull it back about 5". On the right side maybe about 5" as well. I am trying to go for a little bit more of a contemporary look so I might try to tone down all the heavy duty casings in this space. From that standpoint I love the idea of the basement door on a sliding track. I have seen them by Fleurco for shower bathroom doors....maybe could be used in this application as well. florantha, do you mean over where the W/D currently resides? if so, no this is not even remotely a possibility as there is very little set back. This house is an 1850's sea captain's house in the village section of my town. Very cute and quaint but not a lot of space for bumping out (because of set backs, etc.). if you have any other ideas or that is not what you meant please let me know. thanks.

I love terrariums! And that one is doubly cute with the little gnomes. Doesn't look like there is much to it with one type of plant and the gnomes and gnome accessories.

Love the terrarium!
I have a 3 ft tall glass container, the largest
center part is about 18 in. BUT, the top is only
about 2 1/2 inches----Very hard to make a terrarium!
Have had it since the early 80's--one of those things
that I just HAD to have when I saw it! LOL It has Lily seed pods in it-they are about 4-5 feet tall.

calamity..your terrarium is PERRRFECT for the job!

Nona...back in the 70's when terrariums were all the rage I remember reading in a book on how to get they items in there with glass containers with tight necks and it's basically using those grabber things that you use when you drop something down the sink. Does that help? Or long hemastats or tweezers. I found a foot long tweezer in the hardware section at the dollar store...had to get it, you never know when you need it. ;-)

Problem is trying to find these mosses that will survive in a terr. outdoors...guess you need a shady spot.

Hi socalliegal, that's a cute idea. It reminds me of the 1970s too. Looks like you live in so cal. I'm about 30 minutes east of LA. You may or may not live near me, but if you email me from 'my page' and I'll tell you where there are a lot of great junk spots around here. Linda

The did use the long tweezers to "plant" the bottle terrariums. I always wondered where one purchased such tweezers! Calamity_j, you'll have to post "after" pictures of your terrarium. What a great piece you have!

I used to make and sell terrariums in Almaden wine bottles (in the 70s,lol). But the little gnome additions are a riot!

calamity...I think you need to use that glass treasure in yoru pond creations...can you hang it somewhere with "parrots feather" & put the toots in pea gravel or shells or something in the glass pot (instead of dirt) & let the parrots feather cascade down into the pond. Ummm, just brainstorming! Great find!

speaking of gnomes..I have gone gnome crazy...even though my yard and my mom's yard has plenty. I bought more last night at Big Lots. I bought one that just stands with a shovel...and then another one that came in a set with a fugly mushroom...yes FUGLY. I had seen this set before at a different Big Lots and just passed it up. But last night I thought heck for the same price of a single gnome I have a gnome and a mushroom. So when I got it home last night cracked open my acrylics and repainted that fugly mushroom with a white stem and the red top and the white spots (I make a mixture of gesso, acrylic paint and sealer..kinda my magic mix for when I paint stuff for the yard)..ya know like the fairy tale books. It looks so much better, got to do some more shading and antiquing and then varnish.

GREAT IDEA!!! More containers for my succulents; I just happen to have an old fish tank and a large glass container especially to jazz up my "Succulent Garden

sprout - thanks for posting that. I had found recently a glass container with thick ribbed glass. I took the plastic seal off the top stopper so more air could circulate. I found a gold and silver large ceramic candle stick that made a perfect fit pedestal for under it. So far I just put in glass flower marbles in green yellow tones and that looked cool just as is. I found a small bronzed ceramic angel at the T/S last night that plays a squeezebox and it just dawned on me that he would fit in there well. The article answered my questions about direct sunlight. Right now I have it in direct light and that would fry any plants. For right now I think I will just put the angel in there by himself until I find a better spot for possible plants.
