i would like to share my gardening pratice with you
Comments (29)I am sorry that this thread is going toward a direction that is not intended. It is almost funny to see how people would defend themselves over any gardening issues, which is a good thing actually. It is nice to see serious people giving their best to this thread. Thank you. You guys really know your stuff. First of all, I'd have to agree with pnbrown that, while being a good gardening practice, mulching is not for everyone in every situation. What I just said might sound redundant but if you try it for a few months in the place where I live like I did, you will come to the same conclusion that mulching is good for soil but does not solve my sandy crust problem at all. Soil crusting is a complicated problem(at least to me) . The crust on clay soil has very different behavior from a sandy soil crust. Clay particle is highly water absorbing and the crust on it just gives it more surface area for it to absorb and retain more water. If you mulch in this situation, the mulch will effectively reduce water evaporation from the clay crust, thus saving you a lot of watering in certain time of year. This is exactly what mulching is for imo: to preserve and reduce water evaporation in soil. Sandy soil is a water repelling in nature. Anything you put to cover it will add to the difficulty of it absorbing water. It is not a problem with water retention now. It is the problem of getting water INTO the soil. Mulch does nothing to help with this, and somehow makes it harder to water the plant. Even if you manage to soak a few inches on top the rest of the bed is still dry as hell. This leaves me no choice but to water my beds longer than usual during dry seasons which waste water. The breathe holes really stop surface runoff. The water disappear so quickly and not running down beside the beds like before. It is tedious job poking them every once in a while but at least they work. And if you apply fertilizer before watering the breathe holes it is even better as the fertilizer can go deeper and faster....See MoreWould just like to share my garden success thus far...
Comments (11)Thank you so much everyone! Chris: My tomatoes usually stay in them but before this year my tomatoes truly were horrible. Last yearr out of 16 plants i got a grand total of 5 tomatoes. Yeah, that bad. I am not expecting them to stay in the cages though. As far as bug control, nothing at this point other than hand killing :) The flea beetles aren't out of control at this point so I'm not going to fret about them yet. I only know they are there based on minor damage and the fact that I actually seen them. I need to go out one night and look for my culprit. I think some hot pepper mix or BT is in my future. Tuamor1628 and simmran1: Thank you for the nice comments and suggestions! KCKook: Thank you! Yeah, my 'maters are a little close, but at the same time I was going into this season with very low expectations based on last year. My plants (indet) topped out at MAYBE 4-5 ft and were very pathetic and I gave them lots of room. This year I planted closer with the new beds (the beds are brand new for this yr) figuring I will prune if I need to. As far as the cages, based on what I've read, everyone agrees with you :) I pretty much figured I would eventually have to stake them as well with the wooden stakes you see for the tomatoes without cages. I figured it would help them stay contained at least somewhat lol. The tomatoes in the first half of the first bed (pic 2) ended up WAY closer than I intended. But most of the others are about 2 ft apart lengthwise and 18-24" diagonally. Like I said, I will learn to prune if I need to and I think I probably will as they are growing like weeds now. It is incredible compared to last yr. This is more of an experimental year for me than anything. Learning what works, what doesn't and IF raised beds really do make a difference where I live and so far the answer is yes :) Oh, and starting your own seeds can make an impact to. Out of all the plants above only 1 tomato, 4 peppers and 2 eggplants are store bought. Everything else is from seed, which was a whole new world for me as well!...See MoreWould you like to share your pendants and lighting?
Comments (3)Hi, Have you got pics of your bar stools? (Still haven't picked mine, we're making do with 2 freebies- so poor DS has to stand until we get table and chairs set up :>) I am 'matching' these elements, ORB chandelier, pendants, bullet lights, and cabinet hardware. Don't have pics yet as handles aren't on (hopefully soon). My sink and faucet and soap dispenser are SS as are all the appliances on the counter level. I am assuming I will get ORB bar stools, if not all wood. I did some 'decorating' yesterday, and have some brushed gold oil/tea light burners, and I'm surprised that they look good, but then again, now that I think about it, I have them next to a ORB urn rimmed in brass, so I guess that tied them together. I'm not a decorator, but I think matching is safe, mixing can add variety and texture and layering, it just requires a little more finesse. So, to answer your question, I don't think matching your bar stools to your cabinet hardware is 'too matchy'....See MoreLooking for a few Gothic gardeners who would like to share their story
Comments (0)Greetings! I'm a Central Florida freelance writer looking to do a piece on gothic gardening to run in the fall. While I am currently researching target markets, the subject has intrigued me enough that if I don't land one in time, I will do a post on it for my personal blog in October. I'm also looking to locate a few folks who have created such a garden and wouldn't mind describing their efforts and outcomes, as well as what made them want to create such a garden in the first place, and any reactions they might have received on their project from friends and neighbors. If anyone here is or knows someone like that, they can reach me at lwinborne704@gmail.com. My professional website is http://bluetypewriter.com. Thank you!...See MoreMarigold33 NY-Z7
