I need help with furniture layout in large room

I have a large 36x22 open living room adjoined to my kitchen and dining area that I just can't figure out how to layout and make look nice. I have3-4 old furniture items I'd like to replace just scattered about now. Any ideas from the creative peeps out there?

i don't see anything truly wrong with the furnishings. If your replace i would get a second full sofa, not a love seat. i would also decide which area is the one you spend most time with friends. so if it is the tv I would make the sofas into an L facing the windows and the tv, w the other chair being in catecorner to sofa and windows.

i would then get to comfy chairs for you and hubby to enjoy fire, read etc. or you could put a small table there, for game playing and the 2 of you having candlelit dinners in front of.

If you divide this space into two areas I would first buy two carpets (Oriental would be best) in warm colors that will look good with the floor and that also look good next to each other. I would advise a third rug for the dining area so that you're not looking at acres of bare flooring, and this whole area will instantly look warmer and cozier. I'm afraid the desk doesn't really belong in this room, and certainly not in that space, crowded next to the fireplace. You need a console under the TV to ground that area. I would remove the large table by the window which looks very out of place. Consider drapes for the large window or some other treatment so it doesn't look like a huge gaping hole at night. With a pretty rug a metal and glass coffee table would like very nice. The couch looks very lonely without some sort of side table and a lamp, and also some pillows.

les917 - the answers are no and no. No TV, and we cannot (and I don't think want to) move the fireplace. nanny2a - thanks, you are totally right. The coffee table is shown slightly in the wrong spot. I envision it being a coffee table sitting in front of the large sectional (hence wanting it to be the length it is). It will not be sitting in the center of the room like shown. Does anyone see any concern about clearance between the chaise and the fireplace (where one would walk to go from center of living room into the dining room). What kind of clearance do you think is needed/what is the max length and width I could get away with for a chaise/daybed in that area? And does anyone see an issue with the fireplace sitting in the middle of the room, and nothing really being oriented towards it? That is one of my primary concerns with the layout I've put together...

JuniperSt - we moved into a home with a very large great room also - overall size: 29Ã¢ÂÂ² long x 27Ã¢ÂÂ² wide. I actually ended up submitting the space and dimensions to Ballard Designs design team and they came up with a space plan for me with recommended pieces. I did select a couple of their pieces, but mostly wanted the space plan. I thought they did a great job. Instead of the dining table and console I did bookcases along that wall (where the console was suggested) and did two chairs with a table between in front of the bay window. You could submit your space to them and get some ideas that way - it's free! I did find the key to making the space work and be intimate was to define different spaces. This is also a major walk-through, so needed to be mindful of that. Oh, btw, our tv is huge - it needed to be in order to see it from the sectional. My husband and I have done what you suggested by drawing up some plans We have started with the smaller version. Thank you for your offer of help. I think we are both realizing that we can’t get everything we dream of in the space as originally planned. He does not want to put a tv in front of a window because of the wiring etc. can be seen on the outside. He has mentioned also that with this size of room, it may be difficult to sit back far enough to view a TV. In terms of dining, since we seldom have a crowd for a sit down meal, I suggested that we not put a permenant dining table in. We can rent a table as the need arises and rearrange the room. If I can move my china cabinet to this space, it will open room in my 12x12 dining room so I can get a larger table in that room. If we use swivel chairs in the addition, we can easily turn the chairs for viewing or conversations. The posted picture is the latest version of our possible furniture layout. Floor lamps would go on each side of the sofa. The door to the left of the sofa will be a door size window so no traffic will go in and out here. The coffee table will be a padded bench with a tray. This plan may still be too tight We would love to see your thoughts with the original size space or the larger version.
