Kitchen renovation is almost done...still can’t figure out backsplash
My kitchen/family room renovstion is almost done. Stainless appliances are being delivered next week. I was hoping to have backsplash installed first, but am just so stumped with what to do! Cabinets are custom shaker painted BM White Dove, counters are Hanstone Italian Waves. Paint On one small section of wall in kitchen and into attached family room is BM Barren Plain.

backsplash is about 30 sq. Feet total so a small area. Counters have some movement So I don’t want anything to busy to compete.
Here is what I have for backsplash options...sorry for shadow. From L To R: Studio3 3x12 handcrafted in Silver, Zen Pearl 3x6, Equevo Pumice 3x6 (also comes in 2 x8), Daltile Ice Gray (sample is square, but I can order in 3x6 or 2x8 - will take 6 weeks) Daltile Desert Gray (3x6 or 2x8 are in stock)
With under-cabinet lighting on
I like the color And shape of the Studio3 but really think the size is too big for the small space -especially under the window area. I worry about a lot of cuts that will take away from the feel of the tile)
otherwise i am stumped. Do I go lighter (like the Equevo) or darker (the Zen). Originally I was going with the Zen but once the counters were installed I worried it was too dark. Everyone I have asked of my friends picks a different tile. I like the ice gray daltile but if I tell my contractor I won’t have tile for 6 weeks he will flip.
are there any other options you would recommend (that won’t take forecer to order?). Thoughts on 3x6 vs 2 x8
this decision is honestly driving me nuts. I get more confused every day.

Comments (28)I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! Comments (21)Hi. We installed out kitchen in 2012. We still haven't chosen or decided on a backslpash - it's the painted wall. I have a creamy Egyptian marble, - don't remember the name. I like unstructured European vintage-y kitchens. Many of them don't have backsplashes either. My stainless range has a stainless backsplash directly behind it. I had picked out some mini-clear glass subway tile for the backsplash that coincidentally matches my Prescott Green paint color perfectly but what if I decide to change wall color one day? Just this week I started thinking maybe I made my backsplash tile decision three years ago which was to have none. Our marble installers tried very hard to discourage us from marble in the kitchen but I have not regretted it. All those kitchens in southern Europe can't be wrong. Comments (9)doraville - you're right its never done! I decided to go with white cellular shades and curtains over the sliders. eastbaymom - Wow I never thought luxurious, but thank you! I'm really happy with the way every thing turned out. The backsplash is a difficult choice, its dificulty trying to decide without taking away from the beauty of rest of the kitchen. Comments (29)Hi Helene, my kitchen is only 11' 4" wide, so I couldn't fit in an island. I kept the peninsula for the added workspace and storage, but removed the larger overhang and stools that we used to have. That gave me more room on the table side for a larger table. I also added the wood hutch piece for more counter space and storage to make up for not having an island. I struggled with where to put the microwave as I didn't want to put it over the range. I decided to put it in an upper microwave cabinet to the right side of the refrigerator. That's the one cabinet I had to have replaced which is why I don't have a picture of it. The microwave that I bought is the GE Spacemaker that you can use countertop or hang under a 12" cabinet. I'm putting it on a shelf. Once the cabinet is installed I'll post pictures of it. 5 years agoThis is what I ended up with...I went with daltile Desert Gray traditional subway with a slightly lighter grout for contrast (which doesn’t show in the picture). I know some said gray and white was old news, but I am very happy with the end result.

Ignore the clutter as we are in the middle of moving in but mine are still up. They are looking a little brighter with stuff on the counter . I still want to change them but i need to prioritize my budget. I plan on trying grout renew to see if lightening the grout helps.

Lori-Choosing a backsplash tile can be a tricky task! There are so many options to choose from. Above is a photo of a completed kitchen project with Bailey's Cabinets. Featured in the photo are Haas cabinets in maple with a bistro finish. This customer chose a combination of gray and neutral colors to complete their backsplash, creating more depth and texture. It may be a possibility with the tile you selected to create a similar effect. Hopefully, this photo has proven helpful! Best of luck
